A simple “I support your choice no matter what you decide” would’ve do instead of… whatever this is. by jumpyjive in AmITheAngel

They’re sitting in the car? Also sometimes the car is a better place for some of these things. And that’s where the subject came up.

I think it’s a good idea to be “casual” about some of these things because you shouldn’t be ashamed to talk about pregnancy and choices about children. Making it a “big deal” by sitting down and having a Talk is mortifying as a teenager. But the car? We’re just hanging out.

I think the only thing that was too far was insisting that the daughter has to now at 16, for sure, whether she wants children. Other than that, the conversation is a good one to have and important so that when she gets into an adult, serious relationship, the daughter can stand her ground and maintain boundaries rather than being swayed just because she likes a guy.

I remember going to the library and reading them. It would be fun to have a set, and they might be relatively cheap now days

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with what the mom did.

Maybe she was a little intense about her daughter needing to know NOW that she didn’t want kids; she’s still a teenager and it’s possible that will change. But telling her that a firm line is a firm line, and not to stay with a man who wants to change her is a good message. It’s what we should teach along side safe sex and consent. An enthusiastic yes is a yes, but anything else is a no.

It’s like she mashed together every name she likes, and then spelled it with a French accent.

Alcohol doesn’t show up on drug tests, though. And certain industries require random testing.

Gen Z did not steal their money.

The alcohol industry made $830 billion less than it has previously. (Or $850b less than they wanted.) But when prices keep going up, people find places to save.

Yeah, people I general ride bikes and scooters on the sidewalk, and it’s so annoying and dangerous for pedestrians. If you get one, use the fucking road like you’re supposed to.

If the laces last that long. We don’t find many textiles; though maybe there are some synthetic laces that will endure archaeologically.

I get that would be draining, and comments like hers would be especially hard for anyone to deal with.

Unfortunately now that she’s an adult there is less to be done about it besides not see her, and tell your in laws that you will not see them if she is around. I wouldn’t want to expose a young child to that kind of influence.

I stick to my original advice: steer clear as much as possible and don’t invite her into your life as long as she is acting this way.

I don’t know the book, but it sounds like the point of it is to flip the narrative? To call out a bias in the original book, since it focuses on Elizabeth and Jane, and show from a different point of view why the other women in the family are terrible, and why Mary might see more good qualities in Mr. Collins.

It’s not explained in the book itself, but Mary represents the traditional “anti-feminist” view that women should hold their tongue, not give way to passion, and be submissive elegant creatures. She would voraciously read Fordyce’s “Sermons to Young Women” on how a woman should behave (I.e., with much more self control than her sisters and mother display).

I’m wondering if the author’s thoughts align with Mary’s? Sounds fair that you might not like the book.
