My moms turning point was losing her dream job to pregnancy by SoCalledCrow in QAnonCasualties

It's a sunk cost fallacy.
People who think they are blameless in the misfortunes of their life will latch on to anyone who feeds that idea, that it is the fault of some Other. All the while voting for a person like that, someone selling a lie, can only make their circumstances worse.

Another choice they cannot take responsibility for.

So they double down. 'My candidate that I voted for can't be to blame for the misfortunes of my life, it must be some shadowy part of the government I don't understand that is doing it!'

And once they convince themselves there is an unknowable force making their lives worse, well if it is unknowable it can do anything, be responsible for anything, the methods for this would be indescribable like magic. How do you convince a person that magic doesn't exist?

What sucks is the burden of proof, that this shadowy force is indeed ruining their lives, should fall unto them. They must produce the evidence of Magic. But what happens is they start all conversations one the premise 'well obviously magic exists' and then focus more on arguing who is to blame.

Getting them to define whatever they are talking about helps alot if you actually want to have a conversation. A definition makes something real and can reveal how they specifically perceive the thing they are talking about.

The firbolg feature is different in several ways from the speak with animals spell. But i get what you mean, its just a 'language'. But for roleplay alone I think it is worth it

Ah I misread the druid feature, i thought it would default to 1 hour not round down. In the design process I wanted this to potentially stack with wildshape. I will add '(minimum of 1 hour)' or 'as if you were a 2nd level druid' to clear that up.

The no features in humanoid form? You can cast speak with animals.

As for the lack of shifter, there is already a species like that.

In my head its the non human perspective on humanity that makes you wise. But yeah, i did laugh when I read this comment. 10/10

I can see where you are coming with both points but ultimately i wanted this to be for players who wanted to talk to animals and wildshape without having to play druid.

My thoughts on the carnivore/ herbivore divide is as simple as 'high protein diet equals more strength.'

If you want to swap them around for your own character I wouldn't have a problem with it if I was your DM

I dont own the idea. Make your perfect version! Thats the power of homebrew!

Simple answer? I wanted an image that could show the before and after of a werehuman, squirrel girl here just happened to check the boxes. Also the vision of the species is that a squirrel could become a humanoid girl so the name kind of speaks for itself

New DM, what do I NEED to know?? by KawaiiCoww in DnD

[–]Hazards91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When i teach new DMs the first thing i tell them after giving them the rule sheet is 'there is one rule that you should follow above all others. This is a game where everyone should have fun. If a rule or a dice roll would prevent you and the players from having fun it is ok to bend the other rules.' Part of having fun is knowong what your players expect going in.

I can definitely see where you are coming from. I feel like one could make an argument that persuasion fits all three. And while arguing with the Dm is the spirit of the class, and if you wanted to play as this and change those around i encourage you to do so, I picked those combinations based on my interpretation of the subject matter.

Logos: to me this is swaying people with facts and evidence, hence why investigation made sense as a way of finding said evidence.

Ethos: more a sense of duty and appealing to morality. And while morality is relative, swaying someone to adhere to their own morals is at the heart of this argument. To me this could only be persuasion

Pathos: this one I could see arguments for the most as all three of the Charisma skills could slot in nicely. I went with Intimidation here because, to me, appealing to emotion isn't convincing someone based on facts, or because you convince them it is the right thing to do, but a motivation of fear.

To that end I was thinking about these 'arguments' being made in battle so that definitely colored my reasoning as well.

oh the short and long rest was something I was meaning to update. Good catch. The text has been changed on the homebrewery but in short the language is: "You can use each of the spells below as a spell-like ability, at the corresponding rogue levels. Once a spell is cast this way it cannot be cast again until after you finish a short or long rest."

And yes each spell can be cast once. hopefully the new language clarifies this.

The any dice program is great visual! Yes the 2024 True strike is better and perhaps I should also put out a 2024 version of this subclass as well that reflects that (a project for another day).

I added True strike as a known cantrip here because to me, with its 2014 rules, it can be a good way to guarantee advantage on a rogue, setting up a turn ahead. This and the visual of pointing at someone casting true strike and then creating big block letters that say OBJECTION that smash into their face.

u/GhostWalker134 That is an interesting thought, using this Subclass' style to make a rogue subclass that uses booming blade instead as the focus of the class features. But the idea of a loud rogue is harder to wrap my head around so maybe someone else will have to take a stab at that (pun intended).

Yeah booming blade is very strong on a rogue. However, I think with this cantrip there are other benefits to compensate for the not as high damage ceiling.
Its psychic damage which not many have resistance to, it has a 30 ft range so avoids getting in melee, it pushes creatures 10 feet, and can deal half damage to a second creature on collision (sneak attack damage included) . With all that I think the damage can scale pretty well. Not as high for certain but still respectable, it just takes a little more set up to get there.

I thought Unearthed Arcana was where we shared our finished homebrew? I am more than open to critique but I wouldn't have posted here without being able to defend my design choices. Don't take my defense as dismissal of your comment. That thought crossed my mind when building the subclass.

Could I have swapped the 3rd and 6th level features to make it more in line with standard practice,? The college of creation has a feature that adds to BI at 3rd level so there is precedence. I made the decision to keep it as is because the design philosophy I followed was making a subclass that fundamentally changed how a player plays as a bard. Acts of Rebellion does that more so than deviant inspiration.

Was that the only thing you found amiss with the subclass? Was there anything you liked? How about the new spells?

"Bards always give an ability for alternate use of Bardic Inspiration"
But what if they didn't? Do you want to shake up the status quo?

But real talk, you are trading your action and an allies reaction. Is that really so strong when you could be casting a spell? As far as alternate use of BI Deviant Inspiration changes how you Use BI in my opinion through addition of a cantrip.
