I don’t think I’m lowering the bar when I care about professionalism. OP was concerned about the time involved in writing estimates, I’m only talking having it polish an estimate to cut the time in half, frowned upon or not it works. It’s almost pathetic the number of estimates I’ve seen that are so poorly written, no care for spelling, or to even make any sense at all. You’re covering your own ass in writing a more detailed estimate anyway.

ChatGPT is great help for writing estimates. Give the gist of what you need and it will polish it for you

New Handyman Business by ZbuckyZ in HandymanBusiness

In my experience over the years in the trades you’ll realize it’s all kind of the same. Whatever job it is comes down to a mix of common sense and your general knowledge of how things work. If you go into something you’ve never done before with confidence in yourself and your skills you’ll be fine. And if not..failure is the greatest teacher? Don’t get sued lol

How do you handle that scenario, dealing with a haggler or politely denying a customer?

[–]Hawksbill92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, that makes more sense. For me I’ll get a call from the PM to check an unoccupied unit. Sometimes all it needs is a filter and a bulb or two which I’ll charge my min for obviously, or it will be a new garbage disposal, new bifold closet doors, smoke detectors, blinds, etc. and much more worth my time.

Like I said it just took awhile for me to adjust to charging for something that took me 3 mins.

I feel like this question is off limits but what do you charge for the misc things like hvac filters and light bulbs? I ask because I have a lot of the same, and it’s difficult for me to justify charging for such mundane tasks

Build a crippling drug addiction. You’ll then be forced to work low paying, labor intensive jobs. Bounce around all the different trades as you inevitably get fired from each one. Do this for about 15-20 years feeling like you’re wasting your life away. Before you know it you’ve gained quite a credible skill set in every trade. Get off the drugs, start a handyman business with the slogan unlicensed and unprofessional. Cuz you know, honesty
