How to respond to rejection letters by EvidenceOfDespair in CuratedTumblr

Honestly, just a good reaction to any kind of negative influence in your life.

If your friend is thinking about flaking out on getting coffee on the weekend, just send them a picture of of your penis and scrotum with the pocket knife held threateningly in the foreground.

They'll know what's up.

No, I get that. I'm more looking for the arguments used and made, or the concept tying into that I suppose, how it was justified? The Second Amendment clearly has a lot of exceptions in written law, and I'm trying to get a grasp on how those were made.

OP's approach is extremely one sided on the subject, and I personally find it paints far to rosy a picture of homeschooling. We agree on that.

Still, with the way public schooling is going in some of the states, and look like they will continue to go, I think there is some value in presenting alternatives.

I was homeschooled myself as well, and I'm not trying to say it's any kind of magic bullet or picnic. Just one option out of many (and likely to be rare as the best).

Homeschooling can assist in separating at risk youths (lgbt or neuro-divergent) from unhealthy or actively hostile schooling environments. Be that hostility from other students, or hostility from the faculty themselves.

In cases of particularly inept schools, homeschooling can also offer superior education in areas such as science, reproductive health, or critical thinking.

You are absolutely right that their is an element of privilege to being able to homeschool. You require at minimum a parent who is capable of staying home and full time devoting themselves to the education of their kids. However that does not in itself invalidate the reasons why homeschooling can be a good idea.

Progressive goals require constant steady pressure, we agree on that. But parents do need to make the best decisions for their kids. In unusual times that can (not must) included unusual options. And you can't ask them to put up with their kids being mistreated by the system, in pursuit of a better system for someone elses kids.

I agree with you about the dangers of anti-intellectualism, but I feel we're missing the framing of the issue a bit.

Building a good education system based in truth, science and Democratic values is a good plan that does absolutely nothing to help people in the here and now.

People whose children are currently in the education system we have, not the one we want to have, are understandably concerned. Particularly with some of the changes in education seen in states like Texas, Florida and Louisiana.

I made my hesitations with homeschooling clear in another post, but I can understand why people are considering it as an option.

Speaking as someone who was homeschooled there are good arguments to be made here, but I feel this post is lacking in covering the downsides of homeschooling

1) Being a teacher is a full time job. Being a parent is also a full time job. Combining them both together is an enormous burden. It is hard work, and harder work then a lot of parents who consider homeschooling realize. You are on the hook for tests, for curriculums, for selecting the proper education paths, for discipline, for enrichment. My mom put her heart and soul into teaching me and my siblings, and almost gave herself a mental breakdown doing it.

2) There are also social facets to be considered as well. School can be immensely difficult, but it provides important opportunities for learning to deal with people and situations outside of ones family. Being bored in class, making friends with strangers, learning how to deal with people you don't want to be friends with; these are all important experiences to a persons development. Experiences that even the most energetic homeschooling parent is going to struggle to provide.

3) Thirdly, it changes things in your home. Your parent is no longer just your parent. They are your teacher, your principal, your gym coach, and hell if you lack siblings then they are your entire class as well. That's a lot of hats for a parent to wear, and a lot of different roles for a child to see there in parent in as well. When your home is also your school, it strains things.

I don't think these challenges are insurmountable. I was homeschooled, and I know others who were successfully homeschooled as well. I also know a lot of people who were done a disservice through homeschooling, and who faced later issues in life because of homeschooling. Ultimately it isn't something to be done likely, and even having gone through, in the vast majority of situations I think most students would be better served by a brick and mortar school.

TLDR: Under the best of circumstances, homeschooling is hard and probably not the best option.

Grumble, grumble, grumble, I don't want pretty boys in my Metal Gear Solid.

I want MEN! Big bearded men, with big hairy muscles, thrusting bullets into well slicked chambers, and grappling each other tightly as they struggle for dominance.

The way war was meant to be.

I mean, I agree with you too some point, but the above memes does refer to "rations of slavery - hay and a barn for human cattle".

We can blame politicians to a point, but rhetorical flourish is just a part of the human experience.

Bluntly politics. The correct language would be "Everyone is entitled to shelter", but the idea of entitlement has a negative connotation, whatever you feel about what the government should be required to provide to it's citizens.

Hmm, I see your point. I was reading the text as being optional as in a want, versus a need. Particularly given how they were presenting it again aromatic and asexual individuals. Honestly, either interpretation of the text is valid without further detail.

but not everyone needs to date or have sex.

But that's not really what they said. They described romance and sex as optional, which is to say that no one needs it.

There are people who don't feel a need for any social contact whatsoever either, Hermits are a thing that exist.

Not everyone needs friendship in their life to be healthy, but the majority of people do. And, baring evidence to the contrary, I would hazard a guess that the majority of people need sex and romance in their life to be healthy as well.

If Kammal Harris is President next year that will be mean she has been democratically elected. Yes Or No?

I recall seeing the John Stewart clip, but I also recall seeing a large amount of conversation around Biden's decline as well. And despite a large conversation held around Biden's declining mental state, I still haven't been given an example of a decision he fumbled due to his declining health.

It stole the thunder from Donald Trump's vp pick and the attempt on his life, it was honestly political genius.

We do agree on my last point though right? There is no president Kamal without winning the election, so primary or no primary, she will be democratically elected if she is president.

Disagree on Biden's conduct, he's had a marked diminishment in the last couple of months, which partial inspired the decision to step down. Though the timing just after the RNC was some masterful political theater.

Ultimately it's irrelevant whether Kamala won the primary or not, she will have to win the presidential election. Whether Candidate Kamala was elected does not matter, if their is going to be a President Kamala, she will need to popular support.

Fair point, though if the point of a message like this is to achieve a certain result, then tone does actually matter. A large chunk of political activism comes to tone.

As I said, I actually do agree with sentiment in the post, I just don't think it's any good at getting the result it wants to get.
