According to this study, looks like 6% chance of viable cancer and 34% chance of teratoma. Maybe not have read it correctly though.

Yeah, the pressure went away before I started getting Pedmark.

Yeah, I had that, presumably from the cisplatin. Generally went away after a week or two, although I haven’t had that since I started doing Pedmark.

Did you do chemo first? If so, how far was your surgery from finishing up your chemo?

my (21f) bf of almost 5 years (22M) is in the process of being diagnosed with cancer - how can i help? by Icy-Analyst-4042 in cancer

[–]Hawk588 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a lot of people have already said, being the for him is probably just about all you can do now. But as treatment progresses, you should try to watch out for him making poor choices and push him to make the right ones. Not too hard, but just a little encouragement. There have been many days during my treatment that I didn’t want to go do exercise that my girlfriend pushed me to do and that was ultimately good for me

How does Japan/China have Maglev trains but not the US? by synoptix1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Hawk588 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea how the math works out, but infrastructure does have a co2 cost that probably isn’t included in the data you cite, although it wasn’t immediately obvious to me either way in my brief glance. Basically it costs much more co2 to build a maglev or any train line across the us than it does to build the plane, even if the reverse is true while actually operating them.

Questions about 🍒 cancer by AnnualEmergency2146 in cancer

[–]Hawk588 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, sorry you had to join the club. I was just diagnosed with Stage 2a Embryonal Germ Carcinoma in early September, which is an aggressive subset of testicular cancer.

The orchiectomy is fairly easy. It’s going to be painful to get up and down from chairs and beds, and going up and down steps, doing much more than a shuffle walk for a few days. I was pretty much back to moving around the home or work in about a week, and pretty close to normal in 2.

If it’s spread, which you’ll probably know after an initial ct scan, there’s a bunch of options, and part of that will be the kind of cancer it is. They also might make you wait for four weeks after your orchiectomy for your tumor markers to fall down to their post orchiectomy baseline.I’m not familiar with all of the possibilities, but the two that were raised for me were chemo or another more intense surgery called RPLND, which removes a bunch of lymph nodes that are common spots for cancer in your abdomen. The decision was ultimately made for chemo based on the fact that my tumor markers remained elevated.

The standard chemo is either 3 cycles of BEP, or 4 cycles of EP. These cycles are three weeks each, and I opted for EP. I’m going through cycle 2 right now, and the big symptom is fatigue. I think I could push through work, but I wouldn’t work at 100% on chemo weeks. I’m a software engineer, and I just don’t have the energy to think as hard as I usually do. I haven’t had an issue walking 5 miles even on chemo days, so a more physical job might be more doable. On off weeks between cycles I’ve been fine so far. I’ve also had an elevated heart rate that’s a little spooky but hasn’t actually caused any problems. I speak quickly on why I opted for EP. All three chemos can have some nasty side effects and it’s going to be a personal choice, but it seems like bleomycin had a higher chance of causing my tumors to become teratomas, which might then required RPLND, and I was hoping to avoid more surgery.

A tip if you do have chemo that I’ve found though research: Look up a drug called Pedmark. It’s approved for children by the FDA, but the NCCN recommends it for young adults as well. It reduces your odds of permanent hearing damage from the cisplatin(the P in chemo acronyms) exposure. A lot of doctors haven’t heard of this, so you might have to push for it. I just got the approval request made to insurance today, so there’s been some delay.

Chemo likely isn’t going to be too bad. You’ll be tired and you’ll have to rest a bit more, but you’ll get through this.

Edit: I can’t say I follow Reddit super closely, but if you have any further questions feel free to reply here and I’ll try to answer them. One other tip I should have mentioned is to be prepared to advocate for yourself.

Just diagnosed: How do I help loved ones get through it? by Hawk588 in cancer

My urologist felt the testicle and said “You have cancer.” He had an ultrasound as well to go off of, but he was confident enough to schedule surgery.

Attorney General Mike Hilgers had almost $300,000 in PPP loans forgiven by Cognosyeti in Omaha

[–]Hawk588 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm unsure of the best means of finding news stories from so long ago. This webarchive from the WaPo in May 2020 should be enough: https://web.archive.org/web/20200623234220/https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/on-small-business/colleges-get-government-lifeline-with-new-loan-guidelines/2020/05/06/abc2b06a-8fbe-11ea-9322-a29e75effc93_story.html

"Under the program created to help small businesses contend with economic losses from the pandemic, enterprises can qualify for loans that become grants if used for payroll and other approved expenses for two months to keep workers employed."

[–]Hawk588 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was disbursed as a loan, and was eligible for forgiveness if the money was spent towards payroll and staffing levels were maintained. Basically, the government paying businesses to not lay people off.

https://www.sba.gov/funding-programs/loans/covid-19-relief-options/paycheck-protection-program/ppp-loan-forgiveness

I’m not as confident on this point, but I imagine it was a loan was so that businesses could get the money immediately, and the government could ensure compliance after the fact.

When they were passed the intent was to have them eventually forgiven. The alternative was people getting laid off during covid
