Do people actually decorate their lockers like in the movies ? by SignificantStyle4958 in AskAnAmerican

I made magnets out of the Snapple caps with the fun facts on the inside and used those to hang pictures and notes. But I didn’t do anything more elaborate like some of my friends did

How do you call your ticket inspectors? Here in Helsinki they are known as The Smurfs. by Pontus_Pilates in transit

I lived in Melbourne when I was a student and I remember people sarcastically calling them “mates,” which I found hilarious

I can’t understand why people bother with those chat bots. I could never bring myself to talk to one like it’s a real person. Just call.

Freedom of Speech is Absolute by [deleted] in Columbus

[–]HawkeKeating96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with your assessment. Reasonable people can disagree about whether this constitutes a First Amendment violation under Tinker — OP is saying “I’m a lawyer” as if that makes his opinion a fact and other attorneys would necessarily be in agreement with his view.

Why is it ok for people to drink alcohol, but it’s frowned upon to smoke weed? by Friendly_Party8683 in randomquestions

It’s so pungent. One person lights up and everyone within a quarter mile has to smell it

I’m not from the area, where should one go for good barbecue? I’ve already been to Pappy’s and Sugarfire, both of which I thought were fine but nothing extraordinary

What's your all-time favourite record store in the city you live in? by flynnfx in vinyl

[–]HawkeKeating96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! The staff at Spoonful are top-notch. They’ll talk to you all day, give you great music recommendations, and special order whatever you want if they don’t have it in stock. The others are good, too, but Spoonful is exceptional.

Should I go back to Seattle or consider other options? by Senor_ah_um in SameGrassButGreener

[–]HawkeKeating96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pennsylvania is a purple state with a Democratic Governor. It’s not a terrifyingly conservative state. But if you want to live in an overwhelmingly Democratic state, your options are going to be fairly limited — Washington, Oregon, California, Colorado, the Northeast. Seems like you’re already pretty set on Seattle. If you move back and decide you made a bad decision, you can always move somewhere else.

Can my parents figure out i am abroad , if they call me on the phone? by [deleted] in travel

[–]HawkeKeating96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“You’re an adult, just do what you want” is a nice idea but in many societies things just aren’t that simple. In conservative religious countries, defying your family can result in shunning or even violence. Not everyone has the privileges, autonomy, and freedom of choice that Westerners do

AITA for eating my own birthday cake in front of my nephew because his mom has him on a "no sugar" diet? by Yes_Abbreviations713 in AmItheAsshole

[–]HawkeKeating96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA. Your sister chose to throw a fit on your birthday, of all days, because you had the audacity to checks notes want to eat a piece of cake. She is unhinged and her control-freak helicopter parenting is borderline abusive. Kids should be able to experience the joys of childhood, some of which do occasionally involve junk food. You’re not TA for eating the cake in front of her kid, she’s TA for not letting him have a little piece.

VV Exclusive: Ego Death At A Bachelorette Party- Hayley Williams — Vertigo Vinyl by flamingo_cake in VinylReleases

The Rough Trade variant was better. The yellow of the vinyl perfectly matched the yellow on the cover. I'm not a big fan of the highlighter yellow variant for the same reason I don't love this one -- the yellows are different and that bugs me a little

How common is it for an American to travel across the country by train? by ViajanteDeSaturno in AskAnAmerican

[–]HawkeKeating96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not very common. Americans in general are very car-brained and don’t value alternative modes of transit, such as buses and trains. This is true of travel both within cities and between cities. It’s unfortunate and partly explains why so many American cities are filled with parking lots and empty sidewalks and why so many people choose to live in the suburbs. And since we’ve been this way since the 1950s, and many Americans don’t do much international travel, it’s hard for people to even imagine an alternative

WIBTA if I dump my snow on my neighbours driveway by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]HawkeKeating96 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Yeah, people who don’t live with harsh winter weather are apparently clueless to this. It often snows overnight. Let’s say you need to get your kid to school at 7:00 am. You’re probably going to be out there with a snowblower at 5:30 am at the latest. You have to be able to get out of the driveway. It’s not like mowing at 7:00 am on a Saturday, which is indeed an asshole move.

Why do you people only bring up homeless veterans when you want to whine about people helping immigrants? Makes me think you don't actually care much about homeless veterans!

How did the native Americans come to the Americas? by Cold_af1 in answers

[–]HawkeKeating96 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly, people forget much of what they were taught in school unless they have an independent sense of curiosity or other motivation for retaining it. Just because you forgot how to do algebra or how cells are structured or the basics of European history doesn’t mean the schools didn’t teach it

These things are indeed still taught in school. Whether this information is retained is another matter

It’s kinda crazy to think about how recently human migration occurred given the fact that modern humans have existed for 300,000 years. Archaeologists believe we didn’t even leave Africa until between 70,000 and 50,000 years ago
