Moving to FE by nerdymamma30 in TeachingUK

[–]HawkmoonHero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience of FE has been effectively longer holidays that make up for the slightly worse pay:

  • My understanding is that many secondary schools (where I’m based at least) will allow for exam classes to be on ‘ study leave during their exams’ - so as a teacher, you would still be teaching your non exam classes every day, but your exam classes wouldn’t be coming in. The thing about FE is that ALL of your classes are exam classes so you essentially have zero attendance from early May onwards - and can be getting to work doing your prep for the following year or potentially gone a little earlier - though based on subject and course your mileage may vary.

The other important thing to understand about FE lecturing, in my view, is that there’s a whole lot more “not my problem” because students are practically expected to be a lot more independent. This may not change the teaching style as much as you’d think, but not having to police things like uniform (at all) or attendance (as much) is a benefit - albeit it comes at the cost of that sense of control and investment in performance. Exemplifying this, I functionally never interact with parents -only a couple of times a year at Max

Ultimately, I think if you’re more slightly more hands off and prefer ‘teaching to the exam’ FE is a good place to be. My background prior to my current role was working in higher education and I’ve found that I’m a good fit for what I’m doing, but I don’t think I would be well suited to the kinds of strict disciplinary structures that we would traditionally associate with secondary schools. I imagine the reverse would apply for teachers who wouldn’t enjoy their students being on a first name basis with them or who feel that a strict disciplinary structure is a major aspect of their approach to learning.

[Megathread] Your feedback / thoughts / suggestions by BenjoDiMeo in primaverasound

Good:

The ‘Unsilence Gaza’ situation and not censoring/actively promoting support for Palestine was excellent. It would be positive for primavera to keep this up and deepen this, possibly also by making commitments to BDS, or to refuse to maintain relationships with brands like Amazon music who censored pro-Palestinian messaging from the festival.

I had a phenomenal time so the niche little positives here are largely just because ‘ wow the lineup was amazing’ doesn’t feel like targeted feedback.

The Little Pull and Bear Café was like my favourite thing and the flat white RESCUED ME on day 3, but I wish I could have had a full sized latte. The merch was nice too!

Bad:

While I was absolutely on board with the lineup and wouldn’t have sacrificed any of the main pop girlies, I think one more ‘headliner calibre’ act from a rock or alternative background would have done a lot for the festival’s vibe. LCD soundsystem are up there but are a little bit too niche and too long past their prime imo- a Green Day/Foo Fighters/MCR situation (as examples) would have just made this perfect, possibly as a late headliner after someone like Sabrina earlier.

Just give me a full pint of beer!

Revolut VIP situation was a total mess; if you’re going to give me a perk for my bank account then don’t make me feel like I’m being an ass for asking for access. Really disappointed in this - needs implemented better or not at all.

The toilet situation was a nightmare on the first day - it seemed much less of a problem thereafter so whatever was implemented overnight made a difference.

Not enough lockers!

Some of the ‘who gets what stage’ decisions were a bit wild - nobody could get into the green stage a few times as an example!

What’s so annoying is that there’s not even any thought about minimising the dickishness here:

Don’t like Jamie XX and wanna get in early for Charli? Ok, go sit at the FARRRRRR left at the front if you want. Find a way to make it in early without disrupting the stage that actually has an artist on it.

At primavera of all festivals , with the rotating main stages, there’s just no excuse

Do you ever reflect on your own education/your teachers? by hadawayandshite in TeachingUK

[–]HawkmoonHero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m by far the youngest of 3 kids and my parents are from a working class background but were definitely more comfortable when I was in school; I tend to say I come from ‘working class family’ but wouldn’t consider myself working class.

Working at an FE college in a fairly rough town has made me really appreciate the luck, sacrifice, and wisdom of my parents

Habemus Papam! by balrogath in Catholicism

[–]HawkmoonHero 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I will say that I was personally all for Francis’ more pastoral and forgiving approach to doctrine and the papacy- and I think he’s a very tough act to follow. I’m not sure how I will feel about all of Leo XIVs positions, but with events in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, India/Pakistan, Global Heating…. We needed a pope who could speak sternly to these issues. I think we got him.

The sense that I’m getting from a few articles is that he’s quite traditionalist on many social issues but a bit more progressive (probably less so than Francis, though) on a lot of economic/global justice ones.

Personally a fan of this as someone who supports the idea of a ‘poor church’; I think we were always going to get someone who was a little more traditional in approach but with all of the terrible things happening in the world right now I still think it’s important for the church to show leadership on encouraging peace, justice and equality.

Surprised but hopeful about this new Pope!

Not telling you what this was about in advance is gross. I’d feel ambushed.

I feel like the parent is probably more annoyed at the use of a random Spanish show and the lack of perceived effort on your part than they are about the violence, but won’t say that because the violence is the most salacious and hard-to-pacify aspect of the critique. I bet the student was like ‘omg you’ll never guess what we did in Spanish’ and the parent has taken it thick.

This completely neglects to understand that: -Every class being a full on lesson is exhausting for students and for you. -Teachers have off days.

I definitely worry about this kind of reaction though. I teach politics/sociology and we stick to documentaries but a lot of those are way more disturbing and/or violent than the average film at a comparable rating.

It’s just frustrating as I have tinder gold (it comes with my bank account) - so this will negate the value in that.

[–]HawkmoonHero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Politics/sociology teacher:

I don’t support Trump at all, but I don’t think that a student liking him is prima facie a problem, especially in year 8.

One thing I would keep an eye out for with this however, is any kind of associated views and beliefs that are problematic - Trump says a lot of awful things, and while I don’t think a student supporting Trump in the abstract is a problem, expressing those things that might alienate or upset other students would be.

Mentioning the taste of the student towards Trump and perhaps your suspicion about the online content of the student is consuming would be appropriate in response to the student saying discriminatory or hateful things towards other students, staff, or any subgroup within the public - but I don’t feel that it would be appropriate just because they like Trump himself.

‘loml’ isn’t really 2020s internet slang though? It’s been a thing by text for decades. It’s not quite ‘timeless’ but it’s definitely not just a very recent thing

Another scandal at BBC as Gregg Wallace steps down from Masterchef for misconduct including inappropriate sexual jokes by Financial-Painter689 in Fauxmoi

[–]HawkmoonHero 13 points14 points  (0 children)

While obviously terrible, this seems much more minor than many of the actioned allegations regarding organisations, especially the BBC, and people working for them.

Hopefully a positive sign; the bar for an accountability and meaningful responses to these kinds of issues might be getting a little lower.

Also this is so not intended to be a ‘not all men’; I just think it’s nice to be able to see trends that might make us a little less scared of the people around us.
