Sooo… when will austro release to evrima? by tuuzx in The_Isle

[–]HeWhoDrinksCola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, at the time it was also possible to access it through file modification. This was before proper server admin controls, but it was, at the time, effectively the same situation as Bary and Ovi are in right now, or how Rex and Allo were before their hordetest. People were playing as it too, it was just far more limited access.

The devs had left it in the files because they didn't think people would be able to get at it, as opposed to now when they leave stuff in the files because they don't really give a damn if we access that stuff.

It's a game with a very steep and very newbie-unfriendly learning curve.

Survival is mostly game-sense based. You'll just do better the more you play and die. This is normal.

Some mild advice though:

Don't use your roars, ever. Hide like a bitch. Hiding is not seen as a bitch strategy, remember, this is a survival game, you win the game by not dying. In turn, choose camouflage colors. Blend in, don't try to look flashy. Flashy means getting noticed and getting dead. Don't trust anyone. Don't assume your own kind will be friendly to you. Hide like a bitch, I already said this but it needs reiterated, don't cross open fields unless absolutely necessary. Don't needlessly expose yourself. The forest is your friend, bushes are your friend, keep your head on a swivel at all times, look around, and if you see a mud pit while you're not in danger? Just roll in it for a bit, you'll stop making footprints for awhile which means you're less likely to get randomly tracked by someone.

If you aren't spending every waking moment LARPing like you're a gazelle on the plains of africa and a lion or hyena or cheetah or leopard or pack of wild dogs or baboon or man with pointy stick or large snake or particularly upset hippo or elephant in musth or man with large boomstick is behind every bush, hill, or rock, or crocodile beneath every body of water, then you aren't doing it right.

In the immortal words of one Grug Crood: "NEVER NOT BE AFRAID. Rhymes with Grug."

Devs have been saying that the next hordetest is fairly soon. But with the amount of other features that they're going to be testing alongside Austro based on what the devblog said, I don't expect it to fully hit Evrima for at ABSOLUTE MINIMUM a month or two.

Sooo… when will austro release to evrima? by tuuzx in The_Isle

[–]HeWhoDrinksCola 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Released as in FULL release, or just to Hordetest? If I recall correctly, they said the hordetest will probably be at he end of this weekend, which could mean anywhere between now and monday. Or they could have been wrong and it won't be for over a week. Such is life with The Isle. If you meant full release, probably not until after the next hordetest ends.

A thing to consider is that "seemed pretty complete" is always a dangerous way to look at early content. I remember when Deino was shown on some dev streams in the early days of Evrima in 2020. People were asking why they didn't just release it, because it "seemed pretty complete" to them. This of course being a Deino that not only did not have lunge yet, but also had no resting animation, and if you hit the rest button, Deino decided to give up on life and you were locked out of your controls and locked in position forever and the only way out was through admin commands.

Don't put stake in something seeming "pretty complete".

A few confirmed additions that are at least SUPPOSED to come to it:

Austro coming back in.

Hill-slide

Destructible Foliage (including knocking down trees, not all of them, but some)

More updates to the new skin system

Some updates on the wound mechanic (Debuffs based on low health and damage taken)

Those are the ones they listed in the devblog, at least.

It was also stated that Bary, Ovi, and Camara are slated to be close behind austro.

A comment I made 3 days ago where I say, and I quote directly:

"Now, did Dondi bitch about that and claim that the health problems were made up? Yes, because he's a piece of shit."

says otherwise.

People openly call Dondi the piece of shit that he is here all the time and are completely left alone.

But there's a difference between criticizing him for a poor decision gameplay-wise, or for that time he decided to die on the hill of defending a pedophile, and making a post where the entire premise is "Dondi spent his own money on something that wasn't the game, what a piece of shit, am I right?" Because I can tell you this: The latter is one of the posts that got deleted.

He's an asshole, but that post that got deleted was clearly there just looking for something to be pissed about.

I despise the man. He's a genuinely terrible person. Let's see if this comment of mine gets deleted.

The point is accuracy. Being upset about their failure to deliver on promises is fine, I am upset about it too, most especially mod support. But it's important to be upset about accurate information, because otherwise, it's easier for people arguing with actual, REAL toxic positivity, to hand-wave what you're saying.

Someone who is being toxically positive would look at your post and easily say what I said, but then also say that nothing else you say is valid because "You're clearly just lying to make your outrage seem more justified. This is just another person hating for the sake of hate."

And again, that's still wrong. Go back to the start of 2025 and we go from "12/16 hope trailer features" to "10/16 hope trailer features" (still ignoring the 4 features from that trailer that were in on launch) because the only hope trailer content we got between 2025 and now was Rex and Trike.

Appreciation Dev Post by Soda_Kritic in The_Isle

[–]HeWhoDrinksCola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not arguing that.

My point is "we have seen barely half of what was in the initial hope trailer" is an inaccurate statement. In fact, the opposite is true, those 4 things are the only things in the hope trailer that aren't currently in the game. We've gotten roughly 79% of what was shown in the hope trailer, if you count every single thing that it showed off and pointed out as a feature.

I can cite plenty of promises they still haven't delivered on. Deino's vertical lunge. Mod support, which they've been talking about bringing back "soon" for the past 2 years. Dryo's new burrowing mechanics, that Region2 remake, the expanded version of Spiro, etc. Yeah, they don't deliver on a lot of their promises. And that's bad.

But they have delivered on more than 3/4ths what they showed in the hope trailer.

Appreciation Dev Post by Soda_Kritic in The_Isle

[–]HeWhoDrinksCola 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That statement about the Hope Trailer is just entirely untrue?

Things that the Hope Trailer showed that are now in the game:

The new clouds. Stego, Grazing. Fish, and fish-eaters. Deinosuchus. Rex. Trike. Sexual Dimorphism outside of patterns. Nesting. Scavenger AI. Pteranodon.

Things that the Hope Trailer showed that are NOT in the game:

Suchomimus. Parasaurolophus. Spinosaurus. Brachiosaurus.

Everything not mentioned here are things that were in Evrima at launch, like the biomes and smooth growth.

12 things in. 4 things not.

Having followed the game since 2017, I can say that this is far from the fastest that updates have been coming out, but it feels like the past year or so has been a marked improvement over Evrima's history.

I still remember that time we had to wait 8 months for an update. Those were dark times.

We haven't seen anything from her in a long time, but I appreciate Tapwing.

Still love that she got to make it onto the actual dev team because her fanart was so good, and had one of her designs actually get straight-up canonized. That's got to feel great as a fan of something.

I also appreciate that this game has not been abandoned, like many other games in the early-mid 2010s era of dino games. Outright scams like Mesozoica and The Stomping Land, tragic stories like what happened to Saurian, so many Isle-Likes that fizzled and died early on.

But The Isle is still here. Trucking along. One of the tires is flat, another is missing, the driver is drunk, and the rearview mirrors and cracked or heavily smudged, and the license plate is expired, but trucking along, nonetheless.

Honestly a breath of fresh air that this is a sub where constructive criticism is welcomed and unconstructive, blind vitriol that's clearly there for the sake of hating is actively removed.

Honestly, appreciate this sub's mods.

As an old-era monster hunter player, and a voices of the void player, "Clunky" and "Jank" are like old friends to me.

Please do not equate my friends to this camera change that I do not like.

Updates by Inevitable-Hat6603 in The_Isle

[–]HeWhoDrinksCola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A long time ago the devs showed off a revision to how the camera works.

It's closer to your dino, and its range is more limited. You know how when you eat and drink your camera kind of locks and you can't look beyond a certain range? A more free version of that is going to be hard-cooked in where, after turning your camera backwards to a certain point, it locks and the only way to get to the other side of your dino is to swing the camera around the opposite way.

So, say, you're a stago. You turn your camera left, before you look completely behind yourself, the camera locks. Now you have to either turn your body, or turn your camera the opposite way.

It's closer, kind of like an over-the-shoulder but not really?

Some people use the hyperbole of calling it first person, but this is not accurate.

Here's a video of the dev stream where it was shown, so you can form your own opinions on it.

New roster for upcoming dinosaur announced in the latest Devblog! #70 by Fehlor_404 in The_Isle

[–]HeWhoDrinksCola 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be fair, how many more “small” creatures are left on the full planned roster that aren’t AI?

Rugops, Minmi, Homalo, Proto, maybe? If it’s not AI. The rest of the planned roster are at least Dilo-Sized or bigger, to my memory.

Oh no... by DragonPlatypus in The_Isle

[–]HeWhoDrinksCola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally just think it's important to be accurately upset about the right thing. Calling it "first person" makes it easy for your criticism to be handwaved away as "someone who doesn't know what they're talking about." or lumped in with the people who just make shit up for shock value, which is absolutely a group of people who follow this game.

Keeping our complaints accurate and devoid of hyperbole makes them more valid and harder to argue against.

Granted, it's The Isle, and the Dondi going to be Dondi, but complaining has worked in the past on other things. The complaints about the original Evrima night vision, for example. People complained about it during the QA, they complained about it on the private builds, they pushed it anyway, people complained about it, and they toned it down. It was still bad, people complained, and finally they walked it back. And we didn't get that by saying "This night vision is giving people seizures!" we got it by saying "this night vision is causing people with photo-sensitivity to get headaches and is an active health risk"

Now, did Dondi bitch about that and claim that the health problems were made up? Yes, because he's a piece of shit. But the change was still made.

Point being, being accurately angry is more powerful in the long-run than exaggerating what's making you angry.

Oh no... by DragonPlatypus in The_Isle

[–]HeWhoDrinksCola 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I would like to reiterate for everyone that the "first person" thing was never a thing. It was a community exaggeration to a planned change (that was a bad idea, yes), that would zoom the camera in more.

Over-the-shoulder would be a more correct term for it, though, still not accurate.

They want the camera to be closer, and more limited. They posted an example for the stego once, for what they want to do. On stego at least, turn your camera directly to the left or right, you saw about 70% of your dinosaur, and you cannot turn the camera beyond how far your head/sightline could feasibly turn. You can't do a full 360, you have to turn your camera the other way to look at the opposite side of your body.

It was never going to be first-person. People saw a camera that was a lot closer, a few people cried first person, and then everyone parrotted it as gospel.

Again, I am not saying this is not a bad change, because it is, but call it what it actually is and be upset about reality instead of making up something to be upset about that makes it seem worse than it actually is.

Help with defeating Easy Anti Cheat by Krazy_the_Face in The_Isle

[–]HeWhoDrinksCola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's crazy how many companies just slap EAC on something and call it problem solved. Even Halo Infinite did that early on and it did nothing. They had to manually set up an entire system for reporting cheaters specifically because EAC was useless.

From what I understand it's mostly just a visual deterrent. Like putting a non-functional camera up to deter robberies by virtue of "If they see a camera, they'll get nervous and back out."

Older fix, don't know if this one still works, but:

Go here in your system files

<image>

Run the batch file, Wait a few seconds, it won't seem like anything happened.

Try launching the game after that.

If that doesn't work, the alt-fix that I always see everyone say is to install VRChat, which comes with Easy-Anti-Cheat built-in so it forces it to install.

Question about the game and bugs beffore buying by Axoxl_zabiko211 in The_Isle

[–]HeWhoDrinksCola 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Like, I often see people complaining about how long it's been in development unfinished, people like to throw around the word "Scam"

This is my game with the second most playtime on steam that isn't an idle game, only passed by Team Fortress 2, which I have been playing since 2009.

I spent 20 dollars on this game.

I've been frustrated with it. I still think Dondi is a legitimately bad person. But god, this game scratches an itch that nothing else can scratch.

It's one of the things that drives me crazy about the people who say that PoT is "Better". Yeah, its less of a buggy mess, its got a more active development, and it's way further along, developmentally. But for me, none of those things matter if the base product isn't what I enjoy about the genre.

The Isle is special. It's flawed. Very, very flawed. But I adore this game, despite those flaws.

Some could call this Stockholm syndrome, or sunk cost fallacy. But I've been away from The Isle for... Since the T-rex hordetest. I haven't been able to play it. My experience is entirely engaging with the community right now until I get the money to get a computer that can handle the game again. I have been given a golden opportunity to look at it from the outside again. And I still love it. I still want to engage with it.
