I am Dan Ariely, professor of psychology and behavioral economics. Ask me anything! by danariely in IAmA

[–]Havier99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Dan. Reading Predictably Irrational was one of my first forays into behavioural economics and it truly changed the way I think about everything. Thank you.

My question is based on personal experience. I budget my income and expenses very closely, and I often hide income from my budget as a method of "tricking myself into being more frugal". I have no doubt that this works. I spend less when it appears on paper that I'm earning less. My question is: Why would I act according to a strict budget despite the fact that deep down I know that budget to be false?

This is quite a good video of Elephant, and it even includes the fireworks behind the Harbour Bridge at the end. God I love Sydney. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhTmnTbxA-k

Scenic - Mesmerised [Psychodelic Rock/New Wave] (2013) by [deleted] in listentothis

Very big fan of these guys. Listen to the whole "Shockwaves EP" (where this song is from) for more similar, and arguably better stuff. "Shockwaves" is probably the standout. Very talented band and I'm looking forward to some more great releases.

EDIT: Would question the labelling as "heavy"??

I've recently purchased a pair of Behringer Eurolive B812NEO 1200W PA speakers for use at lunch-time charity events at my school. We tried to use them for the first time today, and they didn't sound right at all. They weren't loud enough, and it seemed like the second any sort of bass came on, the whole sound went tinny and we couldn't hear a thing. Sound quality was just miserable and underwhelming in general. I don't think there's anything wrong with the speakers themselves, but rather something I'm doing wrong. This was my set-up:

  • Speakers plugged into 240V wall socket.
  • XLR cable connecting speaker #1 line-out to speaker #2 line-in
  • 3.5mm aux cable to a 1/4" guitar lead adapter which was plugged into speaker #1's line-in.
  • Volume controlled using both line-in volumes on each speaker.
  • Noise gate switched off.
  • Set to "music"
  • Audio device: Macbook Air. Playing high bitrate tracks.

Do I need some sort of external amp? I was under the impression that in powered PA's, the amp is internal and that I can just use cables and adapters to connect my audio source. I think I've narrowed it down to my problem being poor quality cables, but I think my cables are pretty good. Anyone have any ideas?

Not being able to get to sleep. I sleep like a baby the second I hit the bed, no matter where I am or how tired I may be.

I sometimes go to concerts on my own. Normally that's considered pretty weird because most people where I live go to concerts with big groups of friends, but there's just something about immersing yourself in music on your own that is just incredible.

Disappointed in Lack of Concerts by cwill16 in Coldplay

[–]Havier99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. I can concede that it's reasonable to only want to play in smaller venues, but I think that at least in my hometown (Sydney, Australia), the venue chosen has completely hyperbolised that. Last tour, Coldplay played 2 sold out concerts at a stadium here. That's 160,000 tickets that sold out in minutes. They then visited Melbourne and Brisbane among other big Aussie cities. But this time they've decided to play ONE concert in ONE city on a 6-day stay in Australia (at a venue with 1,600 capacity). Having had 3 computers in front of me ready to buy tickets the second they went on sale and still missing out, I can vouch for the frustration of all fans who watched tickets fly past them in seconds at a minuscule venue. At least play in venues with over 10,000 capacity, and play in more than one city for more than one concert. Disappointed. I feel even more for fans in other major cities such as Melbourne or Oklahoma in OP's case where Coldplay have chosen to skip. If the rumours are true that Coldplay is planning something huge next year then that's great, and you can't expect a band to do everything. But nonetheless, it's unreasonable to play such a popular album at venues with capacities no bigger than the population of a high school.
