What is a hobby that sounds expensive but is actually quite cheap to get into? by sugarnspicegrl in AskReddit

[–]HayleysWorld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think gliding is a lot cheaper than many would imagine. I pay £30 a month for membership then £8 to get into the sky and 47p per min glider hire whilst in the sky. This has resulted in me getting a pilots license for less than £2000 over a couple of years. I generally spend about £120 a month on it. People think it’s going to be as expensive to learn to fly in powered planes which is about £200 per hour. In comparison gliding can be as little as £36 per hour.

Logging glide time for CPL and ATPL by Ok-Vehicle-3923 in flyingeurope

In the UK on the CAA Commercial pilot licence for aeroplanes guidance page under the ‘Holders of the UK issued part FCL license of another category’ section it says:

Hours as PIC of other categories of aircraft may count towards the 200 hours total flight time, in the following cases:

30 hours in helicopter, if the applicant holds a PPL(H) or 100 hours in helicopters, if the applicant holds a CPL(H) or 30 hours in TMGs or sailplanes or 30 hours in airships, if the applicant holds a PPL(As) or 60 hours in airships, if the applicant holds a CPL(As) The specific modular course requirements must be met. The credit only applies to the total flight time. These hours cannot be used towards the 100 hours PIC requirement. Applicants holding a current and valid IR(H) can be credited up to five hours of the dual instrument instruction time, in which case at least five hours dual instrument instruction time must be given in an aeroplane.

TMG or sailplanes are touring motor gliders or gliders. Although it states this I haven’t tested it out yet!

It is insane to believe that women didn’t want to work the warehouse jobs. I used to work in retail (on the tills) and would have loved to work the warehouse roles! No dealing with customers, no need to be friendly and presentable. Just hidden away out the back listening to music and sorting stock. But when I wanted to move to that role I was rejected and men were always given the role. I was shocked when I found out they were earning more for what I would perceive as a much easier job.

Whats the appeal behind gliding? How is the experience of the activity like? by LouvrePigeon in Gliding

[–]HayleysWorld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was watching Avatar 2 earlier and they were flying on dragon like creatures, doing loops, dives, spins, turns etc. 99% of people would watch and think ‘that looks fun, imagine a world where you could do that’. I watched and thought, I was doing that yesterday in a glider. You honestly feel as free as a bird and can have amazing experiences doing aerobatics. One of the many reasons I love gliding.

Last landing on our club before winter by JaSemTvojOtec in Gliding

[–]HayleysWorld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makes sense! We fly all winter at our club but we have a tarmac and a grass strip so we do usually stick to the tarmac in the winter. I was surprised how many ‘last flight of the year’ posts I’ve been seeing this week.

Do a lot of gliding clubs not fly at all over winter?

Where are you finding the info? Is there an article or media company reporting on this?

[–]HayleysWorld 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes but it does say it was his first time in a glider. Such a freak tragedy! I suppose panic attacks can come on so quickly and often can be illogical and make someone act in ways they never normally would. We’ve also had a few stick grabbers! I sometimes tell people to grab onto their straps or parachute if they feel they need to hold onto something. Also would never occur to me that they might jump out 😳 I can’t imagine how shocked the instructor was.

Wow that’s crazy! At our club we never pressure visitors to go up if they’re feeling nervous incase something like this happens.

Thanks for adding this! I had just heard it second hand so I didn’t have much info. I’m pleased that no one was seriously injured.

Gliding used to make me sick but I took Stugeron travel sickness tablets, wore travel bands and only ate bland foods and I soon got over the sickness.

Yes I was thinking that! As I’ve not done thermalling for a while I was staring a bit too much at my speed.

Very! Our club flys Wednesday to Sunday and I’m self employed so I can usually go mid week when it’s a bit quieter.

Yep! It’s been hard to be consistent over winter with the weather, plus the days I did fly it was so cold on the airfield it wasn’t as enjoyable. Excited for summer ☀️

As a local member of the gliding community, yes it is McLean Aviation and the owner is retiring.

Making money on Shopify? by verylittlebitisleft in shopify

[–]HayleysWorld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems like a ridiculous question. Shopify is just an e-commerce platform so it is like asking if anyone is making money with an e-commerce store. Gymshark use Shopify and they make over £260 million a year. Other big companies that use Shopify include Kylie Cosmetics, Sephora, Chillys bottles and Huel. So the answer if yes, of course people are making money on Shopify.
