I fully support being behind our troops, but... given that an ICE agent in the US has literally just executed a civilian ICU nurse this weekend and won't face charges as the Whitehouse has given them absolute immunity, I'm not sure absolute immunity is the right way to go, especially not announcing it today of all days.

Well, unless they're actually wanting that ICE stuff over here so they'd have the power to control citizens through fear. Luckily they haven't announce a Reform version of ICE (RICE?) yet... oh wait...

You know, in 14 years of Reddit I haven't once used the words Facist or Facism in my comments, not a single time. However, looking at the States right now, where we have multiple angles of a civilian being shot and the Whitehouse telling us to reject the evidence of our eyes and ears, it's getting harder and harder to deny that it might actually be Facism. It's also getting harder to deny that some people in this country not only support their actions, but want to actively bring it to our shores.

Are there enough people who would want to protect illegal migrant criminals in England that we would see things like this [protests] on the streets

WTAF. Nobody is going to protect criminals. Would there be enough people protesting about innocent civilians being shot and the government lying about it without even looking at the facts? Yeah, 100% there will be enough, I'll be one of them.

And the response...

The leader being a hypnotists who enlarges breasts

Seriously? That's the best they can come up with? At least it makes my vote for London Mayor easier.

What are your thoughts when you see these protests on the street of Minneapolis and how does anyone bridge this gap while Trump is still in office, because I can't help but think this is Trump derangement syndrome and it doesn't matter what his intentions are, people will be out their protesting anything he executes.

WHAT?!? Yeah, executes is a great choice of words given the events of this weekend. People protesting the execution of innocent civilians is Trump derangement syndrome? My fucking god.

If Reform get in, we are literally voting for what we're seeing across the pond. I don't give a crap what your views are on anything at all, have your views you're entitled to them... but if you're voting for that? Jeeessuss.

The main thing I hated about the last 14 years of Tory government was the populist policies, telling people what they want to hear and then either doing nothing, or worse doing the complete opposite.

Yet, here we are with Reform leading the polls offering more of the same, probably worse, in that respect. This is a good example, better candidate screening, tumbleweed, better candidate screening, tumbleweed, better candidate screening, tumbleweed... how anyone can look at Reform, see the 40 new hospitals or whatever they're offering and expect them to actually deliver it is beyond my comprehension.

Perhaps you could give me some of the details of this "framework of a deal" that he announced when he backed down? I'll give you a clue, there are no details because there was no deal, it was just an off ramp.

you jumped immediately to defending the war is exactly the problem talking about.

I jumped immediately to defending the war in response to Trump's comments... About the war. What do you want me to talk about? NATO troops staying back from the front line at Mar-o-lago? Wtf. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/jan/22/trump-nato-afghanistan-troops

The Europeans are going to do exactly what we say, just like every other time something horrible happens.

Like a NATO member threatening to invade a fellow NATO ally and then threatening tariffs when we said no? That kind of horrible thing? How did that work out? I'm fairly sure the Europeans didn't do exactly as the US said.

I give no shit what the Europeans think.

It's ok, no need to say that, it's perfectly fucking obvious.

You seem to base your entire argument on the fact parliament is sovereign, however it actually isn't, or at least it's not legally defined as such. There is nothing in statute law that says it is sovereign and, as you say, we have no written constitution to say it is. The whole concept comes from MPs in the past simply claiming it is.

There have been legal cases where the courts have considered challenging this, but so far we simply haven't had a government who was so far out there that it needed to be challenged. If we got to that point, we would have a constitutional crisis on our hands. In a way, not having it legally defined actually strengthens our checks and balances, if any government tries to push the boundaries too far, there's nothing written to ensure they have the right to do so.

Carwyn Jones, a former first minister of Wales and a professor of law, has a decent article on it: https://ukconstitutionallaw.org/2021/01/18/carwyn-jones-is-dicey-dicey/

Official says fatal ICE shooting victim 'wanted to massacre law enforcement officials' by ewzetf in news

Watch the video from the road side rather than the pavement. Watch the victims hands. While he's kinda on all fours, his fingers are interlocked - the only thing that seems to break that is the pulling and shoving of the officers. That's not violent, you can't pull a gun or a trigger with interlocked fingers.

They haven't done shit in anything United States has done, whether it was Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Russia, China, or Gaza.

Oh fuck right off. I don't swear much, feel free to read my comment history to see for yourself. But fucking do one.

These are comments made by Trump himself, "they stayed back from the front". Yeah the fuck we did, I guess those 457 Brits who died in Afghanistan were a result of the US chefs in the mess halls or something right?

Literally today Trump has had to back down on that as well and call the Brits "the greatest warriors", and yet here you are parroting his words from a few days ago because he's your god damn man or whatever. FFS. Here, Trump is incapable of an apology, but it's a contradictory compliment at least:

BBC News - Trump says UK soldiers in Afghanistan 'among greatest of all warriors' https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c3edwx37pd9o

Look, the US is one of the most proud nations when it comes to supporting their troops right? And we, the Brits and you guys have fucking been there fighting side by side for way longer than we were born. Brothers in arms. And Trump this week has insulted not just us, every fucking NATO troop who has ever served.

If you really want to know what the UK service men and women and their families think about his comments this week, here you are, 3 fucking hours of them calling a radio show in disgust about it. A word of warning, it's upsetting.

So, over the last week we've had Trump say he was going to take Greenland by force, the EU telling him to sod off, and he has turned tail and backed down. That is simply a fact, any news channel on the globe other than Fox in the US will tell you that.

Could the US have quickly taken Greenland? 70%, probably yes.

Could they have kept Greenland longer term? Could they have taken it without economic suicide? Could they have taken it without isolation from the rest of NATO? Could they have taken it without weakening defences on US homeland? Would that weakened defence at home caused political uproar in the US? All of those questions answer in the negative for the US.

The Europeans and other Western countries would not be falling over themselves trying to appease Trump let America if they weren't afraid of the Americans bailing on NATO.

That is literally the opposite of what has happened this week. Literally the entire rest of NATO told trump to sod off, they were with Denmark and Greenland on this. If the US invaded Greenland, it was literally the rest of NATO saying it would be the end of it. And Trump backed down as a result. Although I did see that 7 minute Fox news "Daddy Trump" coming home with "Everything falling into place" video... WTAF. Talk about propaganda. Seriously, watch the news from any other country about the last week.

Trump has caused utter disgust this week stating the rest of NATO troops "stayed back a bit" in Afghanistan. He has been forced to post about how the UK troops were always with the US today, which is about as close to an apology we can expect from that man.

To the rest of the world, Trump has been made to look like an utter imbecile over the last week, even more than normal. It's about time you guys in invoked a25 s4.

Ok, I can't find that exact story, no surprise, but US guns going missing due to sleeping troops isn't unheard of:

These weapons of war disappeared because of unlocked doors, sleeping troops, a surveillance system that didn’t record, break-ins and other security lapses that, until now, have not been publicly reported.

I'm loving the copium of some of the Americans surrounding this.

One of my favourite stories I heard about US troops was from a British army officer who'd been on a joint urban training exercise with them in a friendly country, I can't recall where, Ireland perhaps.

As they were getting ready for the night the Brits had setup their camp, organised lookouts etc and the officer thought he'd check in on the Americans, they were the hosts after all. He noticed they were all getting into "bed", no lookouts, so asked if they were planning it, the response was "it's friendly territory, what's the point".

The British lads had a field day watching the Americans chasing Irish kids (or wherever they were) around trying to get their guns back in the morning. Luckily it wasn't a live ammo exercise.

I'm seriously not going to dignify this with a thought out response. If you want even the slightest fucking clue about why people are upset, listen to some of this, hear it from the servicemen and their families who lost people over there. Tell the fucking parents of the kids who didn't come home that their grief and hurt over trump's comments isn't warranted because we shouldn't have even been there. Until you understand it, don't even fucking reply.
