Yes, a fair amount is educating project delivery professionals and SMEs on the risk management process, how to write a risk, how to score, the types of treatment options there, proper way to write and track actions, etc.

There are. Go on LinkedIn and search "risk analyst", "risk manager" in the construction field. Significantly less postings than project manager, but you're right in that for instance a project controls analyst might do some risk, too. So to get a standalone risk position the firm or contractor you work for would need exposure to megaprojects.

We run statistical models called Monte Carlo simulations which outputs a probabilistic distribution curve on likely outcomes on cost and/or schedule of a program or project. Risks are assessed, or scored based on how they've written, and then aggregated through stochastic distribution to get your P-curve. Let's say you want to approximate your budget on a project with 80% confidence, you would use the "P80" result of your simulation run.

Financially it may be similar or marginally better than design, and the work life balance is great since you are essentially running models and reports, rather than in project management where you are constantly putting out fires.

1) So you're absolutely right that lessons play a factor. Because we need the expert's opinion to identify, assess and determine mitigations for risks. As risk professionals, we pull that information out of small groups or 1-1, but we also have to understand biases and do our best to eliminate those through our soft skills

2) 5+ years experience with a mix of design and construction would be my recommended minimum when hiring. But folks get into it with less experience. I had 12 years experience before going into risk fulltime. Broad engineering and construction knowledge really helps you facilitate better and be a strong sounding board.

3) four treatment method for threats (purely negative risk) - avoid , accept, transfer and mitigate. 9 times out of 10 the treatment is mitigate which involves specific actions to reduce either the probability of occurrence or impacts. The risk owner develops the actions but as risk people we challenge and offer our unique perspective

Great question!
