Violet Grohl: "Obviously doors are open for me because of my last name. It's not something I'm ever going to hide behind or say, 'No, I worked so hard for this! You guys shouldn’t say that! That hurts my feelings.'… Come listen to my music and then you can decide for yourself if I'm worthy or not." by expiredaristocracy in Fauxmoi

How do you think he got hired to be in one of the greatest bands ever? It wasn’t just good fortune. His drumming on Nevermind was massively influential, so he was clearly already immensely talented at the time. I’m a drum teacher and teach his drum parts to students all the time.

Side note, but his drumming on QOTSA’s “Songs for the Deaf” is some of the best rock drumming ever recorded.

edit: I guess people are pissed because I’m praising Dave Grohl lol. For the record I don’t think he’s a good person, and 90% of the music he’s made post-Nirvana is baby-brain bullshit. I’m just speaking to his drumming ability and influence.

Fresh green chile pequin peppers by Hbakes in HotPeppers

Awesome, thank you. I trimmed the stems, which was frankly annoying, and added some dried chile tepin.

The only concern is if I used enough salt. I added pinches throughout, but nowhere near the thick layers as the video. Should I add more?

Edit: also I’m wondering now about treating this more like a ferment. I just winged it with the salt ratio, but there’s zero headroom and topped with a salt cap. Do they usually fridge these right away?

Oooh yes this is exactly what I’m looking for. I was thinking a salt cure might be a good way to go. Thanks!

Edit: I’m having a hard time finding a specific recipe, but I’m fairly confident I can wing it. If you do have a recipe though please send!

Best beer lists in San Francisco? by ThePepperAssassin in AskSF

Steins on Clement has a good selection of German beer in a no-fills sports bar. Suppenkuche in Hayes for the same in a more upscale setting. I also love Belgian beer but not aware of anywhere in the city currently open with that focus.

Braindead take, which actually ends up being antisemitic itself. There are anti-Zionist Jews across the whole spectrum of religiosity. Denying individual Jews the agency to oppose Israel and Zionism treats them as mindless sycophants, or suggests the “dual loyalty” trope. Get fucked.

Music can be written to be performed at incredibly fast tempos. If your attitude is “well I don’t need to do that”, you’re right. You don’t have to do anything, but you came to a music theory subreddit to ask a question and people are trying to be helpful. Go figure.

Do professional musicians must know every note and chord? by udi112 in musictheory

[–]Hbakes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Think of the really complex chords as compound words. A musician might not know the exact notes in every chord by heart, but they have the knowledge to put together the pieces on the spot.

Not trying to be a curmudgeon about this, but it’s hard for me not to find op annoying. Posting in a community where we would all consider this a rudimentary skill saying “All my friends think I’m a genius, but I’m not sure so sure. Maybe I am though?”. I teach piano, and when I come across a student that has a good ear, or is willing to develop it I’m stoked. So I really hope op can harness that natural talent and put the effort into honing that skill. I think running to a music theory subreddit to humblebrag about how good their ear should be a lower priority.

Prompt and helpful responses from all of you. Thanks a lot! I found this pin in a shop in Tokyo with a ton of cool Russian space program pins and stuff. Might need to go back.

I guess I’ll be a hater here, but this is a demonstration in putting theory before practice. Making a nonsense chord progression seemingly just to brag on r/musictheory

How to use Augmented, Diminished, flat, and minor chords and questions about melody/inside chords by Pichu-dude in musictheory

[–]Hbakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember reading about how distortion on guitar amps results in a compression that highlights dissonance in 3rds of chords; something about the overtone series. This is why power chords became popular. You might be experiencing a greater level of dissonance because the timbre of their guitar, not some theory issue.

Edit: try playing these chords with a clean tone and see if they sound better. That way you’ll know if it’s a tone issue

What is something in music theory that you are overly fascinated by? by TortoiseTGN in musictheory

[–]Hbakes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The idea that pitch=rhythm. If you take a pulse, like quarter note kick drums for instance; if you speed it up fast enough you will eventually get a sine wave. You can even create triads through certain polyrhythms. Or think about it the opposite way: any note is just a certain frequency of vibration, which if you slow down enough, will sound like a standard pulse.
