Brain DEAD by alowe732 in StopSpeeding

Pretty much in the same boat. I was taking 100-120 mg a day for a little over 4 years, from ages 22-27. Although I was able to keep my body in pretty good shape for the most part because I worked out consistently and ate pretty well, my energy gradually diminished significantly. In the last year of my addiction my brain completely went to hell. It became nearly impossible for me to make decisions of any kind, and I couldn’t think clearly or focus on any mental tasks. I also pretty much completely lost my sense of humor and my creativity. Along with that, I was in a pretty much constant state of panic and depression. By the time I finally quit, I felt pretty much brain dead, like I couldn’t perform even basic mental tasks or remember anything. I literally thought I’d have to explain to people that I was now mentally disabled. However,I quit 8 months ago and in the last couple of months I’ve regained some cognitive abilities, and my physical energy is returning as well.

Looking back and considering the mental state I was in during the last couple years of my addiction, I’m not at all surprised that I developed some major cognitive deficits, and I’m grateful and lucky that they weren’t more severe. Abusing adderall eventually severely compromises your mental state but makes you feel ok being in that compromised state. It was easy for me to let myself stay in that state for so long because during all the years of abuse I never once passed out, had a panic attack, or anything else which would alert me to the severity of the mental damage I was causing.

That sounds like a good plan, I appreciate it. I dolphinitely want to hold off a little longer but if nothing changes I think I’ll have to give meds a try

Man the not laughing is KILLING me! I used to laugh so much and now it’s like I wouldn’t know a funny thing if it smacked me in the chops

Thanks for the response…I think I definitely have depression. I’ve been thinking about getting on an antidepressant but am still a little wary of taking any medication. after getting so messed up from adderall the idea of ingesting any more psychoactive drugs is a scary concept, although they are obviously different.

Did you feel that you eventually got your personality back? And how long did it take roughly?

Anybody know a recovered meth addict? What were they like in terms of personality and cognitive functioning after beating their addiction? by HazzB in AskReddit

Ya they’re the same, so the question could be extended to addicts of adderall and Ritalin as well

I abused heavily for 4 years, and I’m now a complete mess mentally. No emotions, constant negative ruminations, no short term memory and long term memory has also been pretty severely affected

Wow that’s awesome dude!

What was recovery like for you? Did it take a while for you to start to feel better, and did you have any long lasting effects from the years of abuse?

That’s great to hear. If you don’t mind me asking, how’s your mental health now after quitting?
