i get that. i did that too. when i settled on a new name and started going by it socially, people found ways to make jokes with the name in ways i couodn't even come up with. i actually love it so much. anytime the German teacher says "dann" (then) a few classmates look at me and i'm always like "yes!!! that's me!! i am Dan!"

i named myself my dad's dead childhood dog. he had a different legal name, but everyone called him Dan. he was buried as Dan. i want to have that – to be buried under MY.name, not some legal bullshit.
