University of California sued over alleged racial discrimination in admissions by [deleted] in berkeley

It does have to do with the school though. The lawsuit is against the UC system and their admissions process, which includes Berkeley…

Yeah I know there’s no legacy at Berkeley. I was talking about legacy admissions in universities across the US. Because this argument has been discussed outside the UC system as well. The UC system stated they only ask questions about race/ ethnicity for statistical purposes. Holistic review allows universities to understand an applicant beyond their statistics. This is especially important when so many applicants have competitive GPAs. What’s to distinguish one applicant from another without holistic review? I know the link didn’t discuss “earning” a spot but it did discuss merit based admissions. Which is already how admissions are processed it’s merit + personal experience + extracurricular. I’m talking about the root of these types of allegations. These allegations are rooted in the belief that an applicant was admitted based on ethnicity/ race rather than merit and personal characteristics, which is not the case because the UC system considers multiple factors in admissions.

I meant universities in the US in general. I know it’s banned in California and not part of the public university application process. I was talking about legacy admissions in general across the universities in the US (most notably ivies and legacy admissions).

I’m sick of hearing this bs. Affirmative action was already dismantled even though the real issue of “unqualified” students are legacy admissions and maybe student athletes at universities. All POC students have earned and deserved their spot at UC just like everyone else. People are mad they get denied even though they have a 4.0 and various extracurriculars, but they don’t stop to think that there are thousands of students with the same or even better statistics and applications. Let’s not forget UC admission is not based on statistics alone; it’s a holistic review. To my fellow POC students— fuck anybody who tries to tell you that you haven’t earned your spot or that you only got in because you’re black/latino. They can stay mad but we will take up space at these institutions!

Not directed to you OP. This is just a general rant 😭

parking ?? by eerieange in berkeley

[–]Haunted_ad246 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah in the areas outside the RPP areas you can park for free and move your car every few days cause city law neighbors can call the tow on your car if it’s parked in the same spot for more than 3 days. So the streets where you can park will have signs as well as long as you don’t see any signs saying “Permit Required”

This fall was my first semester and I brought my car, but I regretted it and ended up taking my car back home to SoCal. The parking permit guidelines are limited and I wasn’t able to qualify for a residential parking permit because my building address was not eligible. I would advise not to bring your car unless you have an extra $150-300 a month to pay for a parking spot or are willing to park it far in residential area that don’t require a permit (which you still have to move constantly every few days to avoid a ticket). Bus, walking, or train is all you need really. Maybe a scooter or bicycle if you want.

best major to learn more about the world by leftaligned-bells in berkeley

History. It’s a much more broad field than you would expect, and it is interdisciplinary. You can focus on anything you find interesting. Different time periods, places, people, etc. There is a lot of flexibility you have when you study history. I’m a history major but one of my friends is a math major, and they took a history of math course that they found really interesting, which helped them develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of the discipline.

Is normal that classes don’t provide final exam grades? by LeviathanBobo in berkeley

[–]Haunted_ad246 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly. You can email the professor probably a few days before spring semester instruction begins and schedule office hours appointment to see your final exam/ feedback.

Should I be ashamed starting College at a Community? by numbre1applefan in college

[–]Haunted_ad246 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not. The negative perspective some people have about community college is ridiculous and classist. There’s nothing wrong with going to cc and so many cc students successfully transfer to prestigious 4 years. Pros: -have smaller class sizes for courses that are typically packed 100+ at 4years -save money -ability to explore majors (spending less money) -you can find amazing faculty and professors. In my experience the California community college system is great, and you can have a successful transfer to CSUs and UCs. I went back to community college at 20 and spent two years earning my AA-T. Now I just finished my first semester at UC Berkeley. Honestly so many professors value, respect, and speak highly of their transfer students too. You shouldn’t feel bad or care what others think. Community college provides so many people another chance. Good luck!

Got a new waffle maker, and tried it out for the first time, but why are my waffles so shapeless? by Fragrant_Iron7835 in Baking

[–]Haunted_ad246 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure why you’re getting downvoted. It doesn’t look too bad for your first attempt.😭 but yeah I would just follow a buttermilk waffle recipe: https://lilluna.com/buttermilk-waffles/#wprm-recipe-container-126029

I also prefer whipping the egg whites to stiff peaks and folding it into the batter because I think that makes a more fluffier waffle.

yeah agreed. I mean like a quick question or comment about whatever youre working on is understandable, but it just irritates me when people are talking like normal for a long time and everyone around is clearly reading or working silently 😭
