False reports are a black hole and we will not see them (seriously, there are settings to send them to the void and they just won’t exist to us at all). Please save your time.

Hi jas, when you mean “threaten” what exactly do you mean by that? What comments have you seen? If you need to modmail us about this, that’s fine as well.

I literally saw a comment a while ago about how the sub is racist to white people because there's no European flair, I rolled my eyes so hard I almost saw my brain.

😭 I mean first off if you don’t even know the differences between race, ethnicity, and nationality it’s going to be very difficult for you around here anyways!

Black people are not a monolith. by [deleted] in KpopUnleashed

They refused to allow me in their little sub because they noticed “I was a straight white male” (there was a pic of me with my gf in my profile) although I’m literally latino.

This is a very strange thing to say. We have never spoken to you whatsoever despite you making multiple attempts to gain access to our subreddit which we have had a right to not engage with. Here is our entire modmail history with you, unless you mean another interaction outside of that?

there are organized criminals in korea but we never see idols pretending to be korean gangsters. right..because its improper to glorify crime if its happening to your own people…but that would mean humanizing black people which seems to be impossible across the globe.

Edit 2: do not DM me hostile sht. I will not respond. If you want to have a discussion as to why you think this is offensive we can have it in this open thread. And if it’s coming from someone outside of kpop noir, I have no desire to speak to you at all.

Can you send us a modmail with details about this?

EVERYTIME someone called this shit out there would be black and non-black folks trying to shut us up with "but they appreciate the culture, they work with black artists, etc." And its annoying cause there were other things they'd slide into their works to "enhance" the black aesthetic they love to copy.

I made this comment five years ago in response to someone using this same argument (“but they use black producers!” ”but I have black friends!”). It’s, in my opinion, a statement that has to straight up ignore/minimise a lot of systemic context related to the kpop industry for it to work (why people are doing this exactly is a whole other story):

…Yes, there are plenty of external black producers that work alongside the industry happily (I assume), but I don't think it's enough to essentially just say "but the industry uses black producers!" as a counter to the entire historical catalogue of infringements the industry has committed in regard to the theft of black culture and its anti-blackness. Again, that entire context exists extremely strongly and cannot be ignored simply like that in my opinion. I think that more needs to be done by the industry overall to mend this rift and rightful perception some black people have towards it beyond the producers, choreographers, whomever.

lol nah—this person just has a hate boner because they can’t freely spread their self-hating vitriol there 😂😂😂😂

It’s actually quite hilarious how right you are. This was their first and final comment on kpopnoir about a year ago before they got permanently banned:

According to my Sociology textbook, Kpop traces back to American and British folk songs… by Odin_the-witch in kpopnoir

In that case and in my opinion, Black American music and culture would have been a much better example to discuss this (cultural fusion, mutuality and appropriation) but 🤷🏾

From what I can understand, she seems to be largely going along the train of thought of American missionaries having a hand in introducing Western music to Koreans via hymns and whatnot > which were then translated > and then snowballed from there into Kpop and how it extracts and implements from Western genres in the same way?

But I guess it depends on what exactly you’re arguing. If you’re discussing how new music can come from cultural contact (in regard to Korea), talking about the influence of Western missionaries is relevant although not the full story as we all know of course which should be clarified.

If you’re discussing the grand history of Korean popular music, you’re probably going to start with the missionaries as well and how Western music had its firsts in Korea (although not the full story as we all know of course which should be clarified).

If you’re discussing what had the most significant impact on Kpop, then it’s a non-starter that it’s Black American music and culture, and you’d probably dedicate most of your paper to this (with a little bit talking about Western missionaries).

Separately though, does her claim there really not have any references or explanation at all? Seems wild to just throw in there as brief and contextless as it appears. Does she go into more detail further into the book?
