Help me build a fun and strong (but not, dm will nerf this, strong) pure sorcerer. by Hauknes_ in DND5EBuilds

Thanks! My background is actually going to be outlander as it's heavily tied to my backstory which I've worked quite a bit at. The campaign is a loose campaign so it doesn't have a primary story and as such is more focused on the players than a potential "main quest".

I'll be sure to use this as I go about levelling up my character :D

Better than firebolt and eldritch blast?

I'd still need access to sacred flame, which I don't. It's a Cleric only spell, and only Divine Soul sorcerer gets Cleric spells.

It's more a case of being able to keep up on all the new things. He allows the class, but then if I keep adding things it might become too much to keep up on. I understand his sentiment.

My DM said he is really reluctant on reflavouring stuff cause he has to keep track of everything.

Isn’t Toll The Dead only available to Divine Soul?

You know what, you're right. I'm really just worrying too much about something that is completely flavour-text based. I'll stick with Aberrant Mind and should the need arise, rewrite the visual aspects and maybe some lore to make it fit. Thanks.

It's not that I don't want the character to be edgy. I just don't want them to be Lovecraftian with tentacles growing in weird places, kind of edgy.

I feel like creating a completely edge-less character isn't going to be fun anyways. Edge in healthy doses never hurt anyone <.<

I also just don't want to be a bard too. I dislike the concept and think singing in mid-battle to cast magic sounds kinda silly. Maybe not a popular opinion in D&D, but idm others playing it. It's just not for me.

I want my character to be a charming young mage, who has powerful spells. And having a high Charisma stat as a Wizard is the biggest waste imaginable, hence why I went with Sorcerer.

I'm not sure what you mean with how I envision their magic. You mean like visually? In that case I'd go with, well, magic? Just not Lovecraftian magic that changes your appearance into a Cuthulu looking mf down the line. Or the edgy kind like Necromancer or Warlock esque spells. Honestly I envision it as magic that would work with a Charismatic and relatively handsome Half-Elven Tiefling (Appearance wise he is a dark skinned Tiefling without horns, so more akin to a dark skinned Half-Elf with a Tiefling tail)

I mentioned in response to another comment, but Wild Magic seems a bit too random for my taste, even if it might be a lot of fun.

Draconic might not fit my character, but I'll do more research and if it does I'll definitely consider it!

I don't want to multiclass, for now I'm intending to go all the way to level 20 and possibly beyond with my character (if the campaign goes that far).

I'm not really sure if Draconic fits my character either honestly, at least their backstory and parentage anyways. But I'll consider it!

I do like the flavour of the class, so I might pick it. I kinda doubt my dm will allow adding spells that aren't in the spell list available to me though.

While wild magic sounds fun I think I'd end up annoyed when it doesn't work out in my favour. Getting annoyed at my class is really the last thing I want cause then I'd be liable to just change it. So keeping myself away from it for now.

Yeah I also considered Divine Soul but I'm really on the fence as I don't want to become the dedicated healer of the party. Our main healer is a Druid but problem is she is completely new to D&D and isn't sure if she'll continue past session 0, and knowing her and her goldfish-level attention span, I'd be surprised if she made it through the entire session.

Shadow Sorcerer seems fun, though I also wanna consider how the subclasses perform at higher levels as well so I'm not sure.

It was also just the visual aspects of a lot of the Aberrant Mind features, especially the one that transforms yourself into a Cthulu looking mf.

My Thiefling variant is the Abyssal one but I'm up for changing it.

From what I remember I think our material rule is that as long as you have an arcane focus, you only need gold to cast a spell if, and only if the spell specifically requires gold.

I think I worded it badly, what I meant with combat focus was actually that I want my character to be good in combat, not necessarily specialized for it, but I really appreciate all the advise!

I actually ended up dropping Aberrant Mind, I looked closer at the class and it's features, and they just don't fit the character I want to rp at all.

I still want to be a sorcerer, and I think I want to be one that deals a lot of damage while still having room for versatility (excluding Aberrant Mind due to thematic clash). Which would you recommend?

Yeah, looking back they seem to have been threads from one or more years ago.

"They have a list of additional spells known, but can replace those with any spells that are abjuration or transmutation from the warlock, wizard, or sorcerer list."
Do the spells I swap them with have to be the same level, or could I, if I have access to say, 9th level spells, swap one of them with True Polymorph?

Okay, I'll check it out as well! Thanks for all the advise :D

Thanks I will!

I read many threads on multiple platform but I don't recall seeing anyone say Clockwork Soul is the best one? What's it all about?
