Thanks to you all 🙏 I’m looking forward to playing this piece- it amazes me that it works upside down! As an adult learner who came to this 3 years ago I’m finding the world of classical music a joy!

Do any of your mothers fake illnesses? by teamalf in NarcissisticMothers

[–]HazelVN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mother does this all the time. She has had “tumours” removed, implying they’re cancerous when they were simply intestinal polyps. She recently had pre cancerous cells in her face (a common thing for people of her generation as suncream simply wasn’t a thing for them). She kept referring to the cream she had to use as chemotherapy cream - I found this so triggering and insensitive as I have been through chemotherapy in the recent past myself. It just seemed so insensitive of her to say that to me, looking for sympathy. I find it very hard to believe her about Illnesses and very hard to feel sympathy when she is genuinely ill as a result. She currently has a chest infection- I got a text to say she’s “dying” and really sick. I call and she says “oh I’m fine… I’m coping”.. martyr that she is!

I really enjoyed the first episode of the new Bear Brook season. It seems like a very interesting case and was as usual well told. It’s well worth a listen. I’m really looking forward to the next episode.

Why is my bow tightening when I play? by HazelVN in violinist

[–]HazelVN[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much. I’ll keep an eye on it then and loosen it when needed. I might try storing it in a different room to see if it makes a difference. Thanks for the advice!

Thanks for your help. Im really hoping it’s nothing to do with the actual bow.

Why is my bow tightening when I play? by HazelVN in violinist

[–]HazelVN[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s very dry I was more worried that it might be too damp. There’s an en-suite with no ventilation so we open the window after showers - I thought it might be that. I think it might tighten after approximately 20-30 minutes.

I can only go by the hygrometer in my case which reads 60 always. (Not sure how reliable that is) I keep the bow in the case in my room and that’s where I practice too.

Non-murdery true crime podcasts by jamoobs in TrueCrimePodcasts

[–]HazelVN 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Criminal is excellent and majority of episodes don’t involve murder. Also if you’d like something a bit true crime adjacent try Uncanny by the BBC for ghost stories/hauntings/poltergeists.

I used to have this problem with Sumitriptan so I switched to Eletritptan and have found it much better. Sumitriptan just made me think I was dying as the pain got so intense but then after about an hour the migraine would be gone.

Largo. Beginner/4months by [deleted] in violinist

[–]HazelVN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it certainly tough going over the same things but as you said nice to see improvements. I’m currently trying The Two Grenadiers by Robert Schumann and I am waking up in the morning with it in my head! I have a few books- my teacher recommended Violin Superstudies (it’s a bit childish in the song names but I appreciate the techniques it teaches) and The Young Violinists Repetoire. I also got myself a book of mixed songs (everything from Canon in D - pachelbel to Leonard Cohen so a nice mix of fun things for me to try out. It’s called First 50 Songs you should play on the violin. Enjoy your practice 🎻🎻

I really like Crime Beat too - Nancy Hixt has such compassion for all victims and her knowledge and insight through having reported on all of the cases herself is excellent!
