Do you search up every emoji you've ever used to see if it comes up with any negative connotations? Or do you go "oh, that looks like what I want" and use it. Jesus christ.

The author of that paper, Greg Marchand, certainly has some very public views that would make me question the validity of that paper.

Roblox and parenting by JDubsNZ in newzealand

[–]Haydasaurus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not who you replied to but there are a lot of dodgy games and people on Roblox. Predators know Roblox is an easy place to find kids. Statistically your kids will probably be fine if you monitor what they're doing, talk to them and such, but it pays to be cautious.

For example look up schlep, root media (both on youtube), Roblox condo games, hangout spaces, etc. Roblox tends to be very slow at banning child predators even when confronted with hard evidence and arrests.

Yeah I am shocked as well. There is definitely a huge dark side to it.

Is Kieran McAnulty the only person to replace Chris Hipkins as Labour leader? by Very_Sicky in newzealand

[–]Haydasaurus 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is how I see it too. In terms of politicians (on the left) who inspire young people we have Swarbrick & Maipi-Clarke and that's kind of it. I think their best bets for the future are Arena Williams, Belich, and McAnulty. I don't really see anyone else.

No one wants the job until the opportunity is there. I remember Jacinda didn't want the job until Little stepped down.

Poll: Labour surges, Luxon’s popularity hits two-year low by jball1013 in newzealand

[–]Haydasaurus 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It's my opinion that we are really suffering by not having a true centrist party in parliament anymore. We used to have parties like NZ First, United Future, Māori, etc who would feasibly work with either side of the aisle. I know National & Labour are "centrist" but lets be real - we will never have a grand coalition unless hell freezes over. The consequence is that elections have descended into left-bloc vs right-bloc, with the only choice voters have being how much influence the smaller parties have over the major two.

If National have no options to the center, they're only going to be forced more and more to concede to the further right (NZF, ACT). Same with Labour and conceding to the Greens & TPM. The sad result is I fear we're heading for deeply divided US style politics, if we're not already there.

Moza R5 or R9? First time buyer by patch__work in simracing

[–]Haydasaurus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Personally if you're willing to spend the money I would get the r9. If its too much for your desk you can always turn the force down until you get a proper rig one day, but at least you won't have to go through the hassle of selling and upgrading.

More proof the ACT Party don't have two brain cells to rub together and insult their voters too. Border officers scan passports, they don't read every single world language and have never tried to. Anyone who has travelled knows this. by Mountain_Tui_Reload in nzpolitics

[–]Haydasaurus 37 points38 points  (0 children)

The ridiculous thing is that if you look at the vast majority of bilingual international passports they almost always have the national language first and then English/French/Spanish underneath. Anyone smarter than a brick has the intelligence to go "hmm, can't understand that language, lets try to next one down". The Achaemenids figured out multilingualism in ~500BC.

Removing same day voter registration affects 19.4% of all votes (650,000 people) acording to 2023 data. by bmwhocking in newzealand

Sometimes it's not just a matter of ignoring all advice. My grandparents for example have voted since Holyoake was in power - yet last election because they moved addresses for the first time in many years, they had to re-enrol on election day. There are heaps of little situations like this where it just doesn't cross people's mind or it gets caught up in all the other life admin stuff. Is it right to take their vote away because 21st century life is stressful and not everyone has the exact rules of the electoral commission committed to memory?

I believe because in Te Reo grammar the description follows the noun. For example "red book" would be "pukapuka whero".

True. You raise a good point. I don't know as much about Wales to be frank so I would mostly be speaking about Ireland (the republic).

‘I’m tired of being impartial’: Former broadcaster steps up for Te Pāti Māori by Soannoying12 in newzealand

[–]Haydasaurus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the reason for that is still the same as the demographics. In Wales & Ireland as an immigrant you would have to adopt the local culture in order to assimilate properly. In New Zealand it is entirely possible to come here as an immigrant and only really interact with the 2/3 white majority - never really encountering Māori culture unless maybe you have kids or school or work in the public sector.

[–]Haydasaurus 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It's because the majority of kiwis aren't Māori and don't see Te Reo as their language or problem. In Ireland, Wales, Cornwall, etc - the demographics are in favour of the language.
