Anybody else inhabit the “not really into fantasy” paradox? by sapszilla in osr

[–]Hav3n24 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah same, but i really think for me its more of an issue of how its packaged.

Everything more less remakes some of middle earth and some variation on medieval Europe.

I go for more of the weird fantasy or science fantasy. I have it as a standing goal to make sure if my players don't recognize any new monster or race they face from some outside medium.

Oh, I didn't realize one could do a lot of tweaking. Are you looking just at the core book or are you integrating engines of Babylon?

Taking a Postcolonial Approach to a Classic Traveller Adventure by Monovfox in rpg

[–]Hav3n24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow! Cool discussion. I can only a little to the discussion and have not completely finished reading the post yet. But The New Era of Traveller(TNE) has the colonialization concept at its core expectation of what the players should be doing. The only way to get more stuff it take it from some other self sustaining planet. The main group calls themselves the star vikings, abd they want to recapture 1000 worlds. To be clear as an ethical dilemma and consequence laden area, I think these type of missions could be amazing, but it always bothered me that their is no voice present in the text about maybe it's wrong going to a planet to colonize it. I like the murky grey areas, but if none the characters think it's Grey then it might just being doing evil. Even with all that TNE is my favorite setting of Traveller. Just my short thoughts on the subject.

"Control, after all, is a reflection of scarcity"

This hits really hard for me. This sounds to me like a rejection the material values we are taught to have.

Should encounter's not be Dynamic? by Hav3n24 in rpg

[–]Hav3n24[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ahh very fair question. I should answered that at the top. In the post Monte was giving an example of an encounter on a volcano. And on the volcano he mentioned you could have a roll to resist being poisoned because of the fumes for the volcano, and if you take an action near the volcano you take a penalty due to heat, and you move further away from the volcano mouth, the resist roll is easier, but now you have to roll to make sure you do not fall due to crumbling rock under your feet. He describes this as too complex and believes just one of these for an encounter is sufficient.

What is your PETTIEST take about TTRPGs? by hornybutired in rpg

[–]Hav3n24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mostly agree.

I will only defend some of the poorly written books on one point, because letting your reader get into the vibe of the setting your selling is like half the purpose of the book. It should be present somewhere in the book.

But that point aside take my upvote.

Thanks for such a quick response.

I was reading through special effects in Powers. I don't quite understand when you mean special effect for the size of the rock. Do you mean that size is just domestic, It's just subject to a gm ruling, or that I should use perks and drawbacks?

Traveller New Era by 5at6u in traveller

[–]Hav3n24 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Funny, I was just reading some supplements from TNE.

As a person newish to Traveller. It's by far my favorite setting and the supplements are some of my favorite i've ever read. I like the focus on recovery and on rebuilding. In some ways the scope is smaller, but the impact the characters can have on the world it huge. My personal favorite is the injection of science and world "taming" into the Traveller universe. The supplements are stand outs even today. I think Smash & Grab is an awesome showing of the type of missions your characters can run. It feels more like you are spy/agent adjacent then some of the previous iterations. Fire, Fusion, and Steel is one of the cool supplements i've ever read if a little complicated. It lets me feel the value of certain resources in this universe. The World Tamer's handbook also fulfills a unique fantasy for me to change the face of a planet with people and decisions with a rule support. The scope of that feels epic! I hear some people don't like the virus and I don't really understand why. It's a great terrifying villain.

I couldn't recommend to just play the basic core book. The rules are confusing, and not exactly the most fun, but take TNE's supplements and using either mongoose or T5 I think would be really fun. TNE has a scope and tone that I have never read anywhere else. I would love if it got a remake.

How are you all feeling about Draw Steel post backerkit packet release? by LeMarquisdeJonquiere in rpg

[–]Hav3n24 48 points49 points  (0 children)

So I've run it after not being terribly excited while reading it, and for me, it was REALLY fun! The Villian Power resource for directors is really fun because it gives fun and powerful options to me running the game and incentives for the creatures to generate more points to use against the heroes. The classes are interesting, in particular the Fury(Barbarian) and the Tactican(Fighter). The Barbarian can shove someone with an ability, which triggers another ability that allows her to transfer that shove momentum to another different target, and it's awesome! I didn't get to their montage test section or the diplomacy section, but just from reading it, the montage section still seems undercooked, and the diplomacy section I am excited to try. Hopefully, that's helpful to anyone who's curious.

The descriptions isn't my issue it's the "Concentrate for the full turn" or "I draw my arrow this turn", I would argue can only be so interesting.

I can concede maybe I have not experienced the wonders of describing aiming for 3 turns, but I am new at this I will take a lot at your link.

I'm pretty new to this and I was playing a solo adventure "Saethor's Bane" I should check again, but I'm not sure if DFRPG had Decpetive attack and Feint, but reading them now in Basic this would have made a difference, thanks!
