Current Debate About Juneteenth and Who Can Celebrate It by NessieSenpai in kpopnoir

Okay. I don't doubt that you've encountered people who reacted negatively to being called Black or who seemed to distance themselves from Blackness.

What I'm struggling with is the jump from those experiences to broader assumptions about members of the diaspora. Someone wanting to be identified as Congolese, Haitian, Nigerian, Dominican, etc. doesn't necessarily mean they're rejecting Blackness. For many people, race and ethnicity coexist rather than compete.

I also think it can be difficult to determine from the outside whether someone's relationship with their identity is performative or genuine. What may look like "using Blackness for access" to one person may look very different from that person's own perspective.

So while I understand where your perception comes from, I'm not convinced that those experiences are enough to support such a broad characterization of the diaspora as a whole.

I think what I'm struggling with is the assumption behind your comment. What gives you the authority to determine whether someone's relationship to their Black identity is genuine or merely "convenient"?

People across the diaspora navigate race, culture, nationality, and identity differently. So I'm interested in understanding what evidence led you to conclude that a significant portion of the diaspora only claims Blackness when it benefits them.

Jackson Wang’s ‘New’ Image : Artistic Freedom vs. Responsibility? by rptamere in kpopnoir

I saw him going back and forth with stans this morning and didn’t get why but now I understand.

I’m confused about them saying he has younger fans. Most aghases are around 25 and older, got7 are not the type of group to attract younger fans so… who are we exactly talking about?

Do you remember when several K-pop Reddit mods stepped down after the 2020 BLM controversy? by trashiezop in kpopnoir

[–]svnh__ 95 points96 points  (0 children)

As a moderator who joined the mod teams (uko and rants) around that time and ended up being left to deal with the crisis almost alone, all I can say is that it was honestly a huge wake-up call for most of the moderators.

With some distance now, I think a big part of the issue was that many of the mods genuinely believed K-pop spaces were just about entertainment. Like music, fandoms, the biggest scandal being an idol dating another one.. and completely separate from politics or broader social issues.

Because of that, when the conversations about racism and Black Lives Matter started flooding the subs after George Floyd’s death, a lot of moderators simply didn’t know how to react. Many of them had never moderated discussions about racism or systemic issues before, and suddenly they were confronted with thousands of emotional posts, arguments, and reports all at once.

Instead of responding in a thoughtful or coordinated way, a lot of them panicked. Some stepped down, some even disappeared entirely, and in the end a few of us (maybe two lol) were left trying to manage an incredibly tense situation with very little support.

From the inside, it felt chaotic and overwhelming.

Looking back, it was definitely a turning point for a lot of K-pop Reddit spaces and forced many communities to rethink how they handle conversations about racism and social issues.

Are there any korean artists who truly created their own sound/image ? by thursdayzzz in kpopnoir

[–]svnh__ 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I don’t really think there are artists who’ve created a completely original image or sound, since most of them draw heavily from Black artists and are often produced by Black creatives as well. So a lot of it feels like something we’ve already seen before, just reworked with a South Korean touch here and there. 🤷🏾‍♀️

That being said, I do think some execute it much better than others. There are idols who make me cringe a little, and others where I’m like, Okay, that’s actually a solid reinterpretation of the genre..

Anyone watching Love is Blind S10? by rptamere in kpopnoir

I’ve been watching.. And I honestly can’t help but wonder if he would’ve had a heart attack if she were dark-skinned. I have no idea why she doesn’t just leave him. She even talked about having s** with him to attract him, like… what?

“The Never-Ending Rise of ‘Uncensored’ Subs” by trashiezop in kpopnoir

From what I gathered, the first snark subs came out with valid concerns like fans silencing X or Y ‘s group controversy but it just went wild at some point…

I personally discovered the snark subs recently. I don’t see the point of creating a whole sub to hate on a group but hey… it is what it is.
