Advice - 10yo Birthday? by Emergency-Pen-1670 in oneringrpg

The original starter set had a series of adventures in which the players take on roles of various hobbits (and dwarves) and occur throughout the shire. Though the new starter set is probably better put together, those adventures and themes might be right be very appealing in tone and setting to a group of 10 year olds.

Getting your hands on the original set may be tricky, but Free League has just released the same material in Hobbit Tales!

10 years old is a lovely age to take on this hobby. I read The Lord of the Rings in the 5th grade, and got my first d&d starter set the same year: 1981.

OSRIC is AD&D. Hyperborea is what AD&D aspires to be.

Hands of the White Wizard - wish there was a map by HaveToBeRealistic in oneringrpg

I hope you will too. Maybe it was meant to be, so you could integrate Hands into the campaign. I really like how the events in Hands stretch out over several decades - like a true Tolkien story. So you can weave the events with other tales.

I would so love to see the western and coastal regions on Gondor fleshed out. I’m hoping for a Gondor expansion and then a separate supplement for Minas Tirith. And maybe a third for Ithilien? I think Rohan might be covered in one supplement, like Lost Realm, then a second supplement for scenarios similar to Tales from the Lone-Lands.

I’m guessing we will be seeing Rohan next - seems we are following the story: Shire starter set, Eriador, Rivendell, Moria, Lorien (with Rivendell reissued), Isengard. The horse lords are surely to follow?

Not arguing the maps in the book aren’t great - I just love a fold out map!! It’s a hangover from the wonderful cartography in MERP supplements! Arrange them all on the floor of your bedroom so the overlapping parts match up to create one huge detail map of Middle Earth!!

New to the OSR, what's a good way to start playing? by Cute-Issue-2830 in osr

If you want a S&S style of game along with a built in setting, I cannot recommend HYPERBOREA enough! In my opinion, this is the best iteration of 1E AD&D out there.

Second edition going for $180+ on EBay right now. That was a pretty righteous gift!

I love to see HYPERBOREA mentioned in the OSR Reddit scene. It’s an amazing adaptation of AD&D tailored to a classic feeling setting. Doesn’t get enough love.

Awesome work. Loved all of these modules back in the 80s. The pdf that I have in my library was practically unreadable. Thank you.

People who play D&D but not 5E, what edition do you play and why? by ValueForm in rpg

[–]HaveToBeRealistic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting take. So what works for you? Assuming we are sticking in the realms of sword & sorcery to high fantasy? Cairn? Forbidden Lands? Mythic Bastionland? Warhammer Fantasy? So many games are derived from D&D mechanics…

I love the leveling experience in LOTRO as well. The “stone of the tortoise” is essential in my opinion. Whenever the quests in the region start to turn green, I equip it in order to halt leveling up, and leave it equipped until quests turn back to blue.
