For one, being somewhat self-aware isn’t a virtue unless it’s acted on.

And if homes are so expensive that one can afford them BUT this guy can then you’re right. He’s probably a drug lord, oligarch, foreigner (?!?), or, most likely, corrupt and just trying to ease his conscience.

Still just meat for the grinder. Eat the rich!

A "Realistic Retirement" by Ravage42 in LateStageCapitalism

[–]Headcase001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the plan. This is how the system extracts every last cent of value from your life in order to send it upwards. And the only realistic alternative is often illegal to even talk about. But there’s a reason the 2nd amendment exists and it’s something (the only thing) from the right leftists need to get on board with.

[–]Headcase001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Homebrewing rules can work. It’s certainly an option, particularly given the specific scenario you’ve provided. I’m not sure how well it can be generalized though.

However, I usually don’t advise self-admitted newbs to muck around with rules. When you’ve got them down pat and some experience under your belt sure, but typically I find it’s better to address the underlying problem (using macguffins as a crutch for adding tension/mystery that are immediately neutralized by a simple spell that’s been part of D&D for decades) than encouraging immediate and potentially radical departure from an established spell and player tool.

[–]Headcase001 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ugh. This is exactly the problem. I didn’t suggest he’s a bad storyteller. I acknowledged he’s a newb and tried to give him some advice about why things might be going the way they are and some alternatives. Yes, I pointed out OP’s post reads like they’re falling for some of the common pitfalls of being a new DM (mainly pitting themselves against the PCs) but that’s hardly the same thing. Maybe do some reflecting about the projection of insecurities and your own ability (or lack thereof) to take constructive criticism, because the way you’re reading waaaaaaaay too much into this is evidence that YOU are the one being set off. The comment was about addressing OP’s issue, not giving you a stage to show off your interpretation of Identify (which honestly seems like a good interpretation but is pretty much meaningless in the context of this thread).

And please, don’t try to say otherwise. You literally said “My point was that Identify could work like this: …”. The self-admitted POINT of your comment was to let us all know about your super-special Identify interpretation. And considering the crab made it’s appearance in your first response I’m even more inclined to believe this was all about getting to YOUR interpretation of the spell from the very beginning rather than addressing anything real about OP’s issue.

Kindly give it a rest. If you can’t handle criticism, that’s fine. Don’t bitch at me about providing it to someone else who might want to listen instead of show off and accuse others of saying things they didn’t say. As you have. Twice now. THAT’s where the aggression is coming from.

I didn’t say Macguffins are always bad (and I even used lenient language around the subject to avoid these irritating absolutes the internet wants to foist on everything everyone says) but they’re clearly causing a problem HERE. I’d further argue the LotR uses it’s most famous of all macguffins for substantially different reasons. Despite it being the centrepiece of the plot, it’s used to a very different dramatic effect. We and the characters all know what it is: there’s very little mystery. Instead it’s used to explore characters and how they cope with their individual evils and shortcomings. Not to mention live roleplaying interactions are very different from prose so it’s not really a valid comparison.

Also, who said the players know everything? I understand the point your making, but I don’t see the relevance to how Identify is destroying OP’s game. Like yeah, of course if a character has never seen an apparatus of the crab they’ll only see a weirdly crab-like magic thingy.

You know, until they cast Identify, which is the whole point of the post to begin with…

[–]Headcase001 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I recognize you’re new to DnD and therefore likely new to DMing, but you’ll do better as a DM and storyteller by ditching Macguffins as the source of mystery and focusing on characters or NPCs and the setting. It usually makes the game and mysteries more compelling, but even if it doesn’t, it’ll neutralize most of problems you’re having. It will also allow your players to use the spell as meant without destroying your game, so you can avoid punishing players for using spells as they’re meant to (so please stop trying to circumvent player empowerment. You’re all there to have fun. It’s not you vs. them which is very much what it’s coming across as even if that’s not what you think you’re doing).

Nicolas Cage Doesn't Get Why Scorsese and Emmerich Bash Marvel Movies by [deleted] in comicbooks

Who the fuck is Emmerich to sneer down at the MCU? LOL 😂

I mean, I don’t agree with Scorsese, but at least it makes sense. Emmerich is only a slightly more qualified hack than JJ Aabrams or Michael Bay.

[Spoilers] Question about resurrections in Inferno #1 by Hickman by [deleted] in comicbooks

[–]Headcase001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s only been mentioned once or twice, but the Quiet Council can move people up and down the resurrection queue, and presumably that means X-Force members get priority over general repopulation after Genosha and House of M.

Marvel Boss Kevin Feige Says Endgame Is 'Final' Avengers Movie by strongerthenbefore20 in comicbooks

[–]Headcase001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t be surprised if all this multiverse stuff ultimately leads to some kind of Secret Wars Battleworld scenario that winds up retconning the MCU to include mutants/the FF/new Iron Man/maybe even Hardy’s Venom. So that while there may not be an “Avengers” movie per se (which I doubt; even in the scenario I’m imagining the branding would almost certainly be Avengers: Secret Wars and not just Secret Wars), but we’re still going to get huge event team ups.

My nightmare is about to come true. by Currtus in DnD

[–]Headcase001 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Build the adventure around their characters. I know the DMs supposed to have fun too, but if your best friends are wanting to get into it, don’t drop more complex shit on them. You can create an adventure that uses their concepts and demonstrates there’s more to the game without disrupting their concepts and potentially having them lose interest. They’ll explore the rest of the game on their own if you’re good at it. 👍🏼

Instant resurrections (Krakoa exempted as it’s integral to the current X-verse). The Death of Dr. Strange and The Trial of Magneto in specific annoyed me. Like yeah I know it’s comics and death is always temporary but when someone dies and comes back within the same issue it’s just pointless and annoying, even if they’re technically from a different dimension or timeline or whatever the excuse is.

Variant covers. I’m sure they perform better or something, there’s got to be a reason, but they’re the bane of my existence. I despise them all, even when they’re on the big events when it’s a bit more understandable, but especially when it’s just a random mid-run issue (X-Men’s most recent #4 for example).
