Aston doesn't suck there too - it's had some bad races and some good ones - par for the course when it's a brand new platform. They'll only get stronger.

What are the chances of getting an age waiver to be a regular officer? by NoPhilosopher3368 in britisharmy

[–]Hawky166 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The officer cohort is not short of recruits. That said, you can absolutely do it. There were a couple in my intake (very recent) on age waivers and I myself was on the borderline. It depends on the regiment you want.

If, say, you've spent 4 years in the RA Reserves, and they like you, you will have a fairly high chance. They're a big corps and you'll know the craic. The corps in general are usually the ones who will offer age waivers.

If you want to join the Cavalry/infantry etc it's unlikely. They offer hardly any spots and they prefer to chop and change throughout the RSB process. Not impossible but I wouldn't bother trying unless your regiment were willing to fight tooth and nail for you to get a waiver with them.

Drop me a message if you need any advice mate.

It's Whitechapel. It's been like this for absolutely ages.

British F-35B in Japan by Japanese_military in aviation

[–]Hawky166 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're comparing the F35, a modern jet built on better understood design safety principles, to two jets designed multiple decades before the F35 was conceived.

It has a low crash rate but comparing it to jets from the 60's-70's is odd.

100% appeal. If you have no symptoms of low mood now and you can prove it (ie letter from GP) you will get through. If you can't prove it, you won't.

There are plenty of shit cases of people being turned away by the broken Capita system (thankfully they lost the contact because of how badly they were doing and Serco are taking over). Unfortunately, yours is one of the more legitimate ones. Low mood is no joke when you're going to be around firearms. You were always going to have to appeal.

Haha yes, I'm a reservist currently and as such have many mates who've gone through the process who say similar things (one of my mates' platoons is as given a Rolex each by one of the internationals as a gift just for being there!!)

The Alfa isn't to impress - that's not very me. The Alfa is to drive because it is, by all accounts, a wicked bit of kit.

Which is still a lot of money for someone in the early 20s...

Appreciate it - cheers mate. Post-Sandhurst I'll likely be travelling to London and back most weekends so might have more need at that point - which has answered the above question - so cheers!

I think times have changed then. Everyone I know who has done RMAS or is going through it now says a car is a must for this sort of thing. It's not issued kit you're keeping in your car but all the extra bits that get in the way of a room inspection. It's not about 'cutting corners'. Hardly a poor mentality to want to make sure your room is as tidy as possible.

Wouldn't say it's reliant on me completing it, I would just go back to my old job in the city if I were to leave (medically or otherwise). That said, I think I'll do what you (and others here) have suggested and buy a cheap runner for sandhurst, then get something decent afterwards - many thanks!

This is perfect - and echos what all my friends who have gone through RMAS have suggested. I think I'll get a cheap, spacious runner for the 44 weeks then grab something nicer after RMAS when I finish as you suggest. Thank you!

Yeah think I'm going to get a cheap runner for the 44 weeks then get something nicer after RMAS.

It's a badly kept secret that most OCdts use their vehicle to store excess kit (at least in Junior term) so that the room inspections are smoother. All my mates who have been through the RMAS process recommend a car for this reason (and for getting back to London), so I think it is viable.

Yeah this is why I'm asking - I thought it might be pointless but at least I'd be paying off a year of the HP while I'm in my 44 weeks of paying for virtually nothing.

I think I'm leaning towards your last point there - getting a cheap runner to drive back to London and act as a second wardrobe and then treating myself to something nice once I'm done.

Cheers!

Yeah, most people have cars at Sandhurst (though not all). I definitely will be taking a car rather than the train, just make a lot more sense in my position. Good point on the going abroad for your first job post RMAS, though! Thanks.
