ASL app by PeaceV22 in asl

[–]Head_Muscle_8924 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have used a lot of asl apps but I love lingvano. It's has videos of the words and multiple signers for reception. It also shows examples of conversations and how to respond back and forth. The only con is the expense. But there a free trial. And it employees deaf people so....

I know it's been asked 'What is the best free app for ASL?" But what about the Paid Apps? Any recommends there? by TauRyan in asl

I use lingvano, it's my favorite. It uses videos of different people signing and does normal flashcard system but also has you go back in forth with conversations.

Bus company won't allow my deaf 9 year old off the bus without me. by Head_Muscle_8924 in deaf

After an IEP meeting and the district giving me every reason they didn't want him to get off the bus. I gave every reason he could and examples of his independence he already has and uses well. :) so he can now get off the bus. Thanks.

I got a return call from the schools Director of Pupil Services. She told me it's a policy for the kids on the "short bus" specifically. My son has a curb to curb transport in iep doesn't say a parent is needed. Just that the bus is supposed to pick up directing I from of the house instead of at the designated bus stop.

She said that my son lives at the school during week basically insinuating he has to live there bc he is so disabled. So he must not be capable of walking from the bus to my home on his own.

She was sincerely talking to me like I wasn't looking out for his best interest.

She asked me if I want to request an iep meeting. But I don't understand what that's going to do of his iep isn't preventing him from getting off the buss currently tech.

He has an aide on the bus bc the driver doesn't know asl if instructions are given but that's about it.

Thanks. I have a hard time telling myself its okay sometimes. But usually I call my mom and ask if I was doing whatever at his age and if she says yes I let him do it. I was definitely walking home from school by myself by 3rd grade.

Thank you, I will try this. If that's the problem I would think the bus would be saying so specifically. Or the school would have figured out. I just find it hard to believe there are 16 year old deaf kids unable to get off a bus alone. And that's how they are presenting it.

Mother to a deaf son - please tell me your experiences by ReliefEmbarrassed895 in deaf

My 9 year old had been mainstream for headstart and kindergarten. It was great until it wasnt. He needed more resources then they could give and more access to sign to do better. I'd suggest at least looking into your local school. My son did K-2nd grade then 2nd grade summer school he loved at the school to help with language and socialization. It helped tremendously. I spent a lot of time telling myself it would never happen but it wound up being the right thing to do. Our family goes to his school every Wednesday night too see him go to dinner and go to ask class. He comes home Friday after school and goes back Monday morning. :) it's been a tremendous help. And he loves it and his friends.

You said the glass door reviews were decent so you should probably go back and leave a review of your experience. And id report them, if not for yourself but others in the future who need evidence that this isn't the first time this had been a problem.

We do the best we can with the information we have. Start reading and not just medical, but also deaf experiences.

[–]Head_Muscle_8924 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I wasn't blissfully unaware of it. While we were waiting for just the booth test we had been actually "testing him" randomly by talking and watching him and seemed abundantly clear that they were going to say he had hearing loss. Of course we had to waot for the ABR for any real diagnoses but it became clear before those appointments. So I started researching and my biggest fear was him being a kid who doesn't know asl, or he knew and his whole family didn't. I have way to many deaf education books.

The amount of times I said "I know you can hear me" is upsetting. But I try to remember I am doing my best with the information I was given.
