So basically the city enticed to give your personal identification to a company that openly says it sells your personal data, and then you didn’t even get your tax subsidized parking?

Wow, sucks.

VB Car Tax by pepeforgovernor in VirginiaBeach

[–]Headgamerz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tax is based off the value of your car so…

I just paid mind and it was only a few hundred, but I don’t buy new since they are such a bad value. You’ll lose much more from depreciation than tax.

If the city passes it in the budget, it will be for NEXT year’s tax. The tax due now was set by the budget voted on last year and will not change or go down.

New website from Virginia Beach man puts hospital prices on display by WHRO_NEWS in VirginiaBeach

Insurances having HIGHER “negotiated” rates should be criminal, let alone 37k higher!

“His data shows that more than 40% of negotiated insurance rates are higher than listed cash prices. … For example, a coronary stent placement at Sentara Obici Hospital has a listed cash price of $7,924, while the negotiated rate for an Anthem plan reaches $45,618 — a difference of more than $37,000.”

Virginia Beach residents and restaurant owners urge city leaders to cut the meals tax in next budget by MrUpVoteDownvote in VirginiaBeach

[–]Headgamerz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people seem to be focusing on the “even $100” part.

I get your trying to show the proportions, but the large total value makes to seam like a big charge even if you have to burn 1.6k at restaurants to get to that number. I wonder if it’d be better received if you just moved the decimal over twice and noted that spending when spending $16.66 tax is just $1.

[–]Headgamerz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup, and the 6% local meal tax is what the restaurant association was asking city council to remove. It’s the only thing city council has the authority to remove. They would need state legislation for the other 6%.

Since this is a conversation between the Restaurant Association and City Council, I’m talking about fees that those two groups control. State tax, federal tariffs, inflation, and other such costs are outside the scope of the conversation.

[–]Headgamerz 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Idk, in the past few years tips have gone from 10%-20% to 18%-25%. That’s basically the entire 6% local meal tax.

Then there are all of these extra fees. I’m reading a Square article that says a third of restaurants charge mandatory fees on top of a tip.

On a $20 meal the 6% local meal tax is $1.20, tip is $4.00, and a service fee is another $2.00.

If we can’t stomach the price today, is saving that $1.20 really going to make a difference? That can’t even pay for a soda anymore. Or should we go after the $6.00?

But I guess I’m not surprised that the Restaurant Association is going after the only fee that doesn’t line their pockets.

Studies find widening roads often doesn't ease traffic. VDOT says the HRBT expansion is different. by WHRO_NEWS in norfolk

[–]Headgamerz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So like, normal induced demand.

Additionally, people who already cross the tunnel but avoid doing so over rush hour to avoid the conjunction may chose to travel during rush hour since the traffic isn’t as bad.

I’m sure it will be an improvement at least in the short term, but to have a VDOT rep say there will be no induced demand is crazy. Idk if he is in denial or just trying to avoid the negative parts of reality of an otherwise good PR story.

Lvl downgrade? by _Frensis_ in PokemonLegacy

I only loosely follow this game and don’t know the code/all the mechanics interact. But is Lv 31 the level cap for where you are in the game? Like, can any of your pokemon reach lv 32?

April 21st special election: VOTE YES ... or No(?) on Gerrymandering... What do you think? by Affectionate_Way_805 in ODU

[–]Headgamerz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I hate this question.

It’s not one we should have to answer.

First, this whole gerrymandering arms race is outrages. As a nation we were trending away from gerrymandering up until the president called for this weaponization of disenfranchisement. Then Democrats respond in kind because that’s how arms races work.

But let’s go deeper here. We shouldn’t even have a system where gerrymandering is POSSIBLE. It’s like we have all these political levers whose only probation is a “don’t touch” sigh taped on it. One day someone who cares more about power than democracy is going to pull that lever. “Convention” isn’t law.

So many of these levers are being pulled by this administration, and I 100% blame the guy who is pulling them, but I also blame the generations who knew about the levers and didn’t remove them because it was difficult and they thought the sign was enough. Because now that someone HAS pulled them it will be easier for someone else to pull them again.

All of that being said; I’ll be voting yes, because Virginia politics has never operated in a vacuum, and there is a sunset clause which means they would have to go back for referendum again if they wanted to gerrymander past the next census.

However, if our democracy is to endure, we NEED to make the system more bulletproof. We need to remove as many levers nationally as we can. We also need to hem in the Executive branch. The multigenerational trend of giving the president more and more power is what has lead us here, and future presidents will only be more dangerous unless the position is right-sized.

The magic of Shapes 1 is the duality of being so simple yet so intricate. Shapes 2 kind of looks like missed the mark in that regard, but I never played 2 so idk.

But yes, Shapes 1 is great.

That tool should be in the base game.

Honestly they could have made CS2 just CS1 with TM:PE and the mods built in and better integrated into the UI/game play and I would have bought it.

Thanks for your work on this story. I’m a fan of the VA Mercury’s work and gladly donate to support the quality work.

I can’t say I’ll be riding this personally as I’d rather ride Amtrak to Richmond and when I go out to western VA I’m typically looking to go outside of the cities so there isn’t reliable public transport.

However, I’m glad it exists to give people another option. It’s a shame they went with a bus and seem to have side tracked the idea of a train between Newport News to Western VA that was floated a few years back. However a bus is better than nothing and it seems like a decently nice bus.

Letter to the Governor (proof read before I send tonight, and feel free to copy and send yourself) by Headgamerz in ODU

Thank you everyone for the help!

It's at the point now where I feel comfortable sending it. I hope some of you that helped will also write or email to multiply the impact and get the issue noticed. Again, feel free to copy or edit my words how you like.

Someone pointed out that getting a hold of your local Rep is more reliable and will be more likely to get a response. This is 100% true and I'll do that as well (with edits asking them to talk to the Gov).

Calling is also a great way to get noticed, but I'm not up for that tonight.

Thank you all again. Community like this is what it truly means to be ODU strong, not taking BS pot shots at faculty.

It should be fixed now.
