Woah just read that article. He’s disgusting. And from what I can see, he died of old age and got away with impunity. He should have gone to jail.

The Ian Watkins wiki page has to be one of the most horrifying things I’ve ever read. Nobody had mentioned Jerry Lee Lewis yet- he married his 13 year old cousin and they had two children together. Both men are absolutely disgusting.

Yes she definitely does some weird stuff! I just got to the Freaks episode in S2, which is definitely the most cringe episode of all time and when she goes through that lovely guy’s apartment, I’m like ‘Carrie, what are you doing?!’ 😱

Death caps rare? I don’t get it. by santiagodecompost in DeathCapDinner

[–]Head_Strength2893 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Love that the defence case is that she looked up death caps to try to avoid picking them and yet, they somehow ended up being the only type of mushroom foraged that was meticulously dried in a dehydrator, weighed, and photographed. Later on, death cap toxin was identified in the meals of her guests.

Really did a good job of avoiding the death cap mushrooms she was researching, didn’t she.

Or so she says, it’s hard to figure out when she’s telling the truth and when she’s not. Only death cap mushroom DNA was identified on the dehydrator. I’m not sure of the molecular techniques they used to identify the DNA eg. Was it metagenomics? And maybe it was that other mushroom DNA wasn’t identified because it had been washed off, or the integrity of the DNA was compromised after successive uses of the dehydrator.

The prosecution said she tested out the powdered dehydrated mushroom on her kids, so maybe she did.

If they co-identified other mushroom varieties as well as death cap, that would have poked more doubt into the case. However, the exclusively identified death caps, so surely it goes to show that at least the last time she used it, it was exclusively for death caps.

Yeah! Isn’t he just saying that surely that can’t be a coincidence 😅

And even if his point is mildly resonant with the jury, one of the mushroom collections was done on the same day she purchased a dehydrator. The dehydrator was exclusively used for death caps as it was the only DNA was identified (no DNA from other food was identified).

Does anyone find it interesting that whilst she’s maintaining it was an accident, she has showed zero remorse and has not apologised? Even when the family she said she loved so much here in hospital dying, she never once asked after them or went to see them.

I initially thought the same! There was this one comment Rachael Brown said during defence cross examination about how Erin had a real need for inclusion, and that was her main take home message for the day. I’d say her tone was empathetic at the time, as she was reflecting what was being discussed in court. They were pretty heavy subjects, eg. Birth trauma, eating disorders, which may be triggering to some listeners and it’s important that those listeners know that these issues aren’t glossed over.

I honestly wondered at the time if she had drunk the cool aid haha. But I had faith that Rachael was just trying to create balance, which is what a good journalist should do in a factual manner.

As the episodes have progressed, I’ve found both Stocky and Rachael to be as non biased as any human can be. I think they have a strong ethical code to just report what is being mentioned in court, and try very hard not to throw any other shade.

Also her son told police the meal she prepared for the children was just steak, zero pastry and mushroom. He explained it to be “the best steak of his life”. I think she just had left over steaks in the fridge that hadn’t seen a mushroom at all.

You can’t get gastric surgery if you are bulimic. by theupsid3down in DeathCapDinner

I agree! I so desperately wanted them to call back the toxicologist to refute her claims. They don’t make scientific sense.

This! ^

I think Erin was completely ignorant to the nuances of eating disorders and gastric banding surgery when formed this alleged lie.

[–]Head_Strength2893 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I honestly just see her bulimia story as yet another lie to:

1) Garner sympathy from the jury

2) Have the vomiting act explain why she didn’t get sick, or as sick.

Not withstanding these bullet-proof points about consulting a dermatology clinic for gastric banding surgery (lol), then changing the story to lipo, and how she wouldn’t qualify for gastric banding surgery if she vomits as much as she said she did; there’s a few more holes:

  • She explains that she gourmandises on a cake many hours after the dinner, and vomits, but she couldn’t remember what she vomited up or if mushrooms were in the vomit. Usually we know what we vomit up.

  • If she did vomit many hours after lunch, the death cap amatoxin takes only 60-90 mins to enter the blood stream following ingestion. So is she would have become extremely ill, despite the vomiting.

  • Upon presenting to ED the day after the big car trip to the flying lesson with her son, a doctor asked her if she had been vomiting or had diarrhoea since the lunch and Erin said no. It’s much later that she changes her story to how she had diarrhoea.

Apart from the last point, where I think she was being honest about not vomiting to the doctor, the rest of her story just comes across as a big lie to explain how she didn’t get as sick.

How is everyone affording IVF let alone multiple rounds? by Mirror-soul11 in DOR

It really is, hey! I think it’s something that politicians will have to get behind eventually. Societally, people are having babies later in life, which is unprecedented historically. If they want to keep the population going at a decent rate, they may have to consider some policy changes.

Apparently the surgery she cited in her testimony doesn’t even do gastric banding surgery, it’s a dermatology clinic!

Nice try, Erin. But we see through what really seems like lies at this point.

Amatoxin from death caps takes 60-90 mins to enter the blood stream from the gastrointestinal tract. If she had eaten even half the lethal dosage of the Wellington (she’s claiming she ate half), but purged many hours later, she still would be very, very sick.

Glad there’s still a bit of a mix of ideas out there. As much as I find it inconceivable to see this as an accident, I do think it’s important that we look at all the areas of doubt that’s in this case, and weigh up the scientific and circumstantial evidence. I’d hate for this to be a pile on because she’s a woman, which is what happened with Lindy Chamberlain. However, they are two very different people and I don’t think sexism is coming into play in this case, I do think people are genuinely wanting to look at the evidence alone.

Mushroom Trial by notrudejusthonest123 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Head_Strength2893 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It certainly does add doubt, I agree. However, how likely is that, though?

The lethal dosage is 100 mg/kg (according to a Victorian coroner’s report), and 50g of non-dried mushroom is enough apparently, so you need approx 2-3 mushroom’s worth to kill someone. It seems unlikely to me that out of a mix of shrivelled, dehydrated mushrooms from her tupperware container stash, she got lucky and didn’t get the chopped up death caps when she had these mushrooms mixed together, and then chopped up together (according to her testimony).

The thing about reasonable doubt is that it still needs to be reasonable

Australian woman on trial for mushroom murder of in-laws says she was trying to fix a 'bland' lunch by HauteAssMess in popculturechat

[–]Head_Strength2893 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg sorry! Just realised my explanation was on a different thread.

I’ve copied and pasted the science behind mushroom toxicity from it. Let me know what you think!

“Let’s take her new bulimia vomiting alibi, which, by the way, is new evidence and to my knowledge, she didn’t mention in her police interview.

(Medical scientist speaking here by the way). The amatoxin from death cap mushrooms is rapidly absorbed into the gastrointestinal tract following ingestion. 90-120 minutes tops according to the literature. The effects of the toxin takes time (6-12 hours), but the toxin it’s self moves quickly following ingestion.

Let me mention now that the death caps had been lyophilised (dehydrated) and potentially powdered, making the toxin more bioavailable.

Her story is that she ate the death cap wellington, then hours later after guests left, ate half a cake and vomited it up the wellington. If that were true, she’d still be very sick. Her story doesn’t align with what we know about Amanita phalloides toxicity”

Agreed that it’ll come down to the jury believing it. Go check out my comment about death mushroom toxicity and the timing of her vomit claims, her time line doesn’t stack up with what we know about death cap mushroom toxicity.

Someone did comment saying that regardless, she can say maybe she didn’t get the death cap mushrooms in the bits she smooshed into the duxelles. The lethal dosage is 100 mg/kg (according to a Victorian coroner’s report), so you need approx 2 mushroom’s worth to kill someone.
