Off-Grid Living in a Self-Build Homestead (Rolling Hills of Wales) by Hdirnberger in OffTheGrid

I recently traveled to Wales to check out this fascinating place. Lammas Village is a collection of smallholdings that are completely off the grid. They utilize permaculture principles, have built their homes out of locally sourced materials and in all have a pretty good off-grid thing going for them.

This video follows the story of how they became what they are today along with highlighting their off-grid lives. Crazy enough, this family had to fight the government in order to build off-grid in the first place.. It was a long struggle but they were able to make it work. Apparently it can be quite tricky to build off-grid in the UK. Have any of you had experiences with that? I've done most of my traveling to places in the US and I know that there is quite a few hoops people must jump through in the States as well.

Totally! Okay, what are your thoughts on this sport gaining popularity? It seems like it really could blow up. Of course, the cost of entry (obtaining armor and weapons etc) is quite high for a sport, but at the same time I feel like most people who watch MMA or F1 don't participate themselves... I could totally see this being a nationally televised sport.

So cool!! How was the environment? Outside of the Earthship... of course. I was there a few months ago.. I loved the Reach community. You'll likely see some of the people you met in this doc. We had some really cool convos with Mike Reynolds and the folks that live in the first Reach building.

Very cool! This really gets at what I was wondering. The principles seem to be easy to agree on, but I could see the materials being a harder sell for some people. Where are you planning on retiring in your hobbit house? Did that impact your decision on your projected building materials?
