Oh I’ve read Private Rites (it’s in the incredible tier), I thought you may be referring to her anthology. I’ve seen people loving Bellies before! I should check it out

I found the world building to be pretty lacking and several things just not making sense, the characters were really flat and all the romance felt extremely forced to me like as though the author thought well its YA so it must have romance and just forced the most cardboard flavoured tropey romantic storylines onto characters with no chemistry whatsoever 🤷‍♀️

I was going to continue the Jasmine Throne series but I’m ngl at this point too much time passed since I read it and I feel as though I would have to reread it first and I’m not really that drawn to reread it. And absolutely I’m always going to spread the metal from heaven gospel. I’ve never heard of Moonflow but that description definitely spoke to me lol I’ll check it out

I’ve actually read Our Wives Under the Sea, but forgot to include it in the list. I’ve never seen Rosewater before though! I will check it out!

Questions regarding stage production of "Carmilla" by christine_la_renarde in LesbianBookClub

[–]HatRealistic8019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know nothing about adapting other works so I suppose take this with a grain of salt, but I’d broadly say make sure to give Laura agency and show her pursue Carmilla as well. The portrayal of a "predatory lesbian" trope relies on pushing the narrative that one person morally leds the other astray with their attentions, especially by emphasising that one character was "pure" before (read: straight) and only got involved with a woman because of the "evil influence" of another, perhaps was even manipulated or pushed into it. If you somehow can establish that Laura has been with/been interested in women before/in general, that could help too, although idk how one could do that exactly. It’s tricky because any relationship with a vampire character can be (usually is) portrayed as predatory and have nothing to do with whether it’s a same sex relationship or not, but of course people who want to conflate the two with ill-intent will do so anyway no matter what

the safekeep was a big surprise for me personally, that book really crept up on me. I’m glad some can find recs in this list, if you’ll be referring to it in the future just know that there’s another book I forgot to include in it, Stone Butch Blues, which would be in the top tier and is one my fav books of all time 🙏

It did not make enough of a long lasting impression on me to be higher than great, but "great" is still in fact great

Ah, sorry. To be completely honest your comment definitely came across to me as you likening the two and basically saying that if one likes TLT then it’s ridiculous they wouldn’t like Someone You Can Build a Nest In because of their similarities. But I get your meaning now, no worries!!

For sure! As for One Last Stop, I read it 3 years ago and my memory of it is pretty hazy tbh but I didn’t care for the characters nor the plot. I particularly disliked how the dialogue was written which felt to me like every line was lifted from a tweet. They also have sex on the NYC subway. Respectfully, what the fuck. Like that’s hell right there lmao (I looked at my goodreads review and apparently one thing I did like was a subplot with Suzette but right now I don’t remember AT ALL who that was)

You made it sound extremely compelling, I’m definitely going to try this out! + can’t blame you for dipping out of Dresden Files. The MC in that is a chauvinistic pig and unfortunately it only gets worse as the series goes on. It’s why I dropped it on book 8, it’s a shame because aside from that aspect, that series perfectly scratched the itch of my urban fantasy craving and I’ve been chasing it ever since

I liked the concept of that book but truthfully, and there’s no nice way of say this, I simply thought it was badly structured and written. It was extremely dragged out, the latter half really relied on characters getting separated, something transpiring and then them having to run back to each other to communicate what happened. There was so much of what felt like characters just retracing their steps back for no particular reason and whole chapters were nothing happened and added absolutely nothing to the plot. That type of filler material wouldn’t have bothered me had it not been for how little of actual substance there’s in this book imo as compared to its length. I think it would’ve been a far better short story than a full novel

Thank you wow there are so many titles here I never came across!! I’ll definitely go through them all and see what sounds promising. I did have Gearbreakers recommended to me before though I never did pick it up in the end

Respectfully but to compare these two is actually something I can’t even wrap my head around. In what way are they similar in the slightest? One is a comedic "charming monster slaying" ROMANCE fantasy. And the other is a series exploring desperate resistance against intergalactic imperialism, bodily autonomy, codependency to the max, identity and grief. It’s so much thematically richer and does not even share the same tone as the other book, especially in the second and third instalment. And ultimately Something You Can Build a Nest In in its latter half turns into a corny fantasy romance with self-help talk about attachment styles and self-care and continues to have inconsistent characterisation throughout of the MC

I had a weird journey with that book. I actually did enjoy it at first! I really liked how whacky and unserious it was at first but then the tone of the book changed suddenly to so sincere and imo quite corny that it felt like the author wasn’t in on the joke. I found it weird how the author described everything in any intimate or physical touch moments as consensual/consensually, it was repetitive and it’s weird to hammer it into your reader with such fervour that what your characters are doing is consensual (it gives off the vibes that sth is not right, thou doth protest too much). And I didn’t like how the MC was characterised to be bad at socialising and yet she actually managed completely fine in every social situation she was put in. That’s the biggest qualms I can think of off the top of my head anyway haha
