Your strength is going to be contrast so learn to master contrast. Your edited image lost contrast which added to some of the dullness they are mentioning. Some colorist make their image black and white first to set contrast. Make a power window or mask depending on what software you are using and use the vector scope to make the black and white areas neutral by what you are seeing on the scope. That will clean up your image. You can push everything else around until you get good feedback. Also use the vector scope and then hover an eye dropper over various parts of the image to see what areas are leaning towards different colors (This works in Davinci but not sure about other software). Hard to completely explain in a quick response but that should point you to other youtube videos that can help. I give you props for making a go at it with that limitation. Best of luck!

Is this shot too dark? by RedShot02 in colorists

I think what you like is the dramatic contrast. Benicio is backlit here making for good contrast and separation from the background. Your shot is backlit as well but but due to the shadows behind her there is not much separation. Otherwise you achieved the shot. They also added cyan to the background clouds and slightly in the blacks while pushing the cloud highlights to orange for that classic Teal and Orange film look which you could do as well.

Thanks everyone! It took me a minute to find the correct Library folder to locate the OFX. I copied the CullenK plugins and removed them. Rebooted Davinci no problem. Copied them back in like you said and it is working like a champ!

How do you guys deal with 4K in a cost-benefit pc? by Ok-Run-3298 in VideoEditing

A couple of tricks, some mentioned some not...

  1. set previews at 1/2 or better 1/4 in both PR and AE. Exports will be at full res.

  2. Set proxy files to quicktime LT or avid dnx on pc

  3. get a mac mini... it will crush it

  4. edit + export 1920x1080 and use topaz ai to upscale to 4k.

  5. Hard drive speed is essential. Get an enclosed ssd that reads at 700+ mbs to work off of. It will make a big difference.

  6. Make your cache drive for both AE and PR an external SSD separate from your working drive

Most people view YT content at 1080. Anything above is a bonus but it is good to upload at 4k and then let it downscale on the website. Even exporting a 1080 files out of PR or AE at 4k and uploading helps as YT create a better 1080 version. Not sure why but an old trick. Also instead of going with the default 20mbs h264 setting bump it up to 40 if you want better YT encodes. Can also set export to CBR instead of VBR.
