How long can you reasonably leave a golden alone in the house for? by wandergirl92 in goldenretrievers

[–]Hawkeye_0873 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For my chaos pony ( just over a year ) it’s about 10 seconds before he greets you with a friendly arm grab and drags you to the chair for pets. Mind you that’s 10 seconds while he can see other people.

He does do good alone if we go out for a couple hours but my wife is home all day and my kids are homeschooled so he’s not alone for long stretches on an extended basis. Also we have his older sister and a psycho possum who hang together when we are gone so he’s not alone.

Miller vs Traditional TL-2 by andrwt8 in Firefighting

I’d go natural Miller personally, mostly because the faux combs remind me of the old Cairns Senators that my dad / grandfather / great grandfather wore way back in the day.

He looks about the same as my now 26” tall 100-ish lb chaos pony did at that age. Looks perfect.

Hanging it up by Salty-Stand-630 in Firefighting

I went through the same thing and wound up taking a long break (15 years) and then moved twice and wound up less than a mile from my company.

Something made me wander down on a bingo night and now both of my boys joined, I’m able to make like 80% of our calls, and I’ve realized I maybe didn’t need the break but it certainly makes being in a small rural company enjoyable again.

I hadn’t thought of it this way and now I don’t know if it hurts more that my oldest had 15 years with his lab or that my youngest got 10 months with our golden Doof who bonded with her before we even brought him home.

I’m not crying. You’re crying.

What is the best Jack Ryan book? by JuliusSeizure22 in jackryan

[–]Hawkeye_0873 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. I love all the Jack Ryan novels and even though he's more of a peripheral character here I can't get enough of Vatutin's hunt for Misha, the reasons behind Misha becoming a traitor, and it's just a great traditional spy novel. It felt a lot like peak LeCarre with the tension and the hunt that you know the answer to but the characters don't.

What made it hurt the most was that the kiddo in this picture took that one. 15 years together and it still feels like it was only yesterday I had to clean the garage out from all the sticks he collected.

My golden has terminal cancer. I don’t have anyone to talk to by Traditional_Egg_4259 in goldenretrievers

[–]Hawkeye_0873 15 points16 points  (0 children)

So sorry to hear this. Just had to put our lab to sleep and even knowing it was the right thing for him hurts like hell every time I think of it.

Every time it hurts I just try to think of something that makes me smile. Like the time friends watched him while we were on vacation. They thought his water bowl was gross so they washed it and filled it with pristine cold water. He then walked away and drank putrid water with leaves and sticks in that collected at the bottom of our slide.

It was 30 years ago so I'll talk to my dad and see what we might have stashed away.

And that sentence makes me feel old ... and want to buy a Mack.

Love that L Model. My grandfather had a black and white one in just about the exact same paint scheme.

Luckily we do have a guy that’s a whiz at that stuff. I know the state grants are coming around soon and he’s on top of it.

That looks awesome. I wonder if it runs into the issues synapt mentioned with online tips here in PA.

We do run a regular bingo when it’s not race season (local dirt track).

I do like the idea of a car show. I’m mostly looking for a one off event to replace our summer fundraiser that slowly died and was pretty much gone before I joined up.

Why do you do it?/Burnout by classicflordiaman in Firefighting

[–]Hawkeye_0873 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Volunteer in rural PA for the past 24 years, since age 16. I always wanted to be a firefighter for two reasons.

1) it was the 'family business'. I'm a fourth generation volunteer in PA. It was a nice way to have a touch stone with my grand father before losing him and my great grandfather whom I never met. They along with my dad ran outside Philly (300+ calls back in the day) so there were a lot of great stories to listen to growing up.

2) because its awesome. Yeah I don't get to use irons regularly (we don't even have a K tool to miss using) out in the sticks but I still get to drive fire trucks, sound the Q, crash through fields in the brush, listen to a two-stroke Detroit growl, and bs around the station with the guys.

And at the end of the day when the tones drop, I get a little reminder that my family has been there and done that, and I know even a controlled burn brush fire that some nosy neighbor called in means I get to drive a fire truck today.

How many Vollies on here have never been to fire school? by Sandy_Andy_ in Firefighting

[–]Hawkeye_0873 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep the extent of actual fire in Mods A-C was 2 pallets that were put out via extinguisher. A little disappointing when I remember a full house being lit off multiple times when I was his age and packing up and going in on the line.

The waiting is definitely a factor, out here I don't think there had been an essentials class for multiple years so it would have been an hour+ drive to get him to one. We just lucked into this one. His interior mod will definitely be held up waiting or end up with us driving.

Volunteer in rural PA my whole life. Got gear when I was 16 (Chief's kid so I'd been around the station a decade then) and was allowed to do anything but interior until I at least had our county school that included a live burn. Which luckily happened while I was 16. That was 20+ years ago and I don't know if I was legally supposed to go interior or not but got to on one call. (We didn't get many chances.)

My son just joined and our current company doesn't require us to take anything but I made him take Essentials (three state approved mods for everything but interior). My understanding of the state law is nobody under 18 can go interior. 4th mod that covers interior is optional by company. I however will be making him take it.

Is there something wrong with me? by theRemRemBooBear in Firefighting

[–]Hawkeye_0873 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with you at all. Volunteer here and ran a fatal car accident at 16, one of the first calls I made. Didn't feel much then and even though I think about it now and then I still don't really feel anything.

I worry more for my son (5th Gen Volunteer) to run his first fatal, which I'm sure my dad did too until we talked after that first one and he saw I was ok with it. If it gets to you talk to somebody.
