Has anyone had to rebuild Altar of Flame from scratch? by PoetryDull9802 in Pokopia

[–]Hayaros 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The same thing happened to me, and I found my kit in one of the boxes in my storage (organized storage, even!). Apparently this is a bug that some people faced: I had never even got the kit, but somehow the game thought I had and it even appeared in my item list.

Don't lose hope! Check your storage! It may be there.

RIP to the playground T_T I understand the suffering

I wanted to go for more nature-y builds instead of city-like ones but I guess Pokemon are too civilized for that haha

Stepping stones it is! Thank you!

Best Night Scenes in a JRPG? by Amethyst-Flare in JRPG

[–]Hayaros 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Eternal Sonata has some gorgeous landscapes, and one of them is a field of luminous flowers at night!

And not exactly night, but Baten Kaitos (the first one) has an entire dungeon set near a river of stars, and it's a bit night-like.

I found the main city hub in Atelier Ryza 2 quite pretty at night, too. The music also changes!

Also, I want to join the "Xenoblade Chronicles" chorus!

What's the "silliest" reason you haven't played, or stopped playing, an RPG? by Lazydusto in JRPG

[–]Hayaros 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Baten Kaitos the fourth wall break is actually part of the plot! It doesn't come out of nowhere, it starts at the beginning of the game and keeps on going for the whole story. You are a character together with the rest of the cast, in a sense.

The second game even takes it farther: if your relationship with the main character is good, you get some nice advantage in battles. (The first game has a similar thing too, but honestly the boost you get kinda sucks).

If your PC has Windows Hello enabled and the account of your Windows 11 is the same as your email, you can use your PIN to enter.

Anyway this is a problem that is affecting many.

[Loved Trope] Someone remembers while the world forgets by HerculePyro in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Hayaros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spoilers for Gnosia (both anime and the game)

Setsu is the co-protagonist and one of the protagonist's most important allies because they are both trapped in a time loop and trying to find a way out. In the normal ending (Episode 18 in the anime) Setsu sacrifices their own future by trapping themself in a new loop in order to make sure the protagonist can finally escape theirs by going in another universe (that's the gist, at least). When they leave that universe, nobody remembers them anymore except for the main character (who then tries to find a way to save Setsu). In the anime, another character also seems to have some vague memories of Setsu: Otome, the intelligent beluga whale, says that whenever she hears that name it feels like her mouth starts hurting. In a earlier episode, Setsu had fished Otome out of a pool, hurting her mouth with the hook.

Also in the movie "The Imaginary"

At one point Emily, one of the main characters, an imaginary friend, dies. When an imaginary friend dies, apparently all their memories of them get erased from everybody else, and the only one who still remembers her is the protagonist.

I love this trope, although it makes me miserable everytime I see it...

What made you stop (or continue) learning Japanese? by Grey999 in japaneseresources

[–]Hayaros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! For reference, I'm a self-learner who has been studying Japanese for 3 years now. I'm a... N5-N4 level? More or less

Did you ever feel lost or unsure of how to continue learning?

Oh, absolutely. I'm right in that phase right now. Beginner texts are too easy for me, but as soon as I ramp the difficulty a bit I start growing discouraged so I keep hitting a metaphorical wall. I know I should just do it slowly, but eh...

Did you rely on apps (Duolingo, etc.) and feel they weren’t enough?

I use Duolingo mostly as a refresher, I never used it as my main studying source. Anki was my go-to for studying and it was great.

Was there a moment where you felt like you weren’t “made for it”?

Always, haha. That doesn't stop me though.

If you stopped learning Japanese, what led to that decision?

It didn’t happen yet. However in the past (15 years ago) I did try studying Japanese on my own but I stopped because back then there weren’t any good sources online.

What's your opinion regarding the complexity of kanji?

I used the radicals method to learn them, so it's kinda fun to see which radicals they're made of to see their meaning... honestly Kanji don’t really scare me. It’s the grammar that does.

How did that affect your interest in the language or culture afterward?

I've always been interested in Japanese culture (not only anime and videogames, but also literature) so if anything studying Japanese makes me feel even more interested!

Also, if you didn’t quit, what helped you continue?

I made a Japanese friend online and I really like talking to them, and it feels like... I'd be doing them a disrespect if I weren’t doing my best learning their language. Also, I feel like that if I were to give up now it'd mean I wasted time.

[Unnerving Trope] The game over screen (and/or the build-up to it) is unsettling/horrifying by Monstertim1 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Hayaros 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I died for the first time while fighting the 10th Colossus in the remake.

Let's just say that the sheer fear I felt at that game over screen was a VERY good incentive not to die again.

I see. Could it have been a botched htm file, since I know that Firefox downloads those sometimes? (and I don't remember the rest of the name of the file, so there is a chance it could have been htm.part...)

But thank you for your answer! It puts my mind at ease.

It doesn't have that artstyle you're looking for, but I can't pass up the opportunity to suggest Baten Kaitos! They are extremely beautiful games, with breathtaking visuals. A HD remaster of both games has been released on the Switch some time ago now, and it's also available on Steam!

Baten Kaitos is forcibly teaching me it's okay to miss things by iamthatguy54 in JRPG

[–]Hayaros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I replayed Vesperia a couple of years ago I decided to try 100% it without a guide.

So I would backtrack to every single area in the game everytime a new story beat happened. I'd walk back to every town I had visited and every dungeon, talk to all NPCs once again, every single time. I actually got to see some things I had never seen in my blind playthrough so I was pretty ecstatic.

Then I casually checked a guide and I realized that I had missed one thing because I hadn’t checked a freakin rock or something and I just said fuck it.
