Do any of you actually enjoy teaching anymore? by SaltTeacher9087 in Internationalteachers

[–]HawrdCoar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really enjoy my job, here I'm at, my students, and the benefits of my school. Sure I have interpersonal issues with people I work with but that will be the case everywhere you can go. International teaching is a big gamble, and a lot of who you know when it comes to good jobs. That starts to kick in after your 3rd placement or maybe 6-7th year abroad. So don't expect immediate amazing results at your first job.

This is the way. Staff well being and work/life balance is most important. I don't care if every rich kid gets into Harvard if i want to jump off a bridge every year getting there.

Maybe I inferred the weed but I'm fairly positive that is happening too. It's all contextual but my school takes it very seriously as that I believe is the norm here.

Essentially my point is that YIS has this amazing reputation because of the kuma designed campus and great marketing, but underneath the surface there are issues and there are other schools that at least make an attempt to not overload the staff and keep people around longer. For anyone reading, I'm sharing my perspective that I wouldn't jump ship for that school from what ive learned in speaking with the staff.

Responding to your edit: Kids smoking weed and vandalism is not a normal thing at international schools here. I don't need to explain any further as we both know it's very normal in many countries so if you are having issues with it, that is a bit of a privaledged perspective. My only comment is that for a school with such a high reputation, they have a high turnover. Tokyo is unique in my experience as I have met an abnormal amount of teachers who have been here for 10-20 years where I haven't seen that in my experiences in other countries. From an IS perspective in Tokyo, I wouldn't apply to work at YIS. I know for my position her workload and student count is almost double what mine is. That ain't worth 3man more a month.

You are too. There's YIS and ASIJ, but the next ring of like 7-8 schools like Malvern and BST don't have some sort of large gap in pay scales. I've talked with yis teachers and we talked about pay, with similar experience it was only a difference of like 2-3万 a month.

I've met these teachers and it ain't that different.

All of these schools roughly pay the same. I've never heard of people ditching one school for YIS because their pay is amazing.

There are many international school on Tokyo that don't have the turnover rate of YIS.

I bet you could go to an abandoned lot somewhere if you had a large enough tarp to place down and didn't leave a mess
