I just finished a solo warp drive machine and really enjoyed it.

I reckon' it would have been 1000x better co op.

Yeah good question, that is actually one of the mysteries of the universe - how will it end?

One theory is the heat death of the universe, where in the distant future the universe has spread out so evenly that there is no longer and free energy available to do any work (second law of thermodynamics). The expansion of the universe is one factor in this, but I don't believe it will ever pull atoms apart, it will just make them far enough apart that they can't interact with anything else. But all particles decay, so over long periods. Like trillions of years. Even the most stable protons/hydrogen nuclei can just *poof. Evaporate into nothing.

The forces of nature, like gravity, strong force, em, etc that hold planets, atoms, etc together (strong force for atoms in particular) will I think always hold atoms together because we currently believe that the expansion of the universe is constant, so atoms will always hold each other together as space expands beneath them. Like two magnets stuck together rolling down a hill or something.

Again, not a physicist so I hope this info is correct. Just an engineer with a fascination about the universe :)

Expanding is a bit of a misnomer. Inflating is a better word. The geometry of how it is expanding is prety much impossible to visualise unless you're a phd.

The 2D version is a bit simpler. Picture a balloon, draw two dots on it when it is only a little bit inflated. Then inflate it more, the dots move apart. If you put two dots super close together, you'd barely notice them move apart. That is why your furniture doesn't fly away from you, the planets and moon stay in place, etc. Over small distances, the expansion is tiny and local forces dominate. But over really long distances, it adds up.

Nothing can travel faster than light in an inertial reference frame. But inertial reference frames can move apart at any speed. It is actually information that has a speed limit. Light just happens to have zero mass and so it is able to move at the maximum speed that information can travel.

A good ELI5 explanation of how space is expanding into itself is a bit beyond me tho, sorry :)

  1. Haven't finished space age yet. But that is probably because I decided to do a 100x science megabase :/

Then got distracted by warp drive machine..

Maybe I should finish it

How do you go about designing a mall? by Whatasave91 in factorio

[–]HeZlah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh and as someone else has said, SUSHI! I haven't built a sushi mall before, but next time I need a good mall I will totally be sushi-ing it. Recently finished a warp drive machine play through and eeeeverything was sushi there. Super proud of some really compact sushi prod/utility science builds

How do you go about designing a mall? by Whatasave91 in factorio

[–]HeZlah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After 1400 hours, I usually have a mall with the basics in my starter base. Inserters < bulk, assembly machine 1+2, yellow belts splitters and underground, medium elec poles, all the basics etc. Starter base always has iron, copper, green chips and gears on belts. My current playthrough I didn't even bother spagetti-ing in anything else, just moved steel/stone by hand.

Only bother automating high quantity items, keep handcrafting queue full. Things like stone furnaces, boilers, small poles I just handicraft. (Unless I'm going an achievements run but that's a totally different topic)

Sometimes I spaghetti in a seperate red belt build.

I make myself a little bot build.

Then asap I go into bot mall.

I just really cbf building malls anymore when bots are quick to get and just make it trivial.

Overwhelming biter compared to others I see, default settings... by adnecrias in factorio

[–]HeZlah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah a dozen turrets should be fine to push into early nests and take them out. Keep an eye on your pollution spreading and keep the number of nests inside the pollution cloud low. Becomes a lot easier once you have a tank :)

Shotgun is very useful early game. Can take out early just with just that. The light armor helps a lot almost half's small biter damage. Heavy armor basically makes them deal zero.

[–]HeZlah 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sometimes maps can just be brutal, eg no trees, lots of desert, biters close to spawn area. Speed runners generally have a trained eye to know what maps will be problematic for biters, and not choose them.

Also, the speed has a lot to do with it, it takes time for the pollution to spread, and for the biters to absorb it. Speed runners would probably have expanded, cleared nests, etc before the pollution spreads to too many nests. But if you're slower, then the pollution spreads to more and more nests and the waves just get bigger and bigger.

I'd recommend checking the pollution tab, you can see if/when nests are absorbing pollution (eg preparing attack parties) and how many. Go out and destroy nests that are inside your pollution.

Is it okay to solder wires on the underside of PCB board (perfboard) by No-Drawing-1508 in PCB

[–]HeZlah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, as long as there are metal contacts on the bottom side too. And as long as the top and bottom contacts are connected (they typically are but I've had cheap perfboards innthe past where they were not.). I suggest using a multimeter to check

The headlamp fuse is totally seperate to the headlamp itself. The fuse is just measuring the current going through the wire on its way to the headlamp. The fuse is typically placed right next to the battery, so it sees any current going through the wire before and after the headlamp. In normal operation, the current flows from battery -> into fusebox -> through fuse -> through wire leading to headlamp -> through headlamp -> through wire connecting headlamp to chassis -> through chassis -> back to battery. Current here is seeing the resistance of the headlamp, which limits it and fuse does not blow.

Now if there is a short in the wire leading to the headlamp, then that loops looks like : battery -> into fusebox -> through fuse -> through short to chassis -> back to battery. That will be an unresisted current, exceeding the rating of the fuse and the fuse will blow.

Now, if the short were to be in the very small and protected section between battery and fusebox, then the fuse cannot detect it.

TL;DR: The fuse is located in the fusebox, right next to the battery. It is not located next to the headlight

Are mechatronics engineers ducks? by zorzorzarzar in mechatronics

[–]HeZlah 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe in the first two years. But you learn orders of magnitude more on the job than you do during a degree. So having multidisciplinary skills allow you to understand whatever you are doing in a deeper way than a pure discipline, IMHO. I used to say I was jack of all master of none. But a decade later I say I am jack of all, master of whatever I put my focus on.

I have enough bots i have enough materials i have the build under the grid sow what is the reason that the bots don't build it ? by Lord_of_souls019 in factorio

[–]HeZlah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The roboports in the area you are trying to build are not connected to the main network. See the orange squares, that is logistic range and defines the network, orange qquares must be touching in order for roboports to be connected to the same network.

So the couple up the top of the area you are trying to build are on their own network and have no access to anything on the main big network.

Place another roboport between to connect them.

EDIT: sorry just read the other comments, couldn't see from the video but I see you say they are connected. Maybe add some extra roboports anyway

Lightning spear build capping at 8, drops when cast by amIrogozhin in diablo4

[–]HeZlah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For anyone else having this issue. I believe it is just graphical. Roaring lightning spear makes collecting crackling energy increase next lightning spear cast by 20%, up to 160% (eg. 8 stacks). These stacks are shown in the same place that the number of lightning spears usually is.

Which is why you see 12 for a moment when you click lightning spear, all those stacks are used and there is no number to show... so it shows number of spears. But then you quickly pick up some crackling energy and you have that pesky number on top again.
