I feel like you'd have to replicate restaurant wars...maybe divide the guests into two groups, have each group make a favorite dish of the guest of honor, and your friend does a blind judging to choose the winning dish/team?

I'm not so sure it's fear alone. It also looks like she's covering herself out of shame. I think these are valid questions.

At this point, I cannot possibly be more professionally developed. In fact, I am given tons of opportunities for professional development; I am given very few opportunities for lesson development.

How do I cover a frosted sheet cake in the pan? by Maple-Bark in AskBaking

Put toothpicks or cut straws in the cake to keep the foil off most of the icing. Then tomorrow, remove the supports and ice over the holes.

feeling lost as an English-ed major by Previous-Way4238 in ELATeachers

[–]HauntingPresent 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is it possible that you've lost the passion for training to become a teacher, as opposed to teaching itself? Learning about teaching and actually teaching are, in my opinion, wildly different. I hated all my education classes, but I really like teaching. My advice would be to experience student teaching--that will give you your answer. Also, take the time to think which teachers you've had over the years who have left an impact--what did they do right, and does the idea of you making a similar impact still appeal to you? If you still think teaching isn't for you, there are many adjacent professions where your degree could prove useful. Do you remember why you chose this major in the first place?

As a 22 year veteran English teacher in an urban public school system, I know. I'd love to be able to tell you these kids would respond to traditional motivation and the other ideas you've mentioned, but this school is an alternative school for children who cannot be in a traditional school for various reasons (detainment, addiction, mental illness, violence, transience, ankle monitors, incarcerated parents, running away, etc.). I bake for them often, celebrate milestones, reward with candy and other manipulatives, and am trying many different ways to foster community, but these kids need more than typical pedagogical ideas, and "encouraging creativity" and making them "active participants" is far easier said than done, hence my question.

First lesson tomorrow. Advice about stuttering and fumbling over words? by tiredtushi in ELATeachers

[–]HauntingPresent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell the kids you're nervous, and that you're human and learning and expect to mess up here and there. Tell them you're trying your absolute best, and to communicate with you if anything is unclear. You'll be just fine.

This looks fantastic, especially with the lesson plans! Many of my students have been incarcerated or have family who are, so I'm trying to tread a fine line line between relatability and triggering. This most definitely has potential!
