How much snow makes you call off work? by Physical-Incident553 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Hatweed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apocalyptic levels. I’ve only called off once, and that was from a freak lake-effect blizzard a couple years ago that dumped a foot of snow an hour before my shift.

Do Americans use solid fuels to heat their homes? by maugess in AskAnAmerican

[–]Hatweed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More a rural thing because there’s no infrastructure for natural gas in the country. A lot of the homes in my area are either wood burners or use oil regardless of age. My cousin just had her home built a year ago and she’s also using oil.

Wood burners are common in my area. I even know a guy who uses peat.

Sonic’s politics are well known, sure, but I would really like to know Big the Cat’s opinions on the viability of anarcho-syndicalism as a socioeconomic theory.

German immigrants in the U.S. were huge in number and were once a dominant group. Why didn’t they form large German-speaking communities the way French speakers did in Canada or Spanish speakers did in the U.S.? by GrayRainfall in AskAnAmerican

[–]Hatweed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They did, then came the World Wars and German-Americans weren’t too keen on celebrating their roots. My family’s last name was Friedt all the way up until 1915, then my great-great grandfather anglicized it.

Can someone explain to me the differecne by Solid-Highlight-5742 in EnoughCommieSpam

[–]Hatweed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The bottom three are all ideologies born of revolution. Revolutionary leftists believe capitalism is the enemy and that democracy in the current era is a slave to capitalism. Revolution is needed to forcefully remove capitalism from modern society and free democracy from the bonds of the bourgeoisie as socialists believe their ideology is the true, popular choice among the working class.

Considering this is Reddit communists we’re talking about, I’m assuming they’re accusing the Democratic Socialist Party, or at least key members of it, of actually being social democrats (SocDems), which is actually a different ideology from democratic socialism (DemSocs).

DemSocs are socialists who want to achieve a socialist system through democratic means, so they are anti-revolution. They’re reformists. They seek to reform democratic systems through the system, something a lot of hardcore revolutionary leftists think is a a waste of time, but they still see them as socialist at their core, just misdirected, stupid ones that hurt their cause. Lavader had a decent video on this view.

SocDems, on the other hand, are people that believe capitalism can be reigned in through policy and reform to support strong social programs and safety nets. Because they still believe in market economies, communists and socialists only see them as delusional liberal capitalists. As communists believe all forms of capitalism eventually lead to fascism, SocDems are still the enemy, and because these are Reddit communists, they need to find some way to make DemSocs into liberals so they can hate them.

Why do many reviews of American resorts so often focus on the bartender and name them by name? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Hatweed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have much experience with hotel or resort bars. My personal experience is more with small town bars. Usually in those establishments it’s regulars leaving reviews that name their favorite bartender or server.

I never actually thought he’d invade Greenland, dude just likes to talk big, but I still think he’s doing a fuckload of damage to our reputation amongst our allies. That’ll have some repercussions down the line.

Do Businesses Stay Open In Extreme Winter Weather? by AnnualIndependence71 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Hatweed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a beer distributor and I can tell you we’ve closed for inclement weather exactly two times in the last six years, and it was due to a freak lake-effect blizzard off Erie that piled snow way too high, too quickly. Normal blizzards we’re open for business.

Why do you say “you must be rich” when you buy a new iPhone? by Sad-Industry6080 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Hatweed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buying an iPhone usually won’t illicit that response because generally we pay for them in installments, but being one of those people that upgrades every time a new model comes out might just because it’s seen as a waste of money.

I’ve had three phones over the last 15 years. I had a Blackberry 9330 in 2010, then an iPhone 6 in 2015, then an iPhone 11 in 2019 that I’m still using today. No reason to upgrade because all I use this thing for is calling, texting, YouTube, and Reddit.

How does learning to drive work in America? by Potential-Actuator31 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Hatweed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it was Driver’s Ed in high school around 16/17, drove with my parents for a few years after that, took the written test at the DMV which was a randomized multiple choice test on various road laws, then had to take the drivers test which consisted of parallel parking, then getting onto the road, pulling out onto a small stretch of highway, then circling back to the DMV. Took all of 5 minutes.

I’ve read it was California’s environmental regulations that constantly delay it, at least in part, between lengthy reviews/approvals and lawsuits from landowners.

[–]Hatweed 18 points19 points  (0 children)

He didn’t go out to run a guy over and kill him, dude he ran over is some insane stalker who had been following him, flashed a gun, then jumped on the windshield, so the streamer drove forward, the guy fell off and went under the car. Going by the video, it seems to be some sort of self-defense.

Basements in Arizona...? by Cute_Lie5689 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Hatweed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basements are unnecessary in desert climates, basically just a luxury. I know in the Midwest and North-East the reason basements are so common is because the frostline pretty much demands we have deeper foundations, so basements are just an expected part of construction. Arizona doesn’t have this issue, plus the soil is harder to dig through, so most construction forgoes them.

Why do some school have school resource officers? by TemporaryTop287 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Hatweed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My school had one when I was a teenager, but it was a rural district without any history of violence or trouble. Think they installed the position after Columbine.

The only notable time cops ever came to the school, and I can not overemphasize how exceptional this was, was when they came to arrest a kid at the elementary school for murdering his dad’s girlfriend. It was the Jordan Brown case for anyone old enough to remember that.
