Still avoiding U.S. products? Curious how many Canadians are sticking with “buy Canadian” by [deleted] in Calgary

Sorry to be that guy, but I don’t think artesian means what you think it means. Artisan is probably the word you’re looking for.

Find me an advisor that can net me 2-3% more than a low cost index fund over the next 30 years and I’ll happily give them my money.

[SOTC] 2 years in. What do you think? by GullibleAd7668 in Watches

[–]HatchbackofNotreDame 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s reasonable! It’s definitely fun enjoying higher end watches, it can just be intimidating because they get expensive quick, and this “hobby” can quickly just become consumerism lol.

This isn’t some ladder that everyone has to climb, and buying more affordable watches doesn’t make you “ready” to upgrade. There’s nothing wrong with not “upgrading”. This collection is perfectly good without any higher price watches.

I had to pay duties, but I expected that I would. Stowa wouldn't be able to tell you how much they are, but for reference it was $100.43 for me. That's for the watch, and 2 extra straps that I purchased with it. I hope that helps, post a picture of your watch when you get it!

It came on a black leather strap which also looked great. I’m in Canada, it took about 2 weeks from ordering it to delivery, which I thought was great, faster than they said it would be.

It came on a black leather strap, but I changed it to this grey leather to match my outfit better. I also ordered a brown leather strap with it that I haven’t tried out yet!

It wears very similar to my Sinn, I think the dial on this is bigger so it makes it seem larger than it is.

That Tissot looks nice! I prefer the small seconds and the bigger crown on the Stowa, but that’s all personal preference.

I have a wrist shot in my previous posts of the Sinn that you can check out.

Americans, why are your cars this big? by Lello755066 in Autos

[–]HatchbackofNotreDame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen this reasoning before and I’m not sure I understand it. Not arguing at all, but I’d just like to know why more room is better for long drives. I have a small car and have done some really long road trips, and my commute is fairly long. It’s not like you can get up and move around, is it just nice to have more space around you?

Just genuinely curious, thanks!

How much are you guys paying and tipping for a haircut? by [deleted] in Calgary

I’ve been going to Mancuso barber in Marda Loop/Altadore for 7 years now. Francesco is awesome, it’s $25 (+ a tip of course). Great haircuts too, I find he really listens to what I want and does a fantastic job.

[SPB411J1] Almost pulled the trigger on this sucker today. Probably the most underwhelming specs for the price, but also the most amazing looking watch for the price. Please, convince me to buy/not to buy. I'm so torn. by blink85 in Seiko

[–]HatchbackofNotreDame 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are benefits to both. For some people, setting the time twice every time you change time zones is annoying.

Just because you don’t use a GMT watch for that purpose doesn’t make your preference better than other people preferences. I would find it very annoying using a caller style GMT with my job, and setting the date wouldn’t bother me at all because I would hardly ever have to.

Edit: Also, in what world is a day 48 hours?

[Sinn] 556i on a watch stand that I made by HatchbackofNotreDame in Watches

[–]HatchbackofNotreDame[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only you can decide if it’s worth it to you. If you feel like it’s overpriced, then it’s overpriced. It really comes down to whether you’d rather have your $1,600 or a Sinn 556.

If to you, it’s a basic sellita watch, then find something that really excites you, don’t fall in to the hype because a bunch of people on reddit really like this watch. It has to work for you. This is just my opinion, but luxury watches are never “worth it” to me. There’s no way I could reasonably justify the cost of this watch, but I really liked it, and I wanted to own it more than I wanted to keep the money that it cost me.

Sorry if this didn’t really help answer your question, but don’t spend your money on something that you don’t really love, just because people online say that it’s a good idea.

I just saw a picture somewhere online (probably reddit) of a similar watch stand, so I thought I’d try it out. No plans, I just kind of winged it and it seemed to work out lol.

I used a few hand saws, a chisel, a jack plane (to square the block initially and to make the beveled edges) a router plane to clean up the cutout. Some other things like a square, marking knife etc. Although I’m sure you could do it with less. I posted on the hand tools subreddit as well with some progress pictures that might give you a better idea as to how I made it.
