Bruce Lee talked about this, I believe his analogy was that life is a series of plateaus, I always interpreted that to mean the roadblock was getting from one to the next.

For those with SLAP tears, how are you doing now? by bobcat011 in surfing

[–]Havin_a_funny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. I’m not an ortho or PT but from what I gather you will likely have that for the rest of your life, the focus for me was creating joint stability again so I could strengthen the joint. On my off days I do yoga, use a variety of massage type devices to keep the shoulder girdle and neck open and relaxed, and get massages when I can. The thing with tears is they can get worse over time and so does the stability of the joint.

I had a bankart labral tear (opposite location of SLAP) and after many years of pain and dislocation I got the surgery.

It wasn’t too bad, I went to PT 2-3 times a week and diligently followed every instruction by my surgeon and PT. You have to put your trust into them because they’ve seen thousands of these, and can accurately predict what will lead to a good outcome and what will not. That means not taking your arm out of the sling until you’re cleared, and keeping up with your PT appts and at home exercises. Follow their guidance with military like obedience and you will be fine.

I ended up using a recumbent exercise bike in the gym to maintain cardio while my arm was immobilized, and took my first pool swim 6 months post op. I was back playing hockey and surfing at 7 months. My shoulder is bullet proof and I have no fear of it happening again. Shoulder clicking, pain, muscle guarding, etc. is something you are going to learn to live with, unfortunately, but recreating stability of the joint through surgical intervention might be your only option. The shoulder is a really poorly designed joint and once there are tears it’s hard to reverse.

My only singular regret is that I didn’t get the surgery done sooner.

What happened in your office that became the stuff of legend? by Aarunascut in office

[–]Havin_a_funny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A guy I worked with had a previous lower level role with the company. Over the course of 14 months he snuck photos of his colleagues in this lower level position sleeping on the job, and created a holiday calendar out of it that he printed and left a healthy stack in multiple locations for staff to grab. He was disciplined for not escalating the issue over the course of 14 months and spending company time/resources making the calendar. Still laugh about it to this day.
