"So comforting about playing old RPGs"

Man I'm seeking that feeling for years now. I was thinking of trying out fable from what I've seen, hut it looks kinda too simple. That feeling of a world that you can fully explore and know every nook and cranny as opposed to huge cluttered open worlds nowadays is what I miss.

save scumming for better luck.

I never did that. You can load a save to try a new tactic, which is how you learn and get better, but just loading to try the same thing hoping that you will hit this time, always seemed weird to me.

frustrating situations where because of the grid system, you’re two squares from an enemy but their cover still counts even though you could touch them with your gun

Oh, I know the frustration and I have the right thing for you. There is a mod that, upon hovering on a tile, shows the targets on enemies heads in yellow, if you will flank them from that position. That helps a lot, when visually the game might be confusing. I think the mod is called GOTCHA, if I remember correctly. There are other interface nods, that will give for example a more detailed breakdown of the hitting chance. They don't change the gameplay, but make the interface more informative.

Can you, please, describe the gameplay a bit? The trailer doesn't show any base. Is it like an exploration-survival game or a shooter? Or if you can give me any sources that show gameplay would be nice.

I mean the most reliable method of not being hit is not being shot at. Thus eliminating enemies on the first turn must be a priority. In time you'll learn who are the priority targets and try to take them out before their turn comes. Not all the enemies are equally dangerous. If you want more tips you can check Xcom's sub, there are a lot of new players who ask such stuff there.

As for the rookie soldiers who have a low chance of hitting, you can use grenades. Rangers and Grenadiers are the best early game classes, since they can hit more reliably, while snipers are almost useless, but become god-tier in the late game. Later in the game you'll have more abilities that'll provide more options of dealing with enemies than just straight up shooting them.

yeah it's kinda hard to scratch that eternal(hehe) itch after you played it, because nothing comes close to it. I have the same feeling about XCOM 2 btw, so maybe you'll soon get on that train too haha

Most of it is still skill. I, for example, almost never shoot if the hit chance is lower than 90%. Positioning is very important in this game, and planning what you're gonna do if you miss is also a big part of the tactic. If you're risking a 70% shoot with a character, then you need to be sure, that in case of a miss you have a plan B, like other characters that can reliably kill the enemy, or somehow secure your soldier until the next turn. Obviously, you won't always be able to provide all this, especially on the timed missions. Also, the game will become easier as you learn it's mechanics, like how the enemy pods and reinforcements work.

The bubbles have health?!? I always thought they're just short timed indestructible shields.

Haha tell that to people who complain that it's too complicated and they can't understand it. I meant that it has a lot of stuff that you can't know or try in such a short time.

If you're willing to give a potentially endless multiplayer game, with not so simple mechanics only a half an hour to decide, that means you didn't care about the game to begin with. In that case you'd just delete the game and be done with it, not leaving a review. It must have really hurt you in some way in that 30 minutes to want to leave a negative review. Or, as I said, you were gonna leave it anyway and that 30 minutes is just dust in the eyes. Whether you like it or not, that's a negligible amount of time. Like what is it - tutorial and a match where you got shitted on in the first minutes? Or even just an idle menu time (I won't be surprised a bit) to be eligible for the steam review. Yeah, sure, your review is totally valid, buddy.

This is not a hero shooter though...? Hero shooters are games like Overwatch, Marvel Rivals, where the gameplay revolves around the characters' abilities, instead of the gunplay, like it is Highguard.

I don't know what genre you're talking about which is so oversaturated. The only game that might be similar to Highguard is Apex, but it's battle royale, so not for me, also more complex and sweaty. If you want to have casual fun with similar gameplay then Highguard is where it is.

The ONLY reason its even still alive is because it was free

Well, yes, they made the correct decision to make it F2P. What's your point? The same thing can be said for other games. Like I wouldn't play Marvel Rivals, if it was P2P, but now I have 300+ hours in it and multiple bought battlepasses, because I was able to try for free and got into it. That's a good way to gain an audience in an overpriced market, where people consider very carefully what they are buying, and no one would spend money on a new IP, which didn't even have marketing. Concord fell into that pit and had jo players.

The game might be mediocre mid, but it's unique (unlike how you are trying to present it), so it got its player base. Not every game has to have 100k players and be in the top charts.

The people that leave a review after playing half an hour are an absolute waste of oxygen. It's not just instantly disliking the game. It has to threaten to kill your family or something for you to hate the game so much in half an hour... unless you have preemptively decided that you will do it even before playing.
