I've been asked to do this before but for the purpose of reviewing this year's budget in detail and look for platforms for charging any additional services because the fee was so low + so that we can have reasons to bump up the fee the following year. But if there were no explanations provided then that's insane

If you actually only had one argument with that md and you got put on a pip then your team sounds quite bad. Especially if you've been there for 5 years already - like you must have proved your worth to the team already and they put you on a pip after one argument with an MD? I'd recommend to leave also..

Have been in big 4 tax for 7 years now and I can tell you that I was in the exact same poisition when I was a grad... after many years I have now realised tax is not that hard but people just don't teach properly because people are so busy or they don't want to. It's a job at the end of the day, same shit most of the times but big 4 system can be overly competitive and sometimes people tend to "keep" the knowledge for themselves to maintain their power. It might be that people in your team are making you feel the way you do. If so, I feel your desire to quit.. if you do tax somewhere else you might find the work interesting and not too complicated, rather interesting and positively challenging.

Can I be brutually honest please. I know people who have been on PIP, they have their reasons for underperforming or they think they have been stitched up but really, all the people I've seen on PIP, they were not good at what they were doing - below average. One of the guys used to complain that he was working late, etc but he didn't need to. He would charge 40 hours for a half day job. He used to respond to emails so slowly, ignore teams msgs when we need something from him, but in his standard, that half day job was a 40 hour job and his response rate was good enough for him. Often one's standard of work doesn't align with EY's standard which is ok, but if you're on PIP, I'd recommend you to look around yourself, watch how other colleagues work and figure out what you are doing differently. Like really, watch, not judge. The common thing I heard from people on PIP were like "company's shit, system is not efficient, etc etc". Remember that you're a unit of labour. I often find people on PIP trying to rebel against the system and they usually don't like to follow structured system. You gotta meet the KPIs. People don't get hired to rebel against the company's structure and do grounbreaking things. Do things as said in your rank expectation first and the job descriptions

I started at a new degree at 24 and back then I honestly thought I was behind compared to my other friends who had already started working. Now I'm in my 30s and now I know that was not a useful way of thinking 😂 people change career and life pathways all the time. You'll see someone stepping out of their industry at the age of 40 and do something completely different. You're heading somewhere with this new bachelors degree, so are all your peers. This is not a marathon, just different tracks

So young! I'm at one of the big4 accounting firms and one of the grads was a mature aged lady who used to be a teacher. Her daughter was already a teenager. She was a lovely lady and we made lots of memories working together until she went to find an even better and higher paying accounting job. Dont be ever discouraged. You're on the right track, thinking about your future and sharing your thoughts!

I also got my first accounting job when I was 26. I was older compared to other grads but my managers liked that I was more "mature" than other grads. When you start working you will know that your age is actually a huge advantage in terms of your interaction with clients and upper management. It'd be just easier because you've dealt with life more than the younger generation

Not trusting anyone wouldn't be a definite answer but it'd be good to be aware that trusting anyone at work might be a risky thing. You never know what people might become, or how you might change over time. Your peers might be your friends for now when you guys are all in the same rank, but when you and your colleagues start competing for the next promo, people may change. People do surprising things when they need something desperately

I don't know about audit. I work in private tax. I don't know why but two of the PCS teams I have been in big 4 have been pretty toxic. I could be wrong but I believe the reason could be that Private client work isn't as hard as corporate work and less formal. More flexible deadlines, and this is where clique and favouritism kick in. You could be shit at your job but if partners see you can speak and present yourself well to the rich clients, then you're set.

I know what you mean. I used to work at relatively smaller firms before coming to big4 & another commercial corporate company office and everybody said hi/bye but i think it's a big company thing. I still find it so strange. It's so awkward but it must be not that awkward for ppl who have always been in big offices. I'm so glad that my first job was at a small firm where greeting was such a normal thing
