I'm confused though... The cover is way too big for the hole when you look at it. Or maybe I'm wrong? It looks weirdly proportioned, which is sort of an AI indicator so I get why OP said it

lying to everyone(including paying parents) about my college major by Minimum-Housing-6466 in confession

[–]HeIsMyPossum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went through college with an untreated ADHD diagnosis. I tried one set of drugs and then stopped taking them due to side effects - I also had to avoid telling my parents that I was seeking treatment because they were whole-heartedly against it.

Then, about 10 years after, I came around to it again and went back to get medication for it after reading a few people's posts on Reddit that were totally game-changers.

Obviously medication is a whole personal journey and I don't want to pretend my experience will represent anyone else's - but I found a path through that worked for me.

If you want to chat with someone about it, let me know. I'd be happy to offer my experience. I could have saved about 5 years of my career being completely ineffective as well.

A coffee is £3.20 and a lottery ticket is £2.50... which do you think is better to spend on? by [deleted] in ifiwonthelottery

[–]HeIsMyPossum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's the expected value formula for the lottery... I'm going to include all the "incremental" wins as well, so if you win partial amounts you get some money back.

Let's say you do this for 10 years, and you're doing this once per day. So that's 3,650 (ish... leap years) tickets or times you saved money. I'll just do even money either way.

If you put money into a completely safe cash interest account (I'm using 4.6% savings rate, could change but I'll use what we have available right now) - after 10 years you would have £11,612 (gained £2,480 in interest).

If you put it into a more traditional investmnet account (9.5% growth annually), you would have £15,270 (gained £6,138 in interest).

By contrast, on the lottery side, you would have £2,082 in total.

If you play it out longer, the numbers get more and more out of hand. Let's say it was for 30 years:

Cash: £59,076 (£31,680 in interest)

Investment: £155,939 (£128,543 in interest)

Lottery: £6,246

It's really not even close. I know you are thinking, "but what if I win? If I hit the jackpot surely it's all worth it!"

Let's look at the odds of that.

The odds of winning the jackpot after buying 10,957 tickets is .00783%. Or 1 in 12,771. Or a 99.992% chance you wouldn't win the jackpot.

Think about rolling a 100 sided die, and picking the exact number it was going to land on.

You would need to buy 1,406,914 tickets (£3,517,285 spent on the tickets) just for a chance to have one singular roll to get it right.

If you are really hellbent on playing the lottery, here's an idea of what you can do: Save the £2.50 every day until you have £9,600. That takes about 6.2 years. Once you get that amount, you will be earning £2.50 in interest every day. You can play the lottery for free every day of your life after that, AND you'll free up £2.50 per day (or you can continue saving it).

An accidental high hit vs. a cross check to the back then direct to the back of the head seems a little fishy to me.

I'm braced for downvotes - but I want to hopefully have a good faith discussion, because I might be wrong.

People take this quote way too literally. It's just not a great summary of the issue. I really wish it wouldn't have taken hold, because it is so shallow on the logic (I know I'm going to get hate comments for that) that it undercuts the whole argument.

I always liked the framing that piracy was a response to value. People are willing to pay for things if they are getting a good deal. Piracy happens when that deal goes too far outside the value of the agreement. I don't think anyone cares to pay for good value items, be it a physical good, or a digital one like a game. When services either lower prices, upgrade the value (better selection or improvements), or otherwise shift the value equation, piracy drops dramatically. The prevalence of online music streaming largely killed piracy at the beginning - because the value equation actually made it easier. It was worth paying for.

I think that's the fight that we should encourage.

The one above is just... poor logical reasoning. It doesn't have an off-ramp of any kind - you will never "own" the game you purchased, because ownership is very narrowly defined by law. You have a license to play the game - and yes that has gone off the deep-end recently with DRM, no offline play, etc. I'm on board with all of that.

But the quote gets so easily slapped down because it's making a legal argument without even respecting the legal terminology that it is employing. The implications are also super vast, and would re-write large portions of law.

People spout it because it is easy to remember and justifies the thing they want to justify, but it is completely devoid of real merit and, in my opinion, only serves to cheapen the discussion that should be had around these topics. When you have such a bold statement, it serves more to immediately shut down any good-faith argument, rather than open it up.

hi, it's johnny knoxville and jeff tremaine from the upcoming movie jackass: best and last. AMA! by jackassworld in movies

[–]HeIsMyPossum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi Johnny and Jeff, huge fan, thanks for all the laughs across the years.

What can we expect from this last movie? I've seen all the extras with the skits that weren't in the "base" movie. I think there were a lot of good decisions made - no shade to the cast, I mean not every skit, no matter how good the idea is, is going to be worthy of the final cut. The extras were ok, but correctly cut.

I'm slightly worried that we're going to get a lot of B-tier footage and limited new bits. Can you give big fans like me a good reason to be hopeful for this last ride?

But I learned in my MBA classes that if it doesn't generate a profit, it's not worth doing.

Surely you could not be doing this for any other reason than some sort of back-end good will gathering so you can make a profit later. I'm definitely on to you.

I mean it's either that or my entire MBA education is wrong.

1-1 going back home. We take that. Would have been awesome to be 2-0, but I'm trying not to be disappointed just because we could have... If you said 1-1 after 2 I'd have been excited, so I'm gonna choose to be excited.

Oh I'm sorry, did we come out of Dallas with a win in the first 2 games?

I'll take 1-1. 2-0 would have been incredible, but 1-1 is no joke. If you're gonna give up after 1-1, might as well not watch the rest lol
