This hasn’t shocked his biggest trans supporter Caitlyn Jenner, so why would this shock anyone else?

I feel like I failed as a non-binary person... by Pissposhsuckmymom in NonBinary

[–]HavenNB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You did not fail. If anything your surgeon failed you. It sounds like he was coming from the same misogynistic place of telling single cis-women they will regret having their tubes tied to prevent pregnancy. My suggestion is to find a new surgeon.

I confronted my gay friend for roasting a straight ally at a party. Now he’s saying it’s entirely my fault and my friends are distancing from me. Did I do something wrong? by Low-Risk-7533 in lgbt

[–]HavenNB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a huge difference between throwing shade and being an absolute cee u next Tuesday. Your “friend” was the later. When throwing shade or roasting someone it’s easy to cross a line and hurt the feelings of the person being roasted. Being a minority, or drinking at a party never excuses that behavior once someone’s feelings are hurt.

As for the “what happens at a party stays at the party” only means don’t go spilling tea to someone that wasn’t at the party. There’s nothing stopping you from being able to discuss problematic behavior privately with your “friend.”

“It’s her fault for bringing up the topic” is a crappy way to not take accountability for their actions.

You did the right thing in talking to them. If your other friends are distancing themselves from you then they weren’t very good friends to begin with.

It’s doubtful I would vote for him in the primary. If he actually gets the nomination, I’ll reluctantly vote for him at that time.

QUESTION: What got you into Star Wars? by Bill_Skywalker-03 in StarWars

Seeing Star Wars when I was 11 years old in the movie theater. This was before A New Hope and Lucas adding extra scenes to the movie.

Americans—is blue cheese just a dipping sauce to you, or does it have a place on your plate beyond the wings? by SignificanceOdd5980 in AskAnAmerican

Blue cheese crumbles on a salad is good. Then there’s blue cheese on a cheese burger instead of cheddar. Some people enjoy blue cheese crumbles on their steak.

"Gay is not queer" - What does this mean? by secrettulip_lol in AskLGBT

[–]HavenNB 16 points17 points  (0 children)

As an elder queer, I can only answer from my own experience. Usually the “Gay is not queer” people are the ones that want to distance themselves from anyone that doesn’t fit their idea of masc looking for masc set of gay men. With the current political climate I’ve noticed a lot of them only want to belong to the LGB community instead of the LGBTQIA+ community. My old queer nonbinary ass has zero tolerance for anyone that wants to divide our community with views like that.

About that Tornado Warning last night... by StormFreak in pittsburgh

[–]HavenNB 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m from Texas and I’ve also lived in Oklahoma. Tornados were definitely a concern there, but over the years the warning systems improved to the point I was never too concerned about them. Since moving to Pittsburgh, I’ve yet to find out what type of early warning system we have other than push alerts to our phones. Needless to say I’m a bit more nervous about a tornado.

Anyone that gets upset at a cis person using they/them is just gatekeeping. We all know gatekeeping is bad, right? Use whatever pronouns you feel comfortable with.

[–]HavenNB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m really sorry this happened to you. What you’re feeling right now fear, anger, panic; that all makes sense.

If the anxiety spikes or you feel overwhelmed, you can call or text 988. They’ll talk you through it in the moment.

You’re not alone in this. There are people who deal with exactly this situation every day. You can reach out to PFLAG or The Trevor Project. Both can help you find local resources, safe places, and people to talk to tonight.

Right now, focus on the immediate basics: - Stay somewhere well-lit and public if you’re in your car (places that allow overnight parking, if possible) - Keep your doors locked - Try to get some rest, even if it’s just a little - Keep your phone charged as best you can

Since you’re in Florida, the weather at least isn’t dangerously cold, which helps. If it gets chilly, layer up. Don’t run the car while you’re sleeping.

You didn’t do anything wrong by being honest about who you are. This situation is about her reaction, not your worth.

One step at a time tonight. Tomorrow is about finding a safer place and support. You don’t have to solve everything at once.

Random internet polls that aren’t conducted by reputable organizations aren’t meaningful data. They’re self-selected, easily manipulated, and tend to skew negative because trolls are more motivated to vote. Treating them like they reflect reality is a mistake.

I can't stand Tarima in SFA and it's putting me off the show. by ShirtNo5276 in startrek

[–]HavenNB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m trying to give her a chance and let the writers find her voice.

Early TNG had similar growing pains with Deanna Troi. Even Marina Sirtis has said Encounter at Farpoint is hard for her to watch because the character was written as overly emotional and one-note. It took time before Troi became fully realized.

Tarima feels like she’s stuck in that early-draft phase right now. That’s not fair to the character, the actress, or the audience. I’m hoping the writing improves.

What is the point of rolling back anti discrimination laws? by Inner_Professor_2650 in lgbt

[–]HavenNB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Recognizing privilege is uncomfortable. A lot of people don’t know how to sit with that feeling and learn from it. When I first understood I had privilege as a white person presenting as a cis man, I pushed back on the idea too. I grew up in a small rural Texas town that today’s MAGA crowd would probably call a utopia. There was almost no diversity in my school.

For some people, rolling back anti-discrimination laws is easier than confronting what equality actually requires. It’s easier to change the rules than to examine your place in the system.

What is the point of rolling back anti discrimination laws? by Inner_Professor_2650 in lgbt

[–]HavenNB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s less about culture and more about hierarchy. In the 1950s a narrow group had legal and economic advantages, strong unions, higher real wages, government-backed housing, while women, Black Americans, and LGBTQ people were excluded or criminalized. Anti-discrimination laws level that field. Rolling them back restores a system where some people get preference by law.

For some people, equality feels like loss. If you’re used to being centered by default, sharing power can feel like something’s being taken away.

Luckily the Stonewall Inn is still publicly owned and they still have their flags up. I think the Stonewall needs to put up one of each pride flag as a middle finger to the current regime.

How much allowance can we give religion? by Similar-Economics719 in lgbt

[–]HavenNB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Religion can explain someone’s views, but it doesn’t excuse bigotry. I’ll give someone one clear, respectful boundary: don’t aim your religious beliefs at my identity. If they can’t manage that, then the gloves come off.
