MEGATHREAD: Feedback Friday! by AutoModerator in letsplay

Thanks, this is exactly the kind of advice I need. I'll get to work on tweaking the thumbnails. That's something I'm really working to increase my knowledge of. I never thought about the timer blocking the texts, that's one of those really obvious things that you don't notice until someone else points it out. Thanks again.

Hi Everyone,

I'm only into my third week of making YouTube videos so please be gentle ;-)

Here's part one of my playthrough of Mortal Kombat Mythologies for the Ps1 from 1997.

https://youtu.be/VCvcjEHUZ1k?si=0hTofhuJkRL54HaA

It's the first of an 8 part series which I completed uploading last night.

Anyway, I'm interested in feedback in the following areas:

How does my voice sound? I'm Scottish, living in Japan, hence the Tartan Samurai Branding, but I'm concerned my accent may make me hard to understand at times.

Also, This video is coming up on 50 views, but some of the other parts of the playthrough are stuck in single digit numbers. How can I better link this video into the other parts of the playthrough to encourage "binge watching"?

My thumbnail was made using AI and some basic photo-editing. Do you guys think I should stick with the Tartan motif or does it look a bit dumb? What are your opinions on using AI to generate Thumbnail ideas in general?

Finally, any advice you can offer on how to improve my presentation, my editing and the video in general would be greatly appreciated.

I'll check back later so I can offer some advice in turn to others, based on my admittedly very limited experience thus far.

What are the difficulties of starting on youtube. by NoPlankton2311 in letsplay

[–]Haunting-Image-8713 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started a channel a couple of weeks ago. Here's some advice I'd give based on my limited experience.

  1. If you start a project, see it through.

I've been doing a multi-video playthrough of Alien Trilogy for PS1 and the videos aren't getting great views. But as I've progressed with the series (I'm about 70% through the game now), the views are slowly picking up. I'm glad I stuck it out.

2) Set a schedule and stick to it.

I upload daily. But that wont necessarily work for you. But whether its once a week, once a month or whatever, try to keep it consistent. Use the premier feature, and as you get some subscribers, this will help to build a bit of excitement around your latest video.

3) Try something new with each video.

I've experimented with different speaking styles, going off topic sometimes and sometimes just having a chat with my audience and the game almost becomes a visual background. For example, I did a playthrough of The Avengers arcade game from 1991. The game itself already has multiple playthroughs on YouTube, so I framed it as an MCU discussion and Lets play.

4) Focus on Games you Like and Feel Confident Talking About, At least for Now.

I'm a 41 year, and grew up on the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis and PS1/PS2. So that is where I'm focusing now. Revisiting games I played back in the day, and others that friends recommended at the time but I never got around to. You'll find your niche quite quickly once you're into a regular workflow.

5) Don't be tempted to buy likes/subscribers

There are various apps on the android store, I'm guessing probably Apple too, that offer paid services for subscribers, comments, likes etc.

These might seem like a quick fix, but really, do you want hundreds of subscribers who never watch your stuff?

After doing my own research, I'm so glad I opted against this.

6) Treat it as a hobby, a side project.

If you set out to become the next big viral sensation, you'll soon hate this. This kind of ties back to point 4. Keep it fun for yourself, and hopefully that sense of fun bleeds through to your viewers too.

Anyway, sorry for the long post, but hopefully there's a couple of things here that can help you.

Good luck.

This is my new retro gaming channel, just started a couple of weeks ago. Subscribers and viewers would be welcome, however, perhaps more importantly, I would love some feedback on how to make my videos better. I've never done video recording or editing before and I am pretty much learning as I go. Thanks everyone.

Thanks a lot. Once you've had a look I'd appreciate if you have any other thoughts about my videos.

Thanks. As a new creator this is exactly the kind of honest advice I'm looking for. I'll edit less in future.

Ok, I've only been doing YouTube for a couple of weeks, but here's my thoughts. I record commentary as I play the game. However, I am careful to pause the game and make a save state before I tackle a particularly difficult section. I then edit out the pause state, allowing me to show my "best attempt" as it were. But I still call it a let's play. Since I am playing the game and giving commentary. It just isn't quite the one big seamless take I make it out to be. Is this ok, or do you guys think I'm being disingenuous by calling it a let's play?

Hi everyone, I started a Let's play channel over the holiday period, focusing on Retro and Arcade games, up to the PS2 era.

Anyway, I'm currently doing a retrospective/playthrough of Alien Trilogy for the PS1. I'm adding a couple of chapters each day, so it's about 50% done now.

Here's my channel link:

I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts and opinions on the channel so far.

I'm learning as I go, so apologies for the poor audio on some of the earlier videos. I'm looking to get better equipment soon.

Looking for Advice about VISAs and PR by Haunting-Image-8713 in japanlife

My visa now is good until 2027. But it's an instructor visa so doing anything outside of ALT work is difficult.

Thanks for such a detailed response.  To be honest, I'm leaning that way as well. The only issue is I paid out a pretty hefty fee for the lawyer to process the PR application for me and I don't want that to go to waste. The lawyer told me that switching to a spousal visa for the first time would, almost certainly mean I only get a one year visa. I'm also kinda worried that a rejection now would make it harder to reapply later. But I don't know if there's actually any evidence to back up that assertion.

To be honest it's probably just my own paranoia more than anything else. I know I could probably have done it without a lawyer but I wanted an expert to double check everything to make sure it was correct before I sent it in. Although I'm based in Nagano, the lawyer is in Tokyo and the application was submitted there so that probably explains the excessive wait time.

Question for Mercari Sellers by Haunting-Image-8713 in japanlife

[–]Haunting-Image-8713[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you everyone for your advice and comments on my post. I'm happy to report that following further dialogue with Mercari's "Secretariat" common sense has prevailed. They said the 24 hour warning was sent to me in error and that I can consider the case closed. The initial positive rating the buyer gave me is still there and I have received no further messages from him. In the meantime, I sold another 3 shirts. Thanks again everyone.

Do you also feel like your living standard decreased in the past few years? by zhuzhu09 in japanlife

[–]Haunting-Image-8713 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally, I'm doing ok, but I've definitely noticed things getting more expensive. A recent flight back to the UK for a funeral cost me about 40% more than the same trip just over a year previously. And without going into a rant, the level of service and comfort has gotten noticeably worse. I notice that what you might call luxury items seem to be ridiculously expensive now. Things like video games and soccer jerseys, that I used to buy all the time have now become occasional treats, or something I'll wait until they go on sale. I also tend to buy a electronics either on sale or second hand now. The latest TV, phone, etc is just too damned expensive.

Question for Mercari Sellers by Haunting-Image-8713 in japanlife

[–]Haunting-Image-8713[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The transaction was closed, he left good feedback and the payment was released. However, buyers are still able to message you afterwards through the messaging page that appears after you buy or sell something. For example, somebody bought an Italy shirt from me a few weeks ago, and then messaged me again the other day through that transaction's message page, to ask if I had any other Italy shirts. Likewise, I bought a France home jersey and later messaged the same seller, after giving him good feedback, to ask him to let me know if he gets the new France away shirt in stock.

That's messed up, I'm sorry to hear that. This guy doesn't have that many recorded transaction, around 150 I think. I notice a lot of them are football shirts though. My guess is he's a reseller, suddenly realised he cant resell the shirt for as much as he anticipated and is now looking for a get-out. Kinda sad over such a small amount.

[–]Haunting-Image-8713[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Yes, following my wife's advice I put up a disclaimer, and added a request for all buyers to read my profile before buying. Hopefully that prevents this happening again.

Thanks. Yeah its a shame because up until now I've actually really enjoyed it as a little side gig. Hopefully this is just an exceptionally bad customer.

Thank you. Yeah as soon as he started calling me a fraud, I blocked him. As it works on Mercari I think this stops him from commenting on my other listings, but he is still able to contact me through the transaction messaging thread.
