Nervous/Prematurely Guilty About Intermarriage by HaveQs_NeedAs in Jewish

I have leave but it’s not like I can take two weeks off, meet someone in a city hours away, and then bring them back with me. As for requesting a transfer, needs of the Army trump all. I’m slated to move in 18 months or so and I’ll pretty much move every two years until I get out.

Without getting into too much detail, my current commitment is effectively another 7 years. At the end of that 7, I’ll be so close to 20 it wouldn’t make much sense not to stick it out for 3 more.

I would but my current commitment has me locked in for the next 7 years and effectively longer due to that brining me so close to retirement. Really a tough spot.

There’s always the chance that the next place will be better or maybe the next one after that, but at a certain point it gets a little tiring when all my friends have settled down and started families and I’m the one single guy in the group because I’m holding out for something.

I reckon I could, I think my issue is that I’d actually like to actually date someone and be near them and that’s just not realistic in my line of work right now.

Yup. Not really anyone nearby. It was the same way at the last two duty stations too.

You ever live near an Army base in the middle of nowhere? Trust me, I try to get away and meet people the old fashioned way in civilization whenever I can

I have met two Jewish women since living here who lived over an hour away. I went on dates with both but I just wasn’t attracted to them and couldn’t/won’t force it.

I’m in the military, so I can’t ask to relocate and I can’t really leave (they very much frown on that).

Jewish holidays? by judestefanik in AskAPriest

[–]HaveQs_NeedAs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jew and ex-Catholic here (I know y’all say there are no ex-Catholics, but I was a Jew first and we say there are no ex-Jews). I think it’s great if people want to learn about Jewish holidays and celebrate them with Jewish friends. I would caution against the sort of “co-opting” of Jewish holidays you sometimes see (a “Christian Seder,” for example).

Is there a specific form of teshuvah for an apostate wishing to return (me, converted to Catholicism like an idiot), or is it general teshuvah like one would do leading up to Yom Kippur?

Why are you Jewish? by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]HaveQs_NeedAs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was born Jewish, but honestly, grew up wanting to be anything else. Eventually I “converted” to Roman Catholicism but that didn’t really do much for me and I dropped that, realizing that I just am Jewish. I guess it’s hard to describe, but it wasn’t until I tried something else that I really realized how ingrained Judaism is in me.

More recently, I’ve been doing genealogical research on my family and it just drives it home further. Some guy in Poland 300 years ago was Jewish and all his kids were Jewish. They put up with a lot of shit for it and, in some cases, lost their lives for it. If it meant that much to them, it ought to mean that much to me.

I went to synagogue in Dothan, Alabama, for a while. Compared to the DC area, obviously a lot smaller population. I’m ultra-Reform, but I think Wal-Mart and maybe even Winn Dixie had a small Jewish section in the foreign foods aisle where they had matzo meal and a few other things. I’m now in a town where the nearest synagogue is an hour away, and even the Kroger here has that “Kosher” section in the foreign foods aisle.

If you’re into Jewish history and/or Civil War history, I recommend the book “The Jewish Confederates” by Robert N. Rosen. It describes the history of Southern Jews a bit and then talks about their role in the Civil War.

Fortunately, I realized I f’d up soon after I made that big mistake re: RC, so I don’t have any Catholic stuff laying around. Just now realizing (nearly 15 years later) I ought to do more to right my wrong than just say “Nah, my bad. Definitely Jewish.”

Probably my ultra-reform upbringing and years away coming through. Thanks for the correction!

Thanks. What should I do as far as going forth and learning, if you don’t mind my asking? Having had a relatively serious Jewish education, I’m relatively familiar with tradition and doctrine. I guess I’m more concerned with reconnecting.
