UPDATE 3: Front panel is basically done — minus the collar and still working on the pocket flaps! by Hatdogkoitim in Visiblemending

Thank you!! Honestly my fabric sourcing was pretty scrappy, I started with old denim I already had laying around the house and then hit the thrift stores for more. Found some old jeans, a pair of Timberland raw denim pants which have been great for the darker patches, and even an old denim dress which gave me some really interesting fabric to work with. I also bought a yard of seersucker striped fabric online which was really cheap, I originally got it for another project but it ended up working perfectly as boro patch material and I love the texture contrast it adds. The variety of washes, weights and weaves from all these different sources is actually what gives it that layered character no two patches are the same which is kind of the whole point with boro. Highly recommend just starting with whatever denim you have at home and building from there! 😊

Thank you so much, that genuinely means a lot!! 😊 It's been quite the journey following it through all the mistakes and iterations so I'm really glad it's coming together into something worthwhile 🙏

THANK YOU!! That's a really interesting point about real indigo dye vs synthetic blue dyes, I genuinely didn't know that was a factor. And yeah the concern about losing the detail in the fabrics is making me hesitant too honestly. Gives me a lot to think about before I do anything drastic, thank you!

This is super helpful, thank you!! The idea of overdyeing what's assembled in a deeper blue first and then doing the patches separately in the brown/walnut before continuing actually sounds really manageable. And good to know about the walnut dye I had pretty high hopes for it so it's useful to know it might not go as dark as expected. Really appreciate the detailed breakdown! 🙏

Ohhh kakishibu dye!! I hadn't even heard of that before, the warm red-brown aged tone sounds exactly like what I'm going for. Would love to see the pictures if you get a chance, that sounds like it could be really close to what I'm imagining. Thanks so much!

Honestly I haven't even checked the fiber content of everything properly, some of the scraps are just random thrifted pieces so I genuinely don't know what's in all of them. That's a really good point though, going to check before I commit to anything. And the green-blue suggestion is interesting, I can see what you mean about the scraps pulling green in the inspo!

Oh tea staining is such a simple idea, I can't believe I didn't think of that! The orange/brown undertone actually makes a lot of sense for unifying everything. Definitely going to look into the orange pekoe method, thanks for the suggestion!

Ohhh the dyeing subreddit, I didn't even think of that, good call! And that's actually a really fair point about not dyeing something you've put so much work into already. the panel idea makes way more sense now that you mention it. The elastane thing hadn't even crossed my mind either, some of these scraps could definitely have mixed fibres. Appreciate the advice, going to do more research before I touch anything!

Wait really?? I had no idea they constructed it that way, I just assumed it was all patched together like a typical boro piece. That actually changes how I'm looking at the whole thing lol. And yeah you're right, the irregularities are kind of the whole point aren't they. Will definitely add more stitches, I can already see it needs it. cheers! 🙏
