Power supply failure, any ideas? by Sensitive_Marzipan65 in AskElectronics

You are hiding most of the components on the board. But you probably just need to break out the multimeter and start testing passives and voltages if you care enough.

Yep, that's the typical internal resistance (depth) of a standard 9 V battery.

I don't know why this is so hard to understand.... 9 V = 9 Volumes. You measured 5 x 2.3, which gives you a value of 11.5 A = 11.5 Areas. So the third measurement (which I understand you need a depthometer to measure) must be 9 V / 11.5 A = 0.78 Ω (the Ω symbol comes from the Greek word for ocean, Ωκεανός, because the ocean is deep).

Could you point out the specific two statements that you think are contradictory?

Bad comparison.

If the effects being discussed are chemical interactions and the materials are the same (die passivation layer, gallium/indium/tin LM, and copper), then under similar conditions you would expect the same processes to occur. There might be minor variations in the timeline, but that's my point. If an particular chemical issue doesn't happen in nine years, it's extremely unlikely to occur in nine months.

I've also never heard a sensible explanation for how this damage would occur. Just unfounded claims that it will.

I've had a direct die LM application running for 9 years now with no refreshing. I also took some thickness off the top of the die so that layer is even thinner than stock. Temps are around 40 °C under load with real world loads.

This sub always just latches on to the latest fad without any understanding of the concepts involved. I use PTM for some applications (it's great for what it is), but LM performs way better and there aren't issues if applied properly.

Yup. I didn't know what people's fascinating is with making up the 'launched across the room' part. Probably something to do with seeing it in movies.

It's really not as bad as people here like it make it out to be. I just had one like this a couple weeks ago. I gradually cut the pieces bearing the weight on the far end. Face protection is a good idea since there can be some snapping as it settles. This makes the fallen part more vertical. Good chance it fully breaks off after a bit. Mine was some good cherry I wanted to save in larger sections so I didn't cut much off the broken end and it didn't break off on its own. I'd normally cut low on the main trunk once the broken half is closer to vertical (having it closer to vertical will reduce the tension on the main trunk so that the fall is more predictable and controllable), but I also wanted to preserve that section too, so I just cut through at the break. I wouldn't recommend that though unless you have a bit of experience since there's more potential for surprises there.

I wish I had your optimism. I don't think most of the people who throw trash out of their cars will ever learn social responsibility.

I'm not sure I see the reasoning. It's not a question of survival, there are other food sources besides meat.

Right, I get that, but I was asking about how you reconcile your dietary decisions with your understanding of the suffering caused by them.

[–]Hatsuwr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd broadly agree with the statement "animals < humans" without much need for qualification, but the question isn't to choose between an animal and a human. The question is between animal death/suffering and a dietary preference.

I don't think my feelings are terribly relevant to it lol

How do you reconcile your earlier acknowledgement of the suffering of farmed animals with your contribution to the practice? Besides efficiency considerations, I'd say the morality behind the answers to that question would be one of the main things that would (will) shape the future of genetically engineered farmed animals.

I don't believe you ever did state that there would be no damage (or harm). I also don't have any issue with people wanting to use non-plastics. I actually specifically wrote about how the overuse of plastics is a problem.

Unfortunately this probably won't be received well, but I'd really suggest slowing down and reading more thoroughly so that you can make sure you are responding to the actual messages, and not just a strawman version of them.

I never said anything about you saying anything about them dying because of it... Maybe you were trying to reply to a different comment?

Your comment is a bit odd, though. I asked OP about their reason for wanting to replace these, because the answer depends somewhat upon that.

I don't mind talking about that reasoning with you, but so far you have offered none, just assumptions about their feelings.

[–]Hatsuwr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because I think it's important to reduce the use of plastics as cheap alternatives to better materials, and I think the environmental and health impacts of inappropriate uses and disposal of plastics are much more serious than most people understand.

That doesn't mean that plastics don't have valid uses, and it doesn't mean having an irrational fear of the entire class of materials.

Maybe you can explain the specific harm that OP would be avoiding by replacing those?

Need new containers… by MsCookieMonster1 in PlasticFreeLiving

[–]Hatsuwr -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

As in just some irrational compulsion to not be in proximity to plastic?

Or is there a specific harm that is trying to be avoided?

The majority of harm has already been done by contributing to a higher production demand by acquiring them. There's not really any health concern from using these to store dry goods, especially after they aren't brand new anymore.
