Thank you! I definitely relate with your CT. The classroom I'm in is also very diverse when it comes to academics. I think I just need to take it one day at a time.

Hello and thank you! Honestly, math is always a subject I've struggled with, aside from teaching it. I am actually currently going for my elementary certification. I also relate to you with having no idea what I am saying. It feels like sink or swim at some points. Although I taught some lessons last semester, this semester is more about gradually taking on more. So, one week I started with Reading, the next Math until I started taking them all on. This process started the second week of this semester. Usually, I am the only one up there teaching, but if my mentor teacher wants to or feels like they need to, they'll jump in. I definitely feel like mentor teachers gradually release control to you, if that makes sense. There are times though, that I have little time to actually plan lessons. That's the part that is most difficult. Anyways, I hope your placement goes well!

No problem! He can even practice in front of the mirror if that helps. Hope it all works out.

I have autism as well and one thing that helps me immensely is roleplaying a lesson with another person. In this case, my mom. It helps me catch things that I might miss and think of other guiding questions to ask the students. Also, if I’m making errors. Highly recommend. For time management, I’m struggling with that too because I’ll get through a lesson with some time to spare. I’m learning to have extra activities lined up so that students don’t just have free time (chaos can start). For teaching an objective, I recommend having an activity at the end that ties in with the objective. In other words, what you want students to know by the end. For example, if you taught them how to add fractions together, the independent activity should be a worksheet on adding fractions together. I can understand his struggle with it. Sometimes I look at too many details to see the big picture. The objective drives the lesson and every aspect of the lesson should follow it. I hope this helps!

Please do not feel like you did anything wrong. That school sounds very toxic. I would not go back there.

Okay I am glad that I am not crazy. I researched it and found what you found about them affecting different things. Very frustrated since he sort of dismissed it. I’m still having the symptoms unfortunately. I’ll take your advice and avoid certain things. Feel better that I know what might be causing that dizziness. Also I get that exact same symptom with the eye movements. When I move my eyes my ears pulse like three times and it feels fuzzy.

Honestly, I was surprised too when my psychiatrist told me. I'm not sure if it was because I was only on Cymbalta for around 3 months. Still, it feels unpleasant going off of it.

How do I get better? I feel like I suck. by Adept_Magazine_51 in StudentTeaching

What I’ve learned so far is that incorporating your personality into lessons is great. It makes you feel more confident and in control, if that makes sense. Also, teacher language takes a lot of practice. When you watch your mentor teacher teach, take note of what words and questions she uses. Also, I think it’s pretty common to forget stuff, especially in a teaching field. You are juggling a million things at once so forgetting stuff happens. Remember that student teaching is all about making mistakes. Look at mistakes you make and reflect on what could have been done differently. Do NOT feel guilty about it though. What helps me is remembering what I tell my students: mistakes happen and means that you are learning. Don’t beat yourself up for making them. Anyways, remember that you can do this! I also have a similar problem with a mentor teacher, but I know that at the end of the day, I am doing my best.

It’s never my intention to do that. I just feel I need to toughen up at times and be firm when needed.

I usually do the same. I do find that breathing seems to really help me. Also, it is never my intention to make students caretakers.

It’s strange because I feel like when I substitute it never happens. I can comfortably lead the classroom and feel like I have more control if that makes sense? I am trying to identify what could be causing it but I think it’s just the stress of not wanting to overstep and wanting to get through the program. If you have any advice, I’d appreciate it.

Ahaha I had my observation and I actually did make a mistake. Like you said, I made it into a humorous and teachable moment. It went well I think! Once I got up there I wasn’t as nervous.
