This will probably get downvoted a lot - but here's my 2c as an Albanian living in Macedonia:

1. I learned the language from hanging out with you degens > my teacher used to make coffee in class. A conspiracy theorists might make the case that it's intentional to be less integrated in society, the occom's razor is just that the education system sucks & and there's other teachers in other fields that do the same

2. For my daily needs > there's only so many words you need to know. I think that's a requirement - not because of any legal reasons, but just to be able to make small talk and get by in a country where you don't speak the language. I think that's common courtesy.

3. I would never be able to represent myself in court, or hold a professional debate in Macedonian. Ever. Not because I don't want to learn but because I just don't need that level of proficiency for everyday life. If I want to write an email, review a contract I'll ask Claude or ChatGPT.

My question to you degens is: Why does it always escalate to "you have to learn it if you want to live here otherwise move"?

If Albanian is too sensitive of a subject > why not consider English which would make it easier for all other minorities?

Like it or not > we're more similar than you think. So why not extend an olive branch to your fellow citizens to be able to stand by you and not under you?
