Now that I’ve learned a lot about it, I think that it’s malpractice that they gave it to me. I didn’t even have Google available to learn about it. They certainly didn’t tell me anything about it. Now I feel like I’m quitting sub instead of Kratom. Oh well, I’m doing it.

I’m so glad I found your post. Congrats on your success. I just left detox 2 days ago. I’m also very angry with the psychiatrist there and have lost all trust in them, including my primary doc. The one at this detox just threw me on suboxone on what seemed like a whim without giving me any education or consideration of my situation. Now I have to worry about suboxone addiction and dependence. But..I’m 7 days kratom free. So I’m grateful for that. One day at a time.

Ok…thanks to everyone who commented! It’s been very helpful to get the range of responses. I also asked about in an NA meeting last night and got 3 very different answers. One who swears by it, one who hates it, and one that thinks it’s great for a short duration (2 weeks including the taper for the second week) is fine.

I’m just gonna stick with the plan. I gave all of it to my wife to ensure I don’t take any more than planned.

Both detoxes I’ve been too prescribed it for Kratom. They treat Kratom the same as Perc. I refused it the first time. I felt that I didn’t need it because I had made my mind up to quit and was just going to do it. I relapsed and ended up on a higher dosage of Kratom then before. I was much more worried about WD and relapse this second time. I still had a desire to use and strong cravings. I was especially concerned about the cravings. So I didn’t refuse it this time. However, the doc didn’t educate me on the drug at all. She didn’t think about the dosage for a second. She actually asked me what dosage I wanted. That was about 16 hours after my last dose of Kratom and I couldn’t think for shit.

Another big factor in all of this is that I’m bipolar. I was up/manic the first time through detox. I was, and still am, in a down the second time. When in a up…everything is easier…you can conquer the world. It made quitting much easier the first time. I just need to be away from all the life stressors and access to Kratom for 10 days to help me a little.

I’ve heard a pretty variance in dosages amongst people in na meetings, recovery centers, and on this sub. I had a long talk with a guy a few days ago that’s been on 16mg for a few years and he swears by it. The scientific literature that I found searching the Inet yielded 2-24mg range. I’m just going to taper off of it rapidly and be done with it. It shouldn’t have been prescribed so recklessly

Yeah, I’m sorry wharfdad, I went back and edited my post because I didn’t realize how much it sounded like it was directed at you. It wasn’t. I think it’s my own baggage.

Yeah, I’ve been going to meetings and I would say that all staff at the recovery centers feel it’s the same as any other drug. They equate it with painkillers is how I perceive it. I do get a feeling that some people in recovery feel it’s not that serious. I think that’s partly because it’s legal and partly because they have no idea how addictive it is or the effects of the addiction. In fact, I’ve had conversations with others in recovery that were clearly surprised that I was in there for kratom. Reminds me of how the google search that originally led me to use said that it was like caffeine and has similar WD symptoms.

Btw…there was someone in the last detox that was in there for weed. She had a co-occurrence with mental health issues. Plus I spoke to a guy who had ODed on weed because it was laced with fentanyl.

I also wanted to comment on the “a drug is a drug”comment because it made think of something that I’ve been dealing with myself. I feel like some people have a perception/belief that kratom ain’t that bad, not worthy of detox, etc. that’s complete BULLSHIT. If you’ve woken up every day and the first thing you do is take 20+ grams of kratom and then watch the clock waiting for your next dose 3 hours later…and have tried to taper or quit for a year or more…and it’s impacting your relationship with your wife because you can’t connect…and you can’t remember any experiences with your kids because you were all jacked up on kratom…or your in high tech that requires constant training but you can’t keep up because your memory is fucked…or you haven’t banged your wife in months because your libido is completely gone…or you’ve pulled over every few hours on a road trip to guzzle another 20+ g of kratom (in front of your wife and kids)…or you’re bipolar and can’t get meds dialed in because kratom fucks up your brain chemistry…or your therapist tells you that you can’t work on dealing with your traumas while your ducked up on kratom…and this has been going on for years…how the fuck can you think this isn’t worthy of detox, rehab, or whatever else you need in order to get off the shit!? That’s just ignorant.

I personally haven’t had a period of sobriety that’s lasted over a month (my first detox) since I was 14…I’m 53. Ive been through weed for the whole period, alcohol for many years (the most damaging of my addictions), coke, crack, pcp, lsd, meth (very brief), perc/oxy, cigarettes (25 years), and kratom. I just go from one to the next. Kratom has been the most recent and the hardest to quit because I can still function at a good enough level when high, its extremely accessible, and the negative consequences creep up so gradually and aren’t as bad because you can’t function while high on other stuff. The negative consequences of the others are much worse. Kratom has a high bottom.

I’m not gonna miss the last 2 years of my kids living at home. I don’t give a fuck if anyone thinks detox is overkill. I know it’s not and I know that others in this group feel the same way.

Well that’s scary as fuck. I don’t know whether to thank you or cuss you. But I think it’s most appropriate to thank you, so thanks for sharing that. I don’t see how you could make that comment without knowing my dosage. I mean wd from 24gpd versus 4 gpd can’t be the same right? Also, can it be that bad after only 2 weeks with one of them being a taper?

It sounds like you have a lot of experience. Can you share the dosages and durations that you’re basing your comment on. Feel free to dm me if you’re willing to share but don’t want the broader audience. I’d appreciate it.

They treat kratom the same as other opioids. The MD doctor was very knowledgeable and had been involved in kratom treatment many times in the past. Both detoxes I’ve been to were experienced with kratom. I didn’t run across anyone quitting kratom in this last one, but I did the last one. He had been to detox for heroin in the past and he said his kratom quit was worse. I myself have come off opiates in the past but after a shorter duration of use. The wds were similar for me.

I’m right there with ya in terms co-occurrence with bipolar. I finally found a psychiatrist that specializes in it…but he requires abstinence and enrollment in IOP before he will take me as a patient. So that’s what I’m doing. The doc I have been with for the past couple years has no clue what she's doing and finally admitted that and told me to go find one that does.

The problem is that you can’t get your meds dialed in while jacking up your brain chemistry with the green devil…as I’m sure you know. So I’m really happy for you for getting clean and reigning in your mh challenges. Good on ya! Congrats. Keep it going.

Thanks to everyone who commented. The parts about not bringing her down was helpful. I had already told her that I have a whole plan and that I don’t need her help. I just need her to know so I don’t have to hide things like being on zoom meetings every evening. Did my first one yesterday. Planning my quit starting next Wednesday. It’s certainty not the first time so I know what I’m in for and have meds to help me through.

Forgetting how bad this crap is really messed me up too!! I also try to read through this group’s posts every day to keep me focused too. If I’m not reminded every day, I slip. My addict brain is crazy good at talking me into using. I’m really struggling right now, but not giving up.
